Title: Farish Update
Post by: RichardBattersby on June 14, 2012, 12:23:54 PM
Apologies if you've already seen this but Farish have recently posted this update on it's engineering samples of the Class 70 plus some coaches.

I've done a quick google but can't find out what the MKI RU is? Can anyone enlighten me?

I somehow managed to forget to put the link in. Here it is:

http://www.bachmann.co.uk/details.php?id=33&vis=2 (http://www.bachmann.co.uk/details.php?id=33&vis=2)

Thanks Paul. How does this differ from the buffet car? Seems to have a kitchen.

Hi

I would have to check my Parkin book, unfortunately I am at work at present so won't be able to until this evening.

Cheers

The RU has seats for 33 diners and a kitchen. Most were rebuilt in the 1970s to RBs - 10 seats were removed and a buffet with counter installed. Externally one window was plated over on the kitchen side, behind the buffet counter.

I could do with a Stanier buffet/restaurant coach to make up a magic WCML train, I'm using a Dapol restaurant coach to 'make do' for probably a long time. Cheers john.

Apart from kit building right now you are out of luck. But there may be some hope at least on the kitchen car of thei pair you'd really want as Bachmann have done a 50' brake and are doing a 50' kitchen car in OO. This is basically the same underframe as the inspection saloon they are doing for the NGS too..

The problem with the current Farish Staniers is that they have only produced a 57ft underframe (so far) which rules out around 3/4 of the total number of types which were on longer 60 and 64 ft underframes. (excluding the 68ft 12 wheel diners/sleepers as highly unlikely for RTR production) This includes the buffet, 60 ft open firsts (commonly use as seating for diners) and the most common Stanier coach of the lot - the 60ft Corridor Composite...

There is hope though of other lengths. As Alan says, the NGS Inspection Saloon gives then a 50ft underframe which opens the possibility of a Stanier Full Brake and Kitchen Car, but the kitchens seem to have been most commonly used sandwiched between a pair of 60ft opens.

Just to broaden the thread slightly, in this months RM Graham Hubbard (MD) has said the Blue Pullman will be released at Warley, and the 5MT and WD will be in the shops mid June (by my calculation that's this weekend). The new Class 20 will be at TINGS in September along with development samples of the J39 and the Ivatt 2-6-2T.
There is a review of the WD in the mag - it looks great, and there will be a review of the 5MT next month

I know Farish are producing an Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0. It this the one you meant or something else? Dapol have produced an Ivatt tank in the past.

This is good news. Thanks! Not sure whether I'll be able to get to TINGS this year. Got two 20s on preorder! Did he say anything about the 08s?

I have checked the mag again and it definitely says 2-6-2T but, like you, I reckon this could be a typo, and hopefully they mean the 2-6-0 ???

No, but there is a full page ad about Farish shunters and they state the 371-020 black early emblem and the 371-022 green with wasp stripes will be available soon from retailers

Good to see Farish getting their release dates fairly accurate. People hate waiting.
Dapol on the other hand need to get their act together........are we not still waiting for the 2012 catalogue bearing in mind it's mid June?!!!

Oddly Farish were once as bad as Dapol are now - the class 101 was nearly ten years later than promised and many other things were persistantly late. Dapol, who once were good and quick in launching product, have slipped badly in the last few years while some of the Farish promises have tightened up, although not all - the iminent old era class 08 has been a long time coming and aren't we still waiting for the Ivatt 2MT (how many years now?).

They both could improve.

H.

I noticed this news too.

Great if the 5MT is early, I had't expected it for another couple of months.

I am very keen to see the J39 development model, I have had a couple of these on order since they were first announced. I am especially interested to find out if it will reuse the existing B1 tender-drive or have a loco-drive with the new coreless motor. I know Farish said all newly announced steam would go down the loco-drive route, but I'm not sure if this one (or indeed the 2MT - I feel sure this is the 2-6-0 Tender by the way) is classed as "newly announced". Not that I am unduly bothered either way, the B1 tender drive is extremely good IMHO, just curious.
