Hi. over the last week or so I've noticed that the forum takes much longer to load and log in after signing in there can be a wait of several seconds, sometimes even longer.
This is happening on a Chromebook and windows10 laptop.
As this is unusual I thought I'd mention it.
Absolutely fine here and has been for several weeks now.

Great, does that mine mine's going to be OK now too?
been getting 'page unresponsive' for some weeks on and off, not sure if it is the forum, my tinternet, or part of being 'on report ' again :-[
Usually means one of the mods has nodded off on the keyboard again.
All okay here.
There keeps being periods where the database slows everything down, and makes the pages slow to load. It seems to be OK at the moment..... *touch wood*

Today it seems a little slow, rather than 'Go for a cup of tea while it loads'.
Not sure what that means?
Going along ok on my mobile here.
I find that the layout banner at the top of each page always finishes loading after everything else.
Are they high resolution pictures? Could slightly lower ones be used?
Several pages are taking >5 seconds to load - much slower than usual. The home page is taking longer to load on first visit. Gets better after logging in in.

Far too often I am told it's my ancient wheezing laptop at fault. Much of that is true but it's very odd other sites are perfectly acceptable to me. There is no other site I use which leaves me with a blank page while it goes off somewhere for anything up to 90 seconds or so. As one who has to read a lot more posts whether I'm interested or not it can be infuriating.
Are there issues with the Forum today as it's been the slowest I've ever seen it? I view it three or four times a day on iphone, ipad and Mac and it's usually good, but today it's very slow and has even given me a mainly blank screen with a slow server message at one point.

All good on my phone here in Australia :hmmm:
It is pretty snail like for me this morning. First time for ages that it's been slow.
Yep, same. 5.992 second page load time for this reply window.
Edit: and 21 seconds when I actually hit post.
Must be because I'm upside down.... it's fine here!
It's intermittently slow (it took 16 seconds just now between hitting 'reply' and the text box window opening). It's more like it is being slow to resolve the dns rather than a slow database issue. At other times it works fine.
Definitely a lot slower today than normal. Yesterday was not too good either, but today is extremely slow
Seriously, I'm on me head here, and it's like cutting through melted butter! Very, very speedy!
Slow here also for the last two or three days; think they must have replaced the hamster with a tortoise in the generator treadmill
Painfully slow for me today. So slow that I got bored of waiting for this page to load and opened another tab to browse today's news!
Galloping along here just fine. Wonder why it affects some people and not others?
Cheers,
Chris
Slow response here too. It is slow to get to a page, or create a reply, but actually then loads the content quickly. It is therefore indexing or lookups that cause the delays, not line speed or data transfer rate.
Taking ages to do certain things like loading pages after clicking 'Show all unread posts' or tagging folks for a PM
It's been sooooooo slow all day but SUDDENLY it's cracking along like lightning.
Someone must have put another 50p in the meter ;)

Belay that. Slow again
Yep, got to agree. Took 26 seconds from clicking on this thread to actually seeing it. My speed is currently 76Mbps.
Seems poor at times and back to it's usual a bit later.
I need to pay the bill tonight, and I'll raise a ticket with the host at the same time.
That's how it is here. I'm using on on three platforms with mixed results. I've cleared my cache on all three too just in case it was me.
Another issue I have is when I go into the site via my Google browser it brings up a different format, all larger red and black boxes rather than the normal forum view. There is a button top right which should allow me to press it and ask to see New posts since my last visit, but it doesn't function. I have to go into the topic that was live for me last time and then go back in the thread which then brings me back to the normal board. Not sure if that's me, because it only does it on my iPad?

