Title: Rolling Road
Post by: devonjames on October 12, 2023, 04:54:54 PM
Does such a thing exist as a standalone rolling road that doesn't rely on blocks sitting on a piece of track?   Ideally I want something that is a self contained one piece unit that I can use away from my layout and just wire a controller into.  Google hasn't thrown up anything helpful yet but I guess one of the european manufacturers may offer something.

Is this any use to you?

or this perhaps

Just a thought.

Gaugemaster used to offer a test bed comprising a cased controller with rolling road on top. Model LT, it was capable of supporting multiple scale I think.

Expensive though.

Personally I find my set of old Bachrus Saddle rollers perfectly fine sat on a spare length of Unitrack, and easy to adjust to different locos.

Ah yes, thanks.  I hadn't seen the Zenner one (the top link) and that looks like it's what I'm looking for.

That is a good unit, I've had mine for about 25 years now. Unfortunately, not made for a long time now, as I found out when trying to get a set of N gauge rollers from them, which they used to sell as an option. They now recommend the DCC Concepts one when asked.

This one, for N-gauge only, is somewhat cheaper - and co-incidentally the one that I have:

N-gauge rolling road (https://tencommandmentsmodels.co.uk/product/rolling-road-n-long/)

I have the mini 200 mm version, which I picked up from a very nice lady at the Stuttgart show (the original supplier?) who let me transfer the money to her later because I did not have enough cash!! She also gave one away to a small boy who was fascinated by it. I purchased a couple more rollers from Ten Commandments at the Wakefield show some years later, when he first had it on offer. I don't see the rollers as spares though.

I have felt the need for one myself so I intend to make one. As already posted I too don't really like the units that sit on the rails so what I have in mind it will be a 'stand alone'.

I've bought quite a few things off Ali Express....The service is pretty good.

Yup. My son buys custom left-hand bass guitars,  train models "in the style of Lego", and other bits and pieces :)  I've had a couple of small electronic items.

I once had a retailer on AliExpress send me something in error. They were so desperate to resolve it and me not leave negative feedback or escalate it I assume they're held to very high standards. I've bought a couple of carbon bicycle frames, and multiple sets of wheels, all of which have been great. They're brilliant for small items if you're not in a rush.

The only time I bought anything off AliExpress, a week later two tiny charges were made on my Debit Card, $0.02 and $0.06 from two different unknown Chinese operators.

I cancelled my card instantly and got another one.

If you use Ali, watch your charges and always make sure you use your Credit Card, so you have maximum protection.

Ross.
