It is with a heavy heart I have to advise the membership of the passing away of member 'dannyboy' (David Kay). He died suddenly but peacefully on 29th January 2025. I'm sure our hearts go out to his family and friends, especially his dear wife, Louisa. I was lucky enough to meet David at a meet up in the NRM at York several years ago and, just as we found here, he had a ready wit and great sense of humour. I will miss him.
R.I.P. David :(

Oh no.
That's not what we wanted to hear.
I missed him at York, but he was a regular in the early days of our Zoom meetings during Covid. He was always great fun on the Zoom's, always in his dressing gown, he had a great sense of humour, which, thankfully was better than his "groaners" page.
His enthusiasm for model railways was exceptional. I'd go as far to say "infectious", he alone was responsible for my getting caught up & buying rather a lot of BN rolling stock. I loved his 'pigeon eye' view video he did of his layout.
He was also another keen cat lover. What is it with N Gauge & felines? He & Louisa regular adopted & rehomed stray cats.
He's going to be a big loss to our community.
Condolences to Louisa & the rest of his family.
He'll be greatly missed.
R.I.P. Danny Boy, try not to cheese off the 'big guy' with that bumper book of yours.
Miss ya.
M.
Sad news indeed and he has already been missed for the past few weeks and will continue to be so. RIP fella.
Thanks for letting us know.
Our condolences prayers thoughts to Louisa.
Just to add that earlier this evening I posted a message of condolence on the page which Mick links to on behalf of all the forum. It's not showing up yet as it said it may take a few hours to be approved but needless to say I passed on all of our condolences to Louisa at this sad time.
That is terribly sad. Condolences to Louisa and to those who knew him personally.
Nick
Very sad news. Although we never met, I feel I know him through his contributions to the NGF - yes, even his groaners!
I bought a locomotive from him some years ago, and it arrived here in Australia meticulously wrapped.
My condolences to his wife and family.
I will also miss him.
RIP David.
That's really sad news. He was a very nice chap and apart from the groaners thread being a daily laugh I was always impressed with his card model building work.
Just want to echo the sentiments, I really have missed his "groaners" over the last few weeks, and only yesterday wondered what was happening.
As George said, similarly I never go to meet him, but always felt he was someone I would like to meet and get to know.
This is really, really sad news.
David was one of the forum regulars for many years and I always looked forward to what he had to say.
I never met him in the flesh but he, along with myself and Mike (NBodger), was involved in the creation of the two NGF Virtual Exhibitions so I was in regular virtual contact with him.
We would set up frequent Zoom planning meetings but David was notorious for always joining 6 or 7 minutes late.
He will be missed.
My condolences to Louisa and the rest of his family.
:( :( :(
Oh no, what sad news. 73 is no age these days. Like many others I never met him except in these pages but I always thought we would get on well.
Thanks for letting us know, Mick. We will all miss him.
Chris
A sad time indeed
Over the few years I have been on the forum, I got to know David reasonably well.
Unfortunately never met him but have had conversations with him on zoom both during the creation of NGF Virtual Exhibition and the forums weekly zoom meetings. Yes, as Martin said he was always late to the meetings and on the forums weekly meetings Louisa always had the television on what seemed maximum volume, so we could all hear.
A fellow Yorkshireman who hailed from Bradford, only a few miles from my home town. We both shared many memories of the area, the various jobs he had and the locations.
One thing you can not forget is his sense of humour, often seen in many of his forum posts, not just his infamous groaners.
Condolences to Louisa and his family
RIP Big Fella
What very sad news, I too will miss the 'Groaners' thread.
Ed
Sad news indeed.
Like most forum regulars, I never met him but felt I knew him. His truly awful jokes will be greatly missed. Also he was an occasional customer of ours at Pennine Wagons - odd to think we won't be posting wagons off to Leitrim any more.
RIP David. Condolences to his family & friends.

Not a lot more I can add to what has been said already.
My main interaction with David was probably through the 'Groaners' thread - especially when he left himself open for some friendly riposte (he could take as well as he gave, and I suspect expected it :) )
Despite some attempts by others to maintain the standard he set, it won't be the same without his daily dose :(
Just adding my sincere condolences here to David's family and to his friends. He was generous with advice and his wit will remain legendary. A kind soul who will be missed in these pages for certain.
Very sad news, my condolences to David's family and friends.
Terribly sad news.
Although we never met, through many an entertaining chat online I quickly recognised David to be a very fine fellow.
Rest in peace David. My condolences and thoughts to Louisa, family, and friends.

Oh my. What can I say that has not been said already. The Zoom calls are not the same without him (and Louisa's TV in the background).
Miss your wit and wisdom.

Sad news for all of us, David.
Your gracious and unpretentious posts were a pleasure to read and will be missed by all I'm sure. Not to mention your groaners which were often so awful they were funny. Thank you!
Rest in Peace,
Webbo
I've had an enforced absence from our Forum for the past few days. When I was able to look at it again this morning I saw this truly awful news.
My condolences to Louisa.
David was a continuing source of enthusiastic encouragement to me and little parcels would occasionally arrive, containing something for Poppingham which he thought I might enjoy.
One of the marvellous things about our Forum is that one can become good friends with someone that you haven't actually met. At least, met in person. But with David, there was most certainly a meeting of minds.
Goodbye, Friend and Modeller. You will be much missed but never forgotten.
John
Wonderful words, and so true.
I have only just discovered the news, David will be missed by us all. my condolences to Louisa and the family. another of the good guys gone :(
Regards,
Alex
it was always a good day when a PM arrived from him, usually with the subject 'not for the forum' :-[
a true gentleman, almost always first post to read had to be the daily groaner, no matter what was going on, the day grew brighter and better.
he will be sorely missed.
if NGF ever create a hall of fame, he should have pride of place.
I echo everyone's sentiments. He will be very much missed.
R I P Dannyboy
Condolences to his family and friends, he always sounded such a wonderful chap.