Ahah, so that's the problem. ;)
You mean we're bribing the Police? :o
Hello all,
I've reported this to our hosting company, who are now looking into it.
Chris/Tank.
Seems much better this evening.
Still almost unusable here in Norfolk.....
Dave
As I started this thread, I'm checking in. Sadly it still is slow, not as bad as when I first reported it but very laggy, particularly in posting replies and going to another topic.
Other fora I use do not have this issue.
Hopefully the host company can sort it soon.
Further to the problems of a slow forum over the last few days, I am finding that on some pages, the banners are not visible. As I am typing this, the top banner is not visible, but the words 'N Gauge Forum' are there and to the left is the little square denoting that a picture is not available (?). Also, looking at some posts, some of the 'Like' etc icons are just showing the little 'no picture' icon, but others are showing. Is it part of the problem, or is it my set up? I don't think my ad blocker is active for this site. ???. Incidentally, the forum does seem a bit quicker now.
Firstly. Thank you Tank / Chris @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) . For all you have done, are going to make this forum a success. To the point slow as I'm on my phone on the move a lot, can be slow at times, Friday 5pm was particularly slow and patience required. Turned on and off and waited up to 3 minutes, got there in the end. 1pm Saturday running nicely.
Thanks for the reports.
So, the host did a few changes on the server, which has led to a better performance. Still not great. After some hours it seems to have stopped some modifications from working.
Ideally, there needs to be a major update to the forum - which is difficult with so many modifications to the standard forum. It will cost hundreds to do. However, it needs to be done.
When is the money needed by?
(I will have to donate by Paypal 'Friends' as usual - if I donate via the forum, it might take months to get to you! ;D).
How much is needed and by when. I'm sure members would like to contribute
Dave
The forum is often somewhat slow (although not usually too bad), but hey, we're modellers, we don't need to rush.
As for changes, I'm sure many of us are willing to contribute - this is the only forum that I have contributed to a number of times, because there is always something of interest and a good atmosphere.
So, I have figured out that it seems to be a file issue. A handful of graphics seem to have owners/groups that the forum isn't allowing since the update. These need to be changed. One of the grahics/logo's for the top of the forum had the right owner/group, so that works again. I had to remove the others. Odd, as they were made an uploaded at the same time.
I'll work on the missing emoji's for the 'Ratings' in posts. This is basically the same issue. Annoying!
As for money for upgrades....I just need to get the ball rolling. It's going to be painful, and I will have to let someone else deal with it all. Weeks of work. I imagine that it's best to 'strip' the forum bare, and just allow it to function whilst the modifications are reworked and tested. I think it will be hard to give a proper cost, as it will all be trial and error, until it's all working.
Worked out how to do it! :claphappy: The 'ratings' icons are now back.
Thanks Chris @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) - nice to have the 'old' forum back and it is fairly flying along now.
Much improved. Ta muchly :)
I'm happy to chip in - I'm sure we need a reboot!
My PC literally blew up - smoke and a flash; the new PC has windows 11 and it now takes 3 attempts to log in to the forum, every time. Is this a Windows problem, am I blocking the forum or is it the Forum software?
Just noticed spell check - I always wondered why I was the only member with spelling mistakes; I would guess that this also relates to my updated PC.
Regards
Geoff
I've recently had a problem at lunchtimes, when using my work computer. It could be a change on the forum or to the company systems, but going to the home page fails and brings up a message about a transport method error. No other site is bringing this up. Going directly to Unread since last visit, allows me access with no problems. This does not seem to be a problem with other sites.
Not sure if its just me but the forum seems to have slowed noticeably again over the last few visits. taking between 3 and 6 seconds to load simple pages with no pictures.
Not nearly as bad as in September last year but thought worth mentioning in case it was the start of larger issues.
It's a wee bit slow here but not too bad.
This happens from time to time.
[Note to MODS: Please feed the hamster!]
I've been meaning to add my 2p worth to this thread in case it helps with the fault-finding but keep forgetting - d'oh. :headbutt:
Anyway, I only use my W!0 Enterprise Lappie to view the board so can't advise if I have a problem on any other devices but my issues are (and this is always the case, has been for the last couple of years or so):-
1. The forum is always slow to load for me, roughly between 5 and 10 secs (but has been MUCH longer, sometimes I've given up !) from clicking my Opera Speed Dial link (latest posts) to the post list appearing
2. Navigating between different threads, or pages in threads takes about the same amount of time.
3. Back-Paging or returning to the latest post list also seems to take anything up to 5 secs usually but can be more occasionally.
4. Finally, which I find weird although I don't understand ANYTHING about coding - lol is that the one thing that appears to happen speedily is once I've cherry-picked which posts I want to view, I always mark all as read to clear the list for my next visit, which 99% of the time happens almost immediately :confused1:
Dunno if that helps at all but just thought I'd put it out there. :) Still keep coming back for more coz even though I ain't got around to making my own setup yet, some of the threads are very entertaining and informative, well worth a good read.
##EDIT## It took almost 20 secs for my original, unedited post to upload if that makes any difference ?
According to Microsoft, Windows 10 is supported upto 14th October 2025
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro
There have been a few occasions over the last few days when the forum has been slow, but there does not appear to be any pattern. (Win11/Chrome).
Having replaced a defunct laptop with a reconditioned one which is lightning quick in comparison, it is showing up how slow the forum is to load. Often when trying to 'rate' a post it just sits there with 'Loading.................' until I give up on it and move on.
It took me six or seven goes to get a 'thank you' to register this morning, but that's nowt new. Happens a lot.
The forum is usually a bit slow for me, but does it matter? It only adds seconds of delay, but the content is well worth waiting for - and we're all in a hobby which is slow paced by its nature.

It may just be me, but I wouldn't regard 5-10 seconds to load as 'slow'. (I use Opera too.) That is perfectly acceptable to me. Anything over a minute, perhaps, would be a different matter but I can't recall ever having that with the forum. Maybe I am just lucky, or have a particularly good connection, although I'm not on fibre broadband. If you want slow, may I suggest Adobe? It is just awful and takes ages to load a PDF, let alone print one.
Cheers,
Chris
