That looks like a nice layout on which to run stock and a nice selection of locos and wagons.
Which club is it?
Cheers
Martin
It's Leyland Model Railway Club's layout 'Heatherley', Martin
Lovely scenery. Looks like a lovely layout to operate and thanks for the videos
Yeah, please tell them that's a nice looking layout. Thumbs up from the antipodes!
wow nice layout!
A somewhat shaky vid of my Schools on the club layout. Dunno why but although I know I have shaky hands I find it awkward to use my phone for these.....

Sounds like the old 'split gears' problem, it's very common in models of a certain vintage.
PW
Dependent on how much stock I take to the club I use the foam inserts from JB Modelworld in either their blue plastic boxes or in my aluminium 'flight case' and have noticed when unpacking the stock there are often loose couplings discovered in the trays. It seems the foam particularly likes snagging a coupling or two. I always lie stock on their sides in the trays, my thinking being with the coupling being central it shouldn't get snagged.
Does anyone else suffer this 'coupling munching syndrome' and, if so, how do you cure it please?
Maybe the use of some sort of liner??
Acid free tissue paper, available from Hobby Craft and art shops is great for stopping couplings, brake levers and other bits snagging on foam.

Thanks, Steven. I pride myself on taking good care of my stock so will be searching some out. I can spend a couple of hours the day after a clubnight just putting stock back in it's original boxes c/w correct running numbers.

I used to do that but eventually decided to split stock into fixed trains, each of which lives in its own storage box (JB's Model World, Kato, DIY).

Took some more stock to the club last night.

The BP was bought new on release all those years ago for the sum of 204 of our English pounds. It still astounds me how well matched both power cars are.
Yep, I got mine at the same time for probably more (it was a Chrissy present, so I'm not sure of the cost).
You're right, the power cars are very well matched. Except of course when crossing from one layout section onto another controller which happens to be set in the wrong direction :-[ :-[

Would it need a barrier wagon? A steam loco might because of the sparks, but class B indicates the flash point of the contents is over 23degC, so not that flammable.

Definitely something to keep posting!!
Not the best of nights last night. Straight from his stock box friend Rob's class 40 evidenced a split gear, and his old Poole Farish Duchess seemed to enjoy throwing herself off the track at regular intervals. In the meantime my BachFar Jubilee had issues with the front bogie at various crossovers on the layout and, because I was mixing Peco and Dapol wagons, they turned into Troublesome Trucks and randomly parted company with each other safe in the knowledge I had no Tacky Wax or Black Tack with me.
I have to say the board joints on the club layout are not set up properly and the track needs a damned good clean
Meeting next week about our upcoming exhibition and the following week I reckon I'll have a MU evening with 101s, 108s, Blue Pullman, class 800 etc

Huge frontal differences. MR (left) has central headcode and no corridor connection - WR (right) has split headcode and corridor connection
Didn't you get one (or more)?
The pic was a lift from the Revolution website very early on in the scheme of things and hence the grey cab roof on the WR one

