Title: New Farish Nuclear Flask Carrier...suitable loco / train...advice please?
Post by: Skyline2uk on June 01, 2012, 05:31:45 PM
Evening all!

So I don't know when its going to be released, but I rather fancy one of the Farish flask wagons. My question is, what to run it with?

If I was modelling the current seen I would invest in a DRS loco, but "Filton TMD" is late 90's (last days of BR, first days of EWS), so what would be appropriate for this time period?

My research to date suggest that a pair of HEA hoppers would be suitable barrier wagons, is this correct? What about a brake van?

Any help gratefully received.

I have a photo of 33035 Spitfire in full NSE Toothpaste picking up a flask at Dungeness Powerstation.....

it all depends where your layout is based to what locos were used on them

For the late BR period it is very much regional, but a nice pair of class 31s would do the trick; withe at least on in railfreight coal livery. HEAs were used as barriers in some cases, but the brake vans could easily be replicated by a couple of Queen Marys...at least one in SR livery!

Hi There;

Assuming Filton TMD is roughly in the Brizzle area (& within a 40-50 mile radius)... you could have the following choices...with HEAs as barriers & a brake van for branch work (level crossings)...

2 x BR Blue 20 (or one in Red Stripe Railfreight)
1 (or 2) Coal Sector 31s
BR Blue 37
Dutch/Blue or any colour 33
Class 73 in any livery except Gatwick Express

Or alternatively...go with whatever you fancy..

Later;

I concur the Berkeley flask trains i can remember seeing are pairs of 20's, 31's and 37's.
Usually with hea barrier wagons and a  brake van or two. You had to have somewhere to put the nuke police escorts.

I would buy some of the new flask wagons but i'm  more a 70's/80's period and I'm pretty sure they didn't have the huge numbers on flask hoods. Will just have to give tpm my business again! Already have one waggon completed all bar the decals from a couple of years back for an abortive Berkeley diorama

nuclear flask trains are interesting...
i have thought about doing a mirco layout based on.. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/43235-saxmundham-and-the-sizewell-coal (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/43235-saxmundham-and-the-sizewell-coal)   <<<< that place.
did findout some interesting stuff on these trains, does anyone know if its true that the second loco always has to be running and have a driving in it when on the move?

Yes STU, Filton TMD is indeed roughly in Brizzle.

I have seen some photos of 31's on nuke duty...but that class is not currently in my fleet (but that could be rectified!).

However, I can provide both a 33 and 73 in "Dutch", so that should be my first choice.

....although Greybeema's suggestion could give me a reason to pick up "Spitifre", something I have nearly done so many times!

Thanks again guys.

Queen Marys were used with 31s on the Trawsfynydd runs via Blaenau Ffestiniog. In part because there was no loop so the entire train was propelled slowly in one direction.

I saw several flasks being hauled by class 60's on the wcml in the Wigan area around 1992. Although coal sector 31's were the usual traction.

If it's any help, DRS have been transporting the flasks since 1997, usually with 37s or 20s in pairs (or mixed pairs), but 57s and 66s have also been noted on them.

Chris I have to admit that an original livery DRS class 47 is very tempting...seen some at reasonable prices too.

Also came across a webiste (lego trains of all things) that said some HEA's had thier hoppers removed leaving just the chassis for barrier duty. This may be investigated when I switch from layout building to stock work.

The new farish 20's are out soon, i'd wait for them. I know it's a bit out of region (Bristol born and bred so I should know !) but they do look good with the flasks...  ;D

Most of the flasks i saw in the Bristol area had 31's in Dutch livery - this was about 1993 to 1995 ish.

Ohhh new 20's!? When are they due then? Any chance one will be in coal sector (probably a long shot but Red Stripe is too early for me).

The new Farish 20's are BR green, BR blue with headcode box and BR blue with Discs and weathered.

The HEA wagons converted to runners were recoded on TOPS to RNA.

Thy stopped using runner wagons after 1998? They certainly havent used them since 2002. From 1988 on of the FHAC CD class 31s is the allocated pool. I dont have a combine to hand. From 1994/95 things began changing when anything could turn up on it. Ive seen 56004 on the bridgewater flasks in 1996. Then DRS arrived and the 20s reappeared then a mix of 37s 47s 57s and 66s have worked it. A pair of 20s 303/304 worked the berkley-crewe flasks today. First time weve had a pair in years.

Im hoping that Farish do a class 37/6 in DRS too and announce It this year!
It would certainly boost their Nuke Flask sales. Most model shops i have been into have many of these models on the shelves still!

I am out of Peco 15' w.b. chassis (NR-122) which is used under a number of kits, including the Runner unfortunately.

Runners have varied over the years. Those in the picture are 4-wheel container wagons PFA, either the Standard wagon or Procor type at a guess.  C-Rail do a kit for one of the PFA designs. At another time some converted OBAs (with sides removed and brackets on the floor) were used.

I cant say ive ever seen those used on the train ive seen. I wonder if they are more sellafield based because certainly the Bridgewater/Berkley trains havent used barriers since the old RNAs went out of use. Of course im happy to be proved wrong.

Sadly not the bottom of my garden. That is the Oykel or Shin Viaduct. My garden is a hundred plus miles farther south.

Hello again,

I am slowly getting back into working on the layout, but thinking I should try something different to keep the interest up. To that end (and in keeping with this thread), I have been looking at suitable HEAs in the various shops online and then I went to the TPM website....

Mr B, I see the 615 RNA Nuclear runner wagon's are still shown as out of stock, is this a shortage of the chassis still? Any idea when you would get some more in? Oh, and as there etched brass details, how would you recommend securing these (sorry, newbie question!).

Yes, the lack of the Peco chassis is the problem. At the moment I don't know when I'll be getting some more.
For fitting the etched details I'd recommend a small amount of 5-minute epoxy, reinforced with liquid cyano (superglue) that can run into any gaps still unglued to provide a good, firm fitting - the 5-minute enables accurate positioning which is tricky with the instant gluing action cyano can have.

GAH! Thanks Dave.....

I am really tempted but:

A) It will probably go past the price of ones direct from TPM
B) Feel a bit of a heal asking Bernard for advice and them getting them from fleebay!

I would much rather support the manufacture if I could  :worried:

Don't worry about point B. I can't supply at the moment anyway, but if you get them and have them running around, then they're a sort of advertisment anyway.
Yes, watch point A - the first figure is a little below current price including postgae, but not much.

Don't worry about point B (http://don't%20worry%20about%20point%20B)

Thank you Bernard, sort of thought you wouldn't mind, but its polite to ask especially as you gave some good advice. A

if you get them and have them running around, then they're a sort of advertisment anyway. (//http://#039;re%20a%20sort%20of%20advertisment%20anyway.)

lol, well this is true, but you are assuming I do a half decent job of building them!

As for the price, well I will watch them and see.

If they do arrive at Filton, will of course keep progress updates
