Title: Blacken Union Mills wheels chemically
Post by: Snowwolflair on April 01, 2023, 09:20:23 AM
Does anyone have experience of blackening Union Mills loco wheels to get rid of the unrealistic bright silver rims.

I just use a Sharpie type permanent marker and that seems to work OK.

When I tried, Dr Al suggested Carrs chemical blackening, once dry clean all the tyres to allow pickup. It worked well for me, applied with a microbrush with a cotton tip rather then bristles

@maridunian (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2947)  of this parish suggested a black sharpie to me, and not only does it work electrically, but improves the looks no end!

Yeh - I'd go the black Sharpie route

I bought the Carrs ultra toxic chemical blackening kit just weeks before we had our house guests, so I never got to try it out. I do have a number of these locos to try it on, and when we get our house back, I will let you know how it goes.

Eviction Moving out day is today, to a lovely 2-bed Council maisonette in Melton but there are still rather a lot of toys in the house that are not mine...

I used a Sharpie type permanent marker as Colin Heard at UM suggested to me. I was able to 'paint' the shiny bits without taking either the engine or tender apart. So far, about 6 months, it has not come off.
Cheers.

I'm afraid I've been collecting again. An Orribly Oversized 2-BIL EMU and a PWM shunter.
But In my defence, I have sold a Hornby Ferry Van. Unfortunately I now have replacement Rapido ones...

These agents contain Selenium and are VERY toxic
