Title: A quick lap of Mt Panorama at Bathurst
Post by: Platy767 on October 17, 2024, 12:37:19 PM
Hello all the rev heads on the forum.

Last week the Bathurst 1000 was on from Mount Panorama. The car types have changed from the glory days of Ford and Holden V8s belting it out all day. Now we have Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang, and it isn't the same.

This video is not from last weekend, but the Bathurst 12 hour, earlier in the year.
I've only been around the circuit on the rear of a marshall's bike when I used to help on the speed trap during the Easter bike races many years ago. It's a confidence challenging circuit to go quick on. The circuit has been slowed at the end of Conrod Straight with the addition of The Chase, some years ago, but it is still quick. Nowhere near as long as the Nurburgring, so only a 2 minute lap. I thought it was worth watching.

BTW: Mount Panorama is a road circuit near the NSW country city of Bathurst. I think it is still a public road and you can still drive around the circuit when it is not used for racing.

PS: Here's Greg Murphy's legendary lap of the gods over 20 years ago. This was during the top 10 shootout to see who takes pole for the start of the race.

I'd love to do a lap of Bathurst, it looks like an incredible track. I've "raced" it in IIRC Project Cars (or some other racing sim), but that's no comparison to the real deal.

My favourite lap has to be this one:

That V12 noise...  :drool:

@AdeV
Yes, that's the track I knew with an unrestricted Conrod Straight.

Tom's 1985 lap was 2:18 and he was puffing at the end. He would be getting lapped every dozen or so laps during the 161 lap race these days.

You had better start saving now if you want to do some hot laps! Why not plan a trip downunder?