It's been some time since I posted in this thread, but 'Heatherley' suffered some malfunctions on the Sunday of the Leyland MRC show in August and has been 'in dock' for repairs to 3 points and a couple of point motors in the fiddle yards.
Last night I took my Dapol HST set c/w newly installed Hunt magnetic couplings to the clubrooms. It runs just fine on my Unitrack test oval but I needed to see how it performed over code 80 Peco medium points, that being the acid test for it.
Very pleased to report no uncoupling at all, as compared to random uncoupling with the standard issue. However, the rear dummy motor trailer consistently derailed on 2 points on the 'Up' line and no one could find any reason why other than maybe lack of weight. Time did not allow me to swap the end cars over and have the dummy being pushed through the points rather than pulled so I'm hoping to try that next week, along with running it both ways round the slightly tighter 'Down' line. It would be good to get it sorted as 'Heatherley' is booked for the Pendle Forest MRC 60th Anniversary show in Colne in November and I'll be pressed into operating the layout on the Saturday with my stock
Big  for the Hunts, though
Thats weird I took my New Chiltern Railway Slam door set to our club running day and although it runs through my crossover points
and the fiddle yard pointwork both pushing and pulling on my layout the DVT derailed in the fiddle yard at the club when at the front .
It never uncoupled at all and ran perfectly when pulled ,Another good thumbs up for the new knuckle version Hunt Magnetic couplings ,I have also fitted them to my Wrexham and Shropshire set with no problems at all . I have even fitted Hunts spring type to a rake of Farish coaches and again NO random uncoupling and a lot quicker to put on the modules at a club running session .
Hunts are working on a different plastic for their couplings as they are rather brittle and can brake when you fit them with fat clumsy old fingers like mine..Normal modelers will have NO problems though .But Hunts are very good I told them I had broken a couple of the original starter pack because of my fat fingers and they sent me a whole new pack ,VERY GOOD SERVICE .

The dummy power car shouldn't need any extra weight.
Check the back-to-backs of the wheels, that the bogies are free to rotate and as they're now more solidly joined, that the close coupling mechanism is working correctly. Also worth checking that the Hunt coupling used on the power car is the correct length.
Steven B
I have recently run all 11 of my HSTs, all fitted with Hunt magnetics and am happy to report that none of them have this issue. It is worth checking that the kinetic coupling is working as it should after fitting the coupling as it may have become disengaged and 'locked' up. I have also read elsewhere that some seem to rub on the underside of the chassis but again I've never encountered that issue. If it ran ok before then I would definitely look towards the kinetic coupling mechanism.
I've pulled both bogies off and they are completely free running. As soon as I put the body on there is something binding ever so slightly :confused1:
Can you narrow it down a bit by putting on 1 bogie at a time and seeing which one is binding? If so I'll have a look at 1 of mine to see if I can see a potential problem. Which HST have you got, I may well have 1 the same so would be best to look at the same one.

Not possible  With the bogies out I flicked the wheels and they turn very easily.
Put the bogies on some track and they run absolutely freely.
If I put one bogie on the only way to move it is to push it whilst holding the other end up which, to me, is not a test of friction
The 4 car set I have is 2D-019-005
Thanks for the help thus far
I only have 5 blue/grey power/dummy units but not that one
I'll have a look at 2D-019-004 the Swallow version though as it should be the same. Not sure if you have a spare coach bogie but you could sit 1 end of the loco body on that at 1 end, may need a shim or 2 to lift it off the wheels, fit the correct dummy car bogie and then try pushing it along the track. That's what I would try anyway
Ps, can't look yet as Mrs Fish is in bed unwell so I don't want to disturb her. I will do mt best to look later though. Look at the loco that is, not look at Mrs Fish. Well ok, I'll look in on her too :D
The wheels may be rubbing on the underside of the chassis. Check for marks next time you remove the bogies.

Looks like we have the club layout up and running again so last night I took some 'old' Farish stock along. These included old class 25, 33, 31 and 'not so old' class 37. All ran spectacularly well so I'll be taking these to the Colne show in November. OK, they don't have the fidelity of the more recent models but there will be times when other folk will be running my stock and I'm still of the opinion "if it looks like a class 25, it is a class 25"
Oddly I don't have a pic of my old Farish 33 which I'll have to remedy :hmmm:

The last 2 meetings I've been taking various locos and trains in order to decide what stock to take to the Pendle Forest show in 9 days time. Friend Rob decided to do a bit of filming. Now, Rob is a bit of a disaster when it comes to this as he never gets the idea of when to start and when to stop his filming. That, and me not knowing anything about editing resulted in this film of a Teddy Bear on mineral traffic on 'Heatherley'. In between the bad lurks a pretty decent clip of it

I hadn't noticed that, Ed. Rob puts his foot in it - literally
I was more interested in the canal /river scene and how it was modelled please.
The layout was built long before I joined so I'll try to find out next week.
The water does bear out
@Bealman in being black and does look the better for it (not George - the water)
:laughabovepost:
When the teddy bear train does finally debut it looks fab, though.
Was it cold when Rob made that video? He appears to be shivering.

