The Giro d'Italia starts Friday 6.5.22 with Mark Cavendish in the race and possibly Vincenzo Nibali's farewell ride. Highlights on Quest at 19.00hrs for me. Cav won't be at the Tour de France.
Is it confirmed that Cav won't be riding the Tour? Thought it was still between him and Jakobsen?
Read it today in the media (so it must be true). They reckoned both would be too much.
Just thought I'd let you know Mick (and other cycling fans) that the 2022 tour de france has started.
Is it going anywhere near you Joe, and will we be able to see you waving at the camera?
Yes, and No :)

Started... I think 1st place is already decided ;)
Just got to get to Paris now but that's half the battle.

Thanks, Joe. I've been watching it since the kick off in Denmark :)
We're on holiday in France and we have watched the stage to Planche des belles filles last friday.
There was a field full of Belgian fans and they had this car:

I was made up to see how well Chris Froome rode in today's stage :claphappy:
Gary Imlach suggested it may signify Chris's return to contender in big tours but I'm just content to see him go so well today and hope his stamina can maintain this level.
What a cracking Tour.
Thankfully my first week prediction of it all being sewn-up already was wrong and we've had some very interesting racing. Vive la Tour!
Some absolutely stellar performances, especially from the usual suspects e.g. Pogacar, Van Aert and still the odd flash from, dare I say, veterans like Quintana. Thomas surprises me by being as good as he is and Jonas Vingegaard has been an absolute revelation this year.
Jumbo - Visma have been the team of this year's tour.
I'm already looking forward to La Vuelta :bounce:
For all you bikers out there the 2024 Tour de France started today - in Florence, Italy
What a result for Romain Bardet!!
I was a little surprised to see Sir Mark Cavendish there but he all but passed out in the heat.
This does not bode well although I'd love to see the guy win one more stage win to be the most winning stage chap
That was a good finish to watch, expected them to get caught just before the line as happens so many times and great to see a French winner. Lots of suffering at the back of the bunch and still three weeks to go.
Dave
Cav said he had it all under control despite having a chunder and getting across the line with just 10 minutes left on the cut off clock
It's official!!!
Sir Mark Cavendish (aka The Manx Missile) is now the best sprinter in the world of Tour de France road cycling, yesterday beating the 4 decade long record of 34 stage wins by the great Eddie Merckx.
Cav took his 35th stage win on the 5th stage of the Tour de France and I am just so, so pleased for the man :claphappy: :claphappy: :claphappy:
Absolutely awesome ride by Tadej Pogacar today.
I'm starting to think the only thing that'll beat him is himself or the strain of Covid running through the ranks :hmmm:
Seems grossly irresponsible for Geraint Thomas to keep riding, bizarre choice. At best he'll have a torrid week suffering with 'mild' symptoms, at worst he'll infect dozens of other riders.
Awesome that Cav got the stage win, so pleased for him, and wonderful to see the queues of people wanting to congratulate him!
The GC race has been great, Vingegaard has been far stronger than I expected, but Pogacar certainly put his stamp on the race today.
I was seriously brassed off about Cav's penalty for 'veering' as what else was he supposed to do? Just run headlong into another rider? All he did was take avoiding action, from what I saw of it.
An amusing incident on Pogacar's stunning ride yesterday - he collected a drinks bottle from a support car and, rather than chuck the empty one on the road he lobbed it through the open rear window of another support car and then realised it wasn't his team's vehicle
Yes I imagine the Intermarche guys were a little caught off guard by that one.
A stunning ride by Pogacar this year. He and Vingegaard are just on another level. In any other year Evenepoel would be smashing it too, I feel for him in a way. It's like a three-class race: Vingegaard and Pogacar, then Evenepoel, then everyone else.
I'm a bit sad there's no ceremonial stage tomorrow, it'll be odd just ending with a TT,feels anticlimactic.

Agree that time trial stages aren't the best for entertainment but it could still be interesting.
The gaps further down the top ten are close enough that things could still shift if someone has a good or bad ride.

