Title: Get well soon, George
Post by: Newportnobby on March 06, 2026, 10:13:17 AM
George (Bealman) is currently in hospital with a fractured vertebra he blames on picking up a rack of VB. Said hospital wanted to send him home yesterday with some painkillers but it's obviously far worse than they think as the poor chap is almost passing out with the pain.
He's now in a 'proper' ward so, hopefully, will be having an X ray and a consultation with someone who knows what they're talking about*
I thought our NHS was bad at times but the same seems to apply down under ::)

*Just my hope, rather than me knowing what's going on

Yeah, well I'm in a public hospital so hopefully won't have to pay for it, cos it looks like I'll be here a while. :*(

Dangerous stuff that VB.

Hope you soon start to improve.

I presume "VB" is Victoria Bitter, not Visual Basic or Victoria Beckham?  :) :)  (you can tell I googled it!)

In hospital your next VB will probably be virtuous broccoli. That will make you strong enough to carry a slab of VB again, George!

Get well soon.

Sorry to hear you are in hospital, George.

I hope the clever doctors get you fixed up and you are back at the Beal & Castle Eden and Bowlo in no time at all.

With the very best of good wishes.

Ouch - hope they can sort you out without any permanent consequences.

When I fell off a horse in Australia the doc (who apart from the lack of corks round the hat could have fallen out of a movie) told me that he could either give me painkillers or I could drink beer but not both and that beer was a great muscle relaxant 8)

Sorry to hear about your woes. I much prefer the funny stories.

Not kidding, but you will only be in a public hospital as long as absolutely necessary.
If you have (and you should at our age) private hospital cover, you may move here for your extended recovery.

@Bealman
George - have you been seen by someone who knows what the problem is and, if so, what diagnosis/treatment have they given? It seems to be dragging on, although in the UK you'd probably still be on a gurney in a corridor.

Anne is now at home and being looked after by a rellie. Rumour has it George will be released next Tuesday but, basically, he'll have to be on the strongest painkillers below morphine level as they've done nothing to his back :worried:

Oh, dear. The tale of woe just goes on................
George has now got an infection in his ankle so has to go back to the hospital from the rehabilitation centre to have the infection flushed out. The hope is it has not attached itself to the metal pin in his ankle. :worried:
It does delay the fight at Chez Bealman as to who gets the one pair of crutches Anne and George have between them. I know who my money is on...........

In the UK, you get tested for MRSA before you can be admitted to hospital, and then they make sure you actually do have it when you get kicked out ::)

Bealman update.

Well, I got transferred to Wollongong Hilton Private Hospital at 7am yesterday morning and had a good (ish) day. Highlight of which being a visit from Mrs B and her brother (who brought a couple of VBs with him - what a champion).

I am being treated with multiple lashings of antibiotics delivered by IV drip.

Mrs B has twenty three stitches in her knee but reckons she is getting around alright. She is using my old crutches but didn't need them for the visit.

This post has taken me a while to do as I keep getting interrupted by nurses sticking me and putting new canulas in, along with huge helpings of pills.

Oh, almost forgot, the back, which is the primary reason I was taken off the streets three weeks ago is still there, albeit not the centre of attention anymore.

Otherwise, everything is fine, just fine. :D

Oh, here's the view from Chez Hospital(Pacific Ocean in left distance):

Apart from the complete lack of dignity in hospitals, the next biggest lack is sleep. There's something about patients sleeping that nurses find worrying so, just when you've dropped off, they wake you up with "It's time to take your pills" or "we have to take your blood pressure" >:D .
Oh no, you're not allowed any much needed sleep

That's exactly right, Mick. Happens all the time. You just get comfy and drop off, then a voice at the door (which I always leave open, goes:"Knock knock! Sorry!"

So you drag yourself upright and mutter, "That's ok" when in fact it's anything but.

Nice view. The old penal colony is starting to look quite civilised, isn't it??

News from Papyrus Calamity Corner, Mrs P has had her broken arm fixed (see Unhappy thread, 19th March) by a very nice young German sawbones. She now has a piece of Meccano in her arm (she was told she had the very expensive, Rolls-Royce version!). The operation took 2 hours, mainly because the bones weren't quite aligned and they had to juggle them a bit, but she got to watch the operation on a monitor! Wouldn't be my idea of relaxing telly, but each to their own.

Good to hear that Mrs B is up and about again. Hope you will be out of there soon and back to keeping the bus stop tidy.

All the best,

Chris

Well, I got transferred to Wollongong Hilton Private Hospital at 7am yesterday morning and had a good (ish) day. Highlight of which being a visit from Mrs B and her brother (who brought a couple of VBs with him - what a champion).

Er, wasn't it that that put you in hospital in the first place?

A better view of the ocean.

Here's a slightly better view of the ocean from Chez Bealhosp. Actually, this part of the Pacific Ocean is technically called The Tasman Sea (separates us from the Kiwis) ;)

That big rock is one of five islands - the road along there out to Port Kembla steelworks is called Five Islands Road.

As we slide into autumn here, the Old Pacific Sea (as Barry Mackenzie called it) looks magnificent from Bealman's hospital window this morning. Yes, I'm out of bed in-between visits from the dripalator:

A demotion.

Moved from 6th floor to 3rd floor today. The go-home soon ward? I wish! With Easter looming, they emptied that ward out so they could employ less nurses.

Same here. April and May are my favourite months. Although hot and cold here, between the Forth and the Tweed, are rather different concepts from NSW. And, rather than having the blue Pacific to look at, I, with a bit of effort, can see the Firth of Forth and the North Sea which are grey. Fifty shades of grey.

Take care of yourself.

All the very best.

George sent me a pic of him and Anne being mobile, although George is walking with the aid of a stick. Unfortunately, it seems they think he now has pneumonia
I must admit when my Mother fell, broke her hip and was taken into hospital first she got a UTI then pneumonia. Hospitals, eh? They just keep on giving. :unimpressed:

Following a cardiac scan, the pneumonia is off the table but the diagnosis is severe heart failure. One side of George's heart is not moving, hence the shortness of breath.
The poor lad is being transferred to a cardiac ward. He's really going through the wars :(

Bloody hell, a very fragile Bealman scrambled through a mist of pain and got himself ready for extraction.

Anyway, he is now back home for better or for worse (PICC line hanging out of arm, etc), but at least after six or so weeks is reunited with....

Actually, saying I'm on the loose again is a bit of an exaggeration. My PICC line is connected to a bottle hanging in a pouch around my neck and the whole set up is extremely confining and awkward.

So I'm housebound... no bus stop trips in the immediate future!  :(

Been a few days now, George @Bealman
How are you getting on with the snazzy bum bag and the drip in your arm at home?
They won't have prescribed you any morphine to take at home so, on a scale of 1 - 10 (with 1 being virtually pain free), how're you doing?
Title: Re: Get well soon, George

10 - no, 5.

I'm managing. It's all the appointments and all the pills which are the bugbear.

I'm well enough to drive short distances, though.

Thanks for asking - I'm still here! I have to acknowledge the help I get from my daughters and Mrs B (even though she is not the best herself with her knee operation), and of course the two nurses who see to me each day.