Just a natural occurrence when you get to 77 :(
Luckily I have 18 years to go until I get there
I think you may have missed out the decimal point there.

OK - 18.0 years :P
I can tell when you're not telling the truth. Your lips move.
A question for you bright sparks. What is the reason for the white diagonal stripe painted on the side of mineral wagons?
Webbo
Hi webbo
https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/topic/67753-white-lines-on-wagons-what-do-they-denote/
@WebboDenoted Wagon had an opening door available
See article above
Chris
Thanks Chris,
But, these mineral wagons seemed to all have had opening doors on both sides.
The respondent in your link provided says: "The white diagonal bar denoted the end that had an opening door". Does this mean they had an opening door on one end only (seems unlikely to me), and if so, how did the stripe relate to the end that opened?
Come on folks, I would like a more convincing answer as these stripes seem to be ubiquitous.
Webbo
It's the end you put the batteries in :D ;)
Quote from: Bealman on November 09, 2024, 07:29:49 AMIt's the end you put the batteries in :D ;)
it denotes the end that has the opening door for tipping the contents. 2 ends of wagons do differ.
I've noticed as have a farish Wagon or two
I was about to add that, but you beat me to it, as usual, Chris.
Yes, the end door was one end only. Not all mineral wagons were so constructed.
Each time we set up James Street, I have to ensure that about 50 wagons are the right way round for the port's coal chute to the collier.....
Note that some mineral wagons had floor doors, these were denoted by a small '\ /' above the door positions in the middle of the wagon.

Now that's what I call devotion to duty.
I reckon if someone mentioned one was the wrong way round they'd get a smack from me >:D
I believe you now Chris. Sorry for my doubts.
I had a look at my Farish mineral wagon models, and indeed, the two ends of the wagons differ. The white stripe is on the doors end of the wagon it seems. So, these wagons could be unloaded from their ends. I've wondered about the stripes for a long time, but now I know.
Thank you,
Webbo
No worries
See George's confirmation
I was doing something and in a queue
The farish wagons you have looked at confirm the two different ends. Apologies I never made this clear
!
The club's N gauge layout 'Heatherley' will be laid up for a few weeks while we concentrate on another N gauge and an 00 gauge layout, but here's a shot of us at the Pendle Forest show a couple of weeks ago before kick off Saturday morning. We have 3 operators all the time with a 'reserve' of one or two to give the others a break/time off for good behaviour, plus one who operates the Faller bus service and answers questions. We aim to have something running at all times so there is much communication behind the fiddle yard.
L - R we have Mick (Treasurer), Steve (Father Christmas pleb), Yours truly (Pleb), friend Rob (Pleb) and Maurice (El Presidente)

Thank you for the team photo
Team of champions! :beers:
Heatherley back up and running at the club so first time out for my class 41 having been modified by
@Ensign Elliott . If this works I will post another couple......

Looks good but those six wheel milk tankers need to be absolutely filthy.
I've just purchased three more to go with my existing filthy ones.
It'll seem a shame to severely weather the new ones but that's the way I always remember them.
Your Class 41 looks the business.
Parcels train looked just as impressive Mick as well as the milk tanks

And the milk tanks are supposedly weathered. It's the Dapol factory weathered set of class 22 + 6 tanks.
I agree they need further work >:D

I bought the bookset with the Hymek and the united creameries silver tanks. It was my post-divorce present to myself and my reintroduction to model railways 16 years ago.
The layout you're running on is absolutely beautiful.
Thank you. It's our club layout 'Heatherley' and I can't accept any kudos as it was built long before I joined the club. It's somewhat long in the tooth (like me) and a new layout is being built at present which will be an end to end one
Well, if
@Nbodger can have a steamy journey, then I can have a steamy evening at the club layout so here's 3 vids from last night (BTW - I tried the J50 on the coal hopper train and it hauled them all with no issues.)