In Paris preparation for the Olympics takes priority over everything else at the moment :(
Yeah totally understand it, just seems a shame for the sprinters not to have one final huraah. I'm surprised as many of them have slogged their way through the Alps! I imagine there'll be some moderately sedate* times set in the TT today while riders enjoy it!
*that's relative of course, as even their 'not trying' is still brutally quick!
As a sports fan, I'm thrilled about the Giro d'Italia starting on May 6, especially with Mark Cavendish in the race and Vincenzo Nibali possibly riding his last Giro. Highlights will be on Quest at 19:00. By the way, if you're interested in fitness, check out BetterMe for an article (https://betterme.world/articles/how-many-calories-do-pull-ups-burn/) on how many calories pull-ups burn. It's a great resource for tracking your workouts and staying fit!
I'm no fan of Quest's pundits and much prefer ITV4 so have not watched a lot of the Vuelta this year. Guess I've binged on cycling what with the TdF and the Olympic track cycling
Great first stage of the Tour of Britain today.
Passing through my neck of the woods so I was roadside watching laps 1 and 2.
Even found a discarded bidon as a souvenir :claphappy:
Some big names taking part (Remco, Pidcock, Alaphilippe etc) so well worth a look.
You can watch the whole stage here: Tour Of Britain Stage One (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3adZuHFwZao)

Good to see Joe is taking a break while Kamala Harris cracks on with her campaign ;)

Think you want the groaner thread with that one... :D
Don't know if it's the Olympics/Paralympics or what, but this seems to have flown somewhat under the radar this year, particularly given the calibre of the field.
So many reasons...
Yes, the Olympic/Paralympics, there's an interesting Vuelta going on, Eurosport don't have the rights so they won't have been promoting it, there's been all kinds of funding problems in the last couple of years which probably created a lot of uncertainty about the race even happening, it feels like there's been a general ramping-up of the bike vs car culture war here in the UK so there's probably that too.
That last point's an interesting one. Do you think so? Whilst there's an insistence in the media on depicting a 'war' between motorists and cyclists I wouldn't say it's escalating or heightened at the moment.

And that insistence in the media is mainly there owing to certain so called "celebs" (e.g. Boris Johnson and Jeremy Vine) going round with their helmet cams on so the least transgression by anyone other than cyclists is immediately highlighted
Yeah, feels like it but it'll depend where you are and what media you're exposed to; just search for some Telegraph articles to get an idea of what I mean.
I really do need to stop reading road.cc though, their business model now seems to partly rely on highlighting everything bad that is happening to a cyclist somewhere to generate anger and engagement.
Now of course I appreciate this is very local to me but the village/region I live also appears to have a few people in community positions that appear to be quite anti-cyclist, which does get you wondering if it can be like this in a region that's renowned for it's mountain biking facilities what is it like elsewhere?
Hmmm, I don't want to start a war here on this thread but that's an interesting phrase you used there Newportnobby: "least transgression".
I appreciate we all make mistakes and we don't really want to live in a surveillance state but even as a car driver I'm shocked by what I often see. I drive less than I used to but there seems to have been a real increase in the number of people oblivious to their responsibilities when driving and willing to do dangerous/impatient overtakes of any kind of vehicle, many people still using mobile phones/texting while driving, ridiculous speeding, just general aggressive driving, red light jumping by anyone, yes cyclists included and my pet-peeve, people happy to drift way over white lines often on blind bends.
That in itself isn't anti-cyclist obviously but it doesn't make anyone any safer.
I do wonder if the rise of sat-nav has made us all less willing to accept there will often be delays, more likely to cut things to fine and get frustrated when they 'get stuck' behind a cyclist/tractor/bus/slower driver/roadworks etc.
I wonder if people drove more calmly when they didn't know for sure how long a journey 'should' take or they had to navigate as they went with maps and road signs?
Plus we're probably all driving more, further and on busier roads than we used to.
