I have started trying to get a full rake of the same wagon i.e at least 10/11 wagons idealy more but as soon as i have around 3 they vanish off the shelves then appear on ebay at vastly inflated prices.
On my meager income i can't afford to spend £20 per wagon for 10 in one hit so can only get 1 at a time as and when i have spare cash is this how everyone else goes about it?
I always see just what i want at a good price when i have no money then nothing is around when i have it.If i forget an auction that i'm watching on the bay a wagon makes nothing a couple of quid if i remember it they go to £18!! for a second hand £20 wagon??.
Also why are all the wagons i like the expensive ones?
So at the moment i have 3 100t tank wagons, 3 sealions, 4 sliding wall vans.
Am i just impatient does it take a very long time to gather a full rake together?
Dave
Hi Dave,
I know how you feel. I'm looking for certain BAR freight cars but at the moment they are way beyond what I'm prepared to pay. I have one after 1 year looking. You may find what your looking for at model railway shows or why not put a request in the Wants section.
Alex
We don't get many shows etc. down here as we don't have many bordering counties so it's not deemed worth putting them on
If i travel i'm spending money on fuel that could buy a wagon :-\ .
at least i'm not the only one struggling
Dave
i gave up with my rake of seacows and make it a mixed rake,,,,,,,,,,,, but i am planning on completing a full rake of them,,,,
I had been looking to buy a few N.E. Fish vans for a rake and they have been out of production for a few years. They were fetching over £5 or £6 on ebay. Someone gave a tip off about obsolete stock being available at Alton Model Railway Centre.
Picked up 5 new and boxed for the original price of around £4.25 each. Worth a try, no connection other than a very satisfied customer.
It can take a long while. When Farish brought out some of the new more detailed stuff the old pizza cutters came up cheap, and that's how i got my rake of 100t tankers. I'm now going to slowly replace them with the new ones.
I have looked at the sealion kits but they are the same price as the RTRs
Dave
Dave - as Alex said, why not put a 'wanted' ad in that section. You may find someone is looking to shift some and even if not, it can stick in someone else's mind you are on the lookout for something.
It always helps if you have the model reference number and a pic if possible

If you mean just replacing the Poole Farish 100ton tanks with equivalent BAchfar then there's probably no point - the only real difference is the finer profile blackened wheels - and you can buy these separately and fit them to the older stock.
Cheers,
Alan

Thanks Dr Al, that will save me money AND having to weather them all again!
Either it's down to the choice of wagon, or just bad luck :(
So far I've built up a 14 strong rake of Farish container wagons (mix of new and eBay), 16 VGAs that are gradually being reliveried (all from eBay), and nearing completion of a rake of 24 PGA hoppers (all new). The VGAs were all acquired fairly quickly over a couple of months as they go cheap second-hand, but the others have been a gradual process including birthday and christmas presents :)
