According to RMweb, Dapol has just announced the steam locomotive 63xx in N gauge.

At last. A WR Mogul.
Sadly, knowing Dapol's gestation times I probably won't be around to see one or will be too senile to recognise one.
Is a 63xx the same as a 43xx?
There were leaflets at TINGS. I'm afraid I only had a quick peep, they were next to the Battle of Britain CAD leaflets, but hopefully the gestation time will be shorter.

I hope so as the only 63xx I'm aware of is a diseasel, but that could just be my ignorance :dunce:

Yes. The '43xx' class was built from 1911 to 1925, almost all at Swindon. Engines numbered in the '63xx' series appeared at the end of 1920.
Another twenty, to a modified design, were built in 1925 - these were the '93xx' class and had outside steam pipes. side-window cabs and screw reversers.
Best wishes
John
Well this is heartening news.
I was beginning to think that Dapol were turning their backs on steam locos in N. Also dropping the cardan shaft is IMO a good move.
The proposed Dapol versions are as follows:
6336 Green "Great Western" livery
6385 Green GWR Shirtbutton livery
7301 Green G W R
6324 BR Black early crest
6364 BR Green early crest
7310 BR Green late crest
As shown on main TINGS thread

What I don't understand is why every manufacturer always makes the most recent version of a loco.
I'm a bit GWR biased so that is what I know most of.
45xx and 63xx with outside steam pipes, 45xx with window shutters.
Many examples ran without the outside steam pipes in their later life so the period the model could be used in would be much longer.
Or would Dapol bring two different versions? That would be great since I want to run early 1920 period.

I thought the spec was for early and late versions?
How far back do the proposed versions go? I'm not au fait with GWR logo timelines.
Bob
The Dapol spec sheet at TINGS indicates that there will be early and late build versions with and without outside pipes, numbered in the 5390-7321 range and covering the 1920 through 1964 period.
That is very good news!
I should have read the information sheet better instead of only looking a the pictures :-[
Moguls started appearing with outside steam pipes in the early 1920s so Dapol are modelling locos suitable from then right through to 1964. It looks like the smaller details like buffers and valve covers will be modelled to allow "early" and "late" versions.
Between this, the Light Pacifics and the 120 from RevolutioN, this is going to be an expensive year. I had better start saving!

Partly because there isn't much rolling stock suitable for pre-1938. The biggest selling period is usually the late-50s to 60s (the Transition era) so development tends to focus there with efforts made to go as far back as possible to involve earlier modellers. I don't expect to see much in the way of pre-grouping stuff unless it was particularly long lived (like these Moguls).
I would temper the enthusiasm a little as Dapol's recent record hasn't been good. The West Country has been on and off for ten years, and is still not past CAD stage! It's a shame that they and Bachmann have lost their way with producing models in N, but it is good that the new kids on the block (Revolution, Sonic, Rapido, etc) have taken up the slack. I may be wrong, and maybe it will turn up within a couple of years, but I won't be holding my breath!

More in hope rather that expectation, I have ordered 3, but while I am waiting, I can enjoy the one I completed during lockdown