All three running smoothly and quietly.
You know, that really is a rather nice layout, Mick. What do they plan to do with it when they retire it?
No idea, George. There's been no talk of retiring it.
Too big for my little abode, that's for sure
I am taking my B H E G W R Twin railcars to the club tomorrow as we are testing the new control panel on Paddock Hill .
And we are going to run our NEW Layout Wokingham as well ,this layout is still under construction as its going to be a highly detailed model of Wokingham in the 50 /60s including dummy 3rd rail ,the track is able to operate but the scenery is still being built as all the buildings are scratch built scale models built by Gary Robinson ,
Over 18 months of painstaking research took place before it was started and a new member Rob Evans has taken drone photos of the church and 3D printed it it looks amazing and even has sound installed ,he has now taken drone photos of the signal box whick is about to be demolished so that will keep Gary busy for a few days .Drone permision was applied for and granted so all legal .
Any Forum members are welcome on our running days on the last Saturday every month ,We meet at The West London Aero Club White Waltham which is a very busy active airfield .
Bob
PS we are NOT running the modules as there is not enough room for layouts and modules .
Hello Bob
I live in the SL6 area, so I should really get along to your club. I look forward to any photos of the Wokingham layout , as in my youth I followed Slough Town F C and seem to remember the Wokingham ground very near to the railway - it was a FA cup tie.
Having been away from the club for a couple of weeks thanks to a chest infection some kind soul brought along to share ( :veryangry2: ) I took my class 24 recent purchase along for a couple of vids. Sorry about the first one but some :censored: pop up obscured the off button so I wobbled the phone somewhat trying to stop the vid :-[
I also thought the loco was growling a bit and then found someone had set the controller with feedback on, so they got a verbal clip round the lughole.
I've not decided what disc codes to shown on the loco so it has 'em all lit up at present
The Dapol B1 in the second one was another chap's and seemed to trundle around quite happily

Hope you are over that infection
Chris
A different perspective in the first vid, Mick - I like it! I have a Dapol engine just like that, by the way - won it in the NGF raffle! It's a nice runner too.
3 clips from last night's meeting. If you intend watching them I suggest you mute your volume so as to avoid some Yorkshire bloke waffling on/swearing. For some reason my Dapol Britannia didn't like the uneven board joints of the club layout so had to be taken off. These BachFar models soaked it up........

I'm aware the POS vehicle in the mail train rake is wrong era but I like it so.......... :P ;)
Not a good night at the club last night
I took my Kato class 800, my blue Hymek and blue Western (Dapol) along with a mix of Dapol and Farish blue parcels stock.
With the stock mixed up I suffered lots of random uncoupling yet when I put all the Farish in one rake and the Dapol in another, all was fine despite Dapol locos hauling Farish stock
@CH Meanwhile, my friend Rob's Farish A4 coughed and spluttered and was eventually removed. His 4MT 2-6-0 suddenly lost it's tender when run tender first. The first I saw was when a tender came through Heatherley station on its own  Then a full rake of Farish crimson/cream MK1s derailed in the fiddle yard and it looked like a re-enactment of the Harrow & Wealdstone crash :o :(
Queue to get on the layout this week so I stood aside, but as it was the eve before VE Day I got Rob to run my wagons around behind his WD (they're the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th from the front)

Do the other tracks work too? :D
Yes, but Rob likes to use the other oval and he runs everything at breakneck speed so I try to avoid any of his stuff in my vids. Also, the fiddle yard control panels are about 6-7ft apart which makes it bloovery difficult to operate both a la Ben Hur
Was that prototype Deltic yours?
 It was Rob's
