Title: Toys for Refugees
Post by: Bob G on September 21, 2022, 12:36:02 PM
My wife and I are in the process of welcoming a family (mum, and two boys, age 1 and 4) into our home as refugees from Kyiv. They have their Visas and are currently figuring out how to get here. We probably have a couple of weeks before they arrive, maybe less. Thankfully, mum speaks and writes English.

I wondered if anyone lives near us (between Melton Mowbray and Nottingham) and happens to have any toys for the children they no longer need, if you could PM me.

So far, we have accrued a cot, cot mattress and bedding, highchair, two car seats, a stroller, some wooden bricks, Lego, some toy cars and a scooter.

We are also looking for a bike for the older child and a couple of stair gates (top and bottom, and also possibly for the railway room/server room for my home business). I think the N gauge room will definitely be off limits, so we need to find other distractions.

We have undergone training by a placement charity not to expect them to want us to be part of their family. At the end of the day, we are just giving them sanctuary, but I hope they might want to go to the Great Central Railway! Or Twycross Zoo! The boys will also have a Christmas and both their Birthdays (November and January) away from home too, so we want to do all we can to make them feel safe and secure.

Thanks
Bob

Bob,
Have a look around your local charity shops - they should have something suitable.

I'd suggest taking them shopping for toys when they arrive - mum will know what they enjoy playing with.

If you've not already done so, make sure your bookshelves and cupboards are secured to the wall (some children are climbers!) and it might be worth getting some catches to stop them opening kitchen cupboards containing cleaning materials.

Everything has been given to me free so far. Including a John Lewis Cot.

I agree with the cupboards, but climbing always brings risks, whatever your age :)
