Title: Guards Van or Brake Van
Post by: meddyliol on December 02, 2022, 05:03:24 PM
I have a Farish WD Austerity (weathered) along with a mixture of wagons. I could do with getting a Brake/Guards Van to finish it off. I am not one to have a perfect set with all the correct ages etc. Just want something that looks half decent. Can anyone recommend a used example (preferably but not absolutely necessary Farish).

Farish do a nice ex LMS brake van, or there's the BR one based on the LNER van. Plenty used on that selling site.

Peco do nice brake vans.  Also, Minitrix did a BR example many years ago.

Best wishes

Thanks everyone but does it really matter to me what type to get? There seems to be loads of different ones from all ages.

What area and era do you model, please?

Each of the Big Four had its own design, which are available as models. Then BR developed the standard brake van from the ex LNER design.

In BR days, company designs did tend to go all over the country, except, as far as i have seen, the ex GWR end balcony Toad.

As I explained (probably not very well), at the moment I am not really interested in any specific era etc (might do in the future if I live long enough). Just want something to look half decent (to a layman that is, not to a real enthusiast which I am not). So anything that looks OK that is driven by a steam loco will do me (for now).

I'd suggest Peco NR-28B or Minitrix N501
If you prefer Farish then 377-300

Then the choice is yours........except I'd avoid the Minitrix and Lima models from thirty odd years ago, as their scale is suspect.

I am not recommending any of these, just showing what you could use; references are purely for illustration of the types available, and other sellers are available.

For use behind an Austerity, they would really need to be in BR livery, as the loco dated from 1943, and your loco is probably in BR livery.

Any of these can be used in BR days, note that livery could be bauxite or grey.

Thanks gents, what would I do without you all. I haven't been on the forum for a while, haven't been feeling too good. It seems the only time I do use it is when I need help, I do not have the skill set to help anyone else (on model rail anyway). All I can say is thanks very much to everyone on this forum for giving me very valued help and advice.

Brian The Snail   :dunce:

P.S. Don't know much about Peco but am willing to learn.

Hopefully, giving and receiving advice is one of the benefits of being on the Forum.......

Happy to give help.

Please re-read my post, as I've modified it twice since initially posting it.

Apart from general chat, (and the good jokes), that, to me, is what the forum is all about. I would think that about 75% of what I know about railway modelling I have picked up from this forum. . Hope you are feeling better now.  :)

P.S. Don't know much about Peco but am willing to learn.

I like Peco wagons as they are very reasonably priced which allows me to re-wheel them with Farish wheels (379-410 or 379-411). They are also detailed enough for the eyesight I have.
Why re-wheel? Older Peco wagons have plastic wheels and many state that leaves more muck on the track as opposed to metal wheels. I believe, but could be wrong, the newer Peco wagons have metal wheels from the outset.

Obviously some new use of the word 'good' which I haven't previously come across.

You obviously spend too much time putting 12 foot plus, (or whatever size they are now), layouts into the 6' x 4' shed! (And walking Mable ... and making Mrs N's tea ... and photographing trains ... etc.).   :nerner::P ;)

Yeah, there's  nowt wrong with the venerable Peco wagons. I even like the ones with plastic wheels!

I reckon they're great value for money.

I have bought this one from eBay - Graham Farish N Gauge 377-310A LMS Grey 20T Brake Van 730081. Era 3 so should be OK with my Loco.

Is the loco LMS?

But if you're not too worried, that should be fine.

If I recall correctly the weathered WD is late crest i.e. 50s/60s but your last sentence renders it perfectly acceptable :D
