Title: Enamel/whitespirit washes/panel liners with out varnish question.
Post by: Grassyfield on March 02, 2025, 12:51:56 PM
Do enamel washes or white spirit oil washes effect the paint of newly bought wagons/locos that have not been varnished/clear coated. I think some people use panel liners and enamels with out varnishing loco/wagon first but i dont know for sure and if they do is it because theres no issue?.

Thank you very much everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've used enamel washes on new locos and coaches without any issues, and without varnishing first. I can't see why white spirit would cause issues unless really overused....

The paint finish should be fine, but be careful round numbers, logos etc (especially recent Farish stuff as the ink Bachmann use is easily removed) as the thinners can remove tampo printed elements, especially if under prolonged exposure like during weathering. I've taken branding off a few Farish locos by accident like that
