A UK platform is supposed to be 3' above the height of the rail top (actually the standard is in mm but the number happens to be 3'). Many older stations are lower. Continental platforms are lower and further away from the track.

So measure the thickness of the track and add something between 5 and 6mm allowing for thickness of top surfaces etc. Best to be a bit under rather than a bit over as that is easier to fix if its off.

By eye it should be so that looking flat over it at a coach the top fo the solebar (black bit below the body) is just visible.

I use ply, either 9 or 10mm and this seems to work out ok with Peco code 55 track, code 80 track is a bit thicker.

Code 55 track thickness  3.25mm + standard platform height of 6.2mm = 9.45mm, so 9mm ply plus card or plasticard for the actual platform works fine for me.

measurement is 6mm from top of rail to top of platform.
