Title: My new house, by a real railway, and with room inside for a real layout !
Post by: Phoenix on February 22, 2025, 08:34:35 PM
Hi All,

As some of you may know I'm moving from Weymouth to Swanage, a bit further down the coast, with a nice beach / harbour, some lovely pubs, and a good theatre, like Weymouth has, but also a real Steam Railway, and room inside for me to build a layout like all you guys have .... which I don't have in Weymouth. ;)

The house that I was aiming for fell through, so I have been looking at other properties, and all is sorted with an end of terrace new (4yrs old) build.

It is fabulously insulated so should be cheap to run, in the kitchen all the appliances are fitted in, and there is a wood burner in the lounge and patio doors to a small back garden.

The house is further out of town than the one I had previously sorted, which knowing sea-side towns is quite a good thing. I am only about 10 mins walk from the town centre, which is ok, and the house is far nicer  :D  :D  :D

Anyway, that's not what you want to know about. You want to know where I can put a layout  ;D

There are two bedrooms upstairs, like I have here. One just a bedroom for me, and another as spare room / work room. Then above that is a room in what would be the loft which will be solely for a layout.

This is the size ....

And here's how it looks .....

My first thoughts are to have a dog-bone layout like this ....

I might also get an outer loop running continuously round the walls, and on a shelf at the stairs end.  :hmmm:

Also perhaps a fiddle yard here, where the cardboard box is.  :hmmm:

Anyhow, that's what is planned, so will let you know when I know what's going on  :D

All best wishes

Kevin

Looks such a pleasant property  kevin with just a perfect Railway room. Hope you can stagger home from pub, park if need,  get to the shops and still have space for all those layouts !

Hold your horses Martin  :D  :P  :D

I've got to get me there first !

There will be one though, and I'll try and fix it for when there's an open day at the railway  :laugh3:  :claphappy:  :laugh3:

Hi Kevin,

That all looks great  . Looking forward to your build and the house warming, seems like plenty of room to crash  :D

Cheers, weave  :beers:

Great stuff. You're all set now!

That plan looks like it's a Model Railroader one, and, like most North American layouts, is single track. Now you have the dream space, it's got to be double track! :beers:

Looks great, Kevin.
You do have a crash helmet for wearing in the railway room, don't you? :worried:  ;)

Very exciting time starting a new layout, Kevin.

Deadwood is a limp dog-bone layout like you are planning. This basic configuration worked very well for me.

Happy planning and building, Webbo

All sounds good but is there a Dog House (https://doghouseweymouth.com/) nearby, ideally with an updated website. Just for the Fakebook followers and before 'someone' else posts it they do update this page (https://www.facebook.com/TheDoghouseWeymouth/) at least  :beers:

Hi All,

Well, I've been a bit preoccupied with getting everything sorted out with banks and solicitors to get the contracts exchanged for completion before stamp duty goes up.

All is sorted now. Everything was completed yesterday, so now I've got a new house with an upstairs room for a "big boys" railway, and walking distance from the steam railway  :D  :claphappy:  :D

No date for the move yet, as I need to get tenants in here at Weymouth (the letting agent is coming round Monday) but all is now completed

The main aim was getting the finances in place before the rise in stamp duty, and plans for Swanage will start towards the end of May with exploring the pubs, looking for Martin's "plank on the pier", and is it too early to plan a layout  :hmmm:  :D  :hmmm:

All best wishes

Kevin

It's never too early to plan a layout as, to my mind, it's the most important piece of any set up. If you don't get it right you'll come to hate it further down the line (sorry :-[ )

I agree with Mick as you need a good platform to begin with which is a good starting point and see how it's going to turnout (I'm not sorry  :P )

Hi All,

That seems absolutely spot on, and I know there is plenty of help on this forum to guide me along the way  :D  (or tell me where to go  ;D )

I have been looking for a general idea at Longcroft (thanks John  ) as the rooms seem the same shape but there is more space in John's.

I like the idea of a double "Test track" on a higher level round the edge and the rest separate inside.

As the room has proper access I will have baseboards made to give me a good foundation, and while I wait for those I can settle in, find the pubs, and finish my little harbour layout, although maybe not in that order  ;)

All best wishes

Kevin

My double test/running in track is very useful mate. The 2 tracks are not connected to each other, have just 2 sets of points on each and the tracks are code 80. The rest of the layout is code 55 of course. I sometimes leave new stock running on those 2 tracks and go and have my dinner, maybe a beer instead etc and I can watch anything running in on the CCTV which I have up there. You don't need that last part of course. It was one of my better ideas to do this
