Title: Expensive year
Post by: Newportnobby on April 14, 2026, 09:39:41 AM
2026 has been and will continue to be an expensive year for yours truly.
Already arrived has been the Farish C class in SECR livery.
Next up will be the 4 car and 3 car 1938 Underground stock
Quarters 2 and 3 should see the arrival of:-
Dapol's BoB light pacific
Dapol's Mogul
Dapol's J72 in lined apple green station pilot livery
Dapol's LMS suburban coaches (3 of)
Dapol's Gresley Buffet in blue/grey
Dapol's Full  brake in maroon
EFE Baby Deltic

In fact, that clears all my pre-orders apart from the NGS 6.5T crane which we're not allowed to ask about.

I could be begging for Red Cross parcels come the end of the year!

Similar here Mick, something like £650 of spend this year. Trouble is Mrs N hasn't a clue.

May have to bribe the postman to only deliver when she is out or leave the packages in a secret place.

Only problem is Mrs N has started looking at the credit card statement and questions like what's this Rails of Sheffield at £xxx.

Mind you she still owes me a birthday present which she said could be my present-orders trouble is they have grown somewhat since then.

Not so bad here.

I've already bought a second Britannia on impulse a few weeks ago then, the same week, I received one of the new batch of Castles which I'd had on pre-order for a while.

The only other items I'm waiting for at the moment are:

Ex GW Mogul
Modified Hall
New run Manor.

No doubt other things will tempt me at some point.
I was almost tempted today by ROS Black 5 for £99-50 but decided against it on the grounds that they were somewhat rare on the sea wall.

I am another who has already spent a tidy sum on a Rapido Peak, three sound fitted Farish V2s and a fourth non-sound one which has since had sound fitted (YouChoos). I have a sound fitted Hall due according to Bachmann June/July plus possibly 2 x Sonic A5s and a J72 before the year end.

I am yet to order (but doubtless will) a sound fitted Class 20 and possibly an EFE Baby Deltic.

So predicted spend this year on locos alone likely to be circa £2k possibly a tad more  :hmmm:

That said, it isn't every year a brand new and brilliant model of my fave loco (V2) with sound gets released..

I was speaking to @Hailstone and he told me he has 3 x Moguls on pre order + other stuff so Lord only knows what @Bob G has on order. He'll probably be having ½ a dozen light pacifics at the least!!

Of course, I'd forgotten about the BoBs.
They were regular performers on the sea wall with route familiarisation turns.
I have two of the old GF pacifics but they do look rather outdated so yes, I guess I'll need to order one of the new Dapol ones.

I have a grand total of three Mk3 sleepers on pre-order.

I'm tempted by plenty of other models, but since the delivery of the class 45, FSA/FTA and Cartics I don't think my pre-order list has been this low.

Maybe 2026 is the year of transition and older models :)

Spare a thought for those for whom buying these expensive new toys can only be dreamed of.

I've managed not to buy very many new toys this year (so far!). I have mostly been spending money on track, which has seen me purchase 2 sets of scissor crossings and 28 turnouts. Another 8 turnouts to purchase and I will have enough to finish building the fiddle yard. Once these are all purchased it will be time to buy the point motors and then it will be on to the boards to control these and monitor the fiddle yard ready for automation.

My job this week is to build the 3 main boards for the fiddle yard and start to lay track. I have managed to cut almost all the ply for this today, so there is hope.

So far it's been a fairly cheap year including landing some half price (ie sensibly priced) virgin mark 2 stock at last.

Baby Deltic is tempting but I have a rather nice kit built one, and the other stuff I'd want is all stuff I already have in some older form that will do just fine.

The tube stock looks great but I have absolutely no reason for that although I do have the matching 05 shunter.

I admit to buying the tube stock purely for the memories.
It will, however, hopefully create a stir if I run it on our club layout at any shows we get invited to :)

There's less and less which tempts me these days, so my wallet remains largely unscathed! A couple of 66s and the FSA/FTAs this year, and I must put deposits down for some Electrostars, but I don't think there's much else out there!

It's a quiet year in N gauge land.
3 x Peaks and 2 x class 33s have already arrived.
Future spend will cover a Mogul, a Manor, 4 WC/BB (down from 5 as I'm being frugal) and 2 Ivatt 2MT. Oh and two Revolution 313 PEP units, a Gresley Buffet and a Gresley Full Brake. Maybe some YEOMAN bogie tipplers if they are ready.

And I'm not allowed to mention the expense of building the OO layout. Shhh. I might have got away with it!  :D

But as it's a new tax year, and I've closed my business, I have about £3k's worth of acquisitions to photograph, and sell, to offset the buying habit.

Top of the list of sales will be a BNIB Dapol Evening Star Pines Express set,
a 1970's era Tamper Brass kit with Kato chassis, hand made, painted and weathered by Dave Jones,
a BNIB green/SYP class 20 D8158 and a BNIB blue/FYP disc class 20 20048.
Offers on these are more than welcome to start the year off.

No need to wait for tax years and what not, you can dispose of personal possessions with impunity, no tax owed.

Of course you and I know that, but EBay loves to send details to the taxman if you sell more than £1000 a year, whether it's a business or not. More importantly, from January to March, people are generally recovering from Christmas, and because my stuff is looked after well (aka stored well) I'd like to get the most I can - not that I'm ever going to be in profit (there's another thread on that, I believe).

They can send everything they want, you still don't owe tax!

There are certain elements of the regulatory world who love to get one over on you, rightly or wrongly.

So when you've been nicked for spending more than 30 seconds in the middle lane of the M69 by a vigilante with a dashcam who particularly didn't like BMW drivers, and who subsequently had to break the law by speeding to overtake me, but didn't get done because he reported me, you realise the world is not a fair place, and that everyone is out to get you  :laugh3:

I track all my retail purchases and EBay (or other) sales for that very reason.
Title: Re: Expensive year
Post by: njee20 on April 18, 2026, 09:42:43 PM
EBay has pretty decent reporting tools, no need to track anything separately. Obviously your prerogative to do whatever you deem necessary - but there are a lot of misconceptions on this one and I think it's important to correct, there is no tax liability if you're just disposing of personal possessions. Nuance around high value possessions (not toy trains) and CGT notwithstanding!

Anyway, the buying bit is more fun!

Modified hall?..... maybe. Got 3 dapol ones--will i even notice the difference ?

Spam can ? highly unlikely--even if it does show up this year.

Sonic prairie.  I ought to really--after all i did hack 2 farish ones to make 42xx and 72xx.( well--kinda )

With several items on the pre-order list the last thing I needed was to spend too much at the Newton Abbot toy and train fayre this morning.

Hmmmmmm........was this too much I wonder ?

I've bought 1 book on a railway that I'm modelling, about a dozen wagons so far.
Most further spending in 2mm will be on plasticard , I have a lot of buildings to build of real prototypes.. spend so far £100 ISH, expected another £100 on that. Then when I decide how to do it that layout needs another £200, on building the off scene boards with track.

Then there an order sitting on this tablet, that will be ordered next week, to build something in 1.5mm. £280

Then some non expense, literally today  I've just inherited around another £100  of 4mm scale lorries.

So far this year has seen another Peak, 64xx, 57xx, Britannia added to the fleet. Three of the new Halls, a BoB and a Mogul are also on the pre order list, so yes it will be a rather expensive year.
