Storm EunuchEunice is outside and revving her engine up. Next door's anemometer is tazzing round and round. Maybe up to 45-50mph so far but the Beeb website says winds in the 40's between 12.00 and 16.00 for us.
When it gets to wind in the 60's I'll accept it could be me :-[
Hope everyone gets through unscathed.

I hope the weather 'male chicken' (changed by forum) on the roof of your conservatory survives ?
Here in Telford we seem to have been spared the worst of it, certainly the wind isn't as bad as the previous storm. I was a good citizen, however, getting the dog walking out of the way earlier and holing up indoors for some styrene butchery until the all clear sounds.
PS: Anyone know what we're supposed to be stockpiling during this one? I've not been watching the TV
Yes here in north Manchester the wind is just getting up to speed now. We usually do shopping on a Friday morning for us and my 83 year old father in law, we went yesterday afternoon after all the warnings. We would probably have been ok this morning but I am not sure what it will be like in the railway room later this afternoon, it does get a bit frightening up there.
Dozens of trees down in this area, probably the most since October 1987 flattened the local wooded areas. Very very strong wind.
No trains running (GTR ie Southern / Thameslink issued an amusingly blunt instruction to day to 'go home' and 'if you've already travelled find another way to get home'...
Rather frisky down here on the Sussex coast!
some of the garden furniture etc re-arranged, but SO FAR [tempting providence] no real damage.
HB was a pain this morning on his walk, but he always does play up when the wind is blowing, I think he gets so many distant scents, certainly it is not a good idea to let him off lead when it is windy.
grandson has just arrived to stay for a couple of nights, buses running, but they seem to have used single deckers instead of the usual double deckers with the result that they are packed and large numbers standing.
I noticed the usual men sitting and women standing when the bus pulled away, but as I am at present on coffee NATO and jaffa cakes for two months, I will not make my usual comment re these ignorant males.
it certainly looks as though it has not been as bad as predicted here, but still the fencing guys will be busy for a while :D
stay safe, batten down the hatches, and I'm watching Bluestone 42 this evening on video, while SWMBO watches the dross on tv.
Wind hasn't been such a threat here, the River Dee was causing some concern earlier. The 17 second video was taken some 300 yards from my house, although the danger appears to have passed now. https://www.deeside.com/storm-eunice-updates-as-flintshire-braces-for-gale-force-winds-and-potential-flooding/ (https://www.deeside.com/storm-eunice-updates-as-flintshire-braces-for-gale-force-winds-and-potential-flooding/)
The Beeb have now revised their website to show 40-50mph winds through to about 05.00 now.
I realise it's like trying to predict when Farish will release something but I thought meteorologists were supposed to be professionals ::)
My local port Authority has a number of wind gauge sites; one has been consistently showing gusts of 50-60 knots and another has had gusts of up to 72 knots. This is despite the fact that pressure is now rising, and forecast was for wind moderation, though still strong.
I note our local ferry service is still running in both directions to the Hook of Holland and Rotterdam, but a bit slower than usual!

Luckily we have a very friendly neighbourhood. The house down the road is sharing their trampoline with our neighbours on the other side of us

Had to take my Mercedes Sprinter for service and MOT today an hour due East in Stony Stratford.
Not too bad going, managed to get the spinnaker up and save some fuel.
Had a courtesy car while it was in, (diesel Polo with 167k on the clock (don't ask!)), at one point I got overtaken by a bright red space-hopper. Makes a change from Beemers. It was pilotless I hasten to add.
Drive the Sprinter home was interesting. At a number of points I had to do some heavy 'tacking' to continue forward momentum.
Still trying to work out how on one section of road, straight at that, I managed to get blasted to one side, and as I wrestled it, got blasted the other direction. Scared the bejesus out of the numpty coming the other way who was obviously checking her phone as she travelled toward me. Didn't do my nerves much good either!

Mick, you are probably confusing the Air Ministry Meteorological Office, which in the 60's did daily 24hr, 5 day and 30 day forecasts, had RAF Hastings aircraft flying out into the Atlantic on met recce flights, and a number of weather ships on station out in the Atlantic, which both provided hourly data for plotting on maps for the forecasters, with Met Office PLC who apparently work in an office with no windows and just use satellite photos.
first job when I left school was in the AMMO, firstly at Lyneham, then at Bracknell, at that time the central forecasting office and hq.
I may be looking backwards through rose tinted glasses, but I remember them being far better than these days, but that might just be me.

Winds dropped here on coastal Norfolk.... From 74mph to 67mph.
We lost a roof tile during Dudley, which somehow didn't break on arrival on the ground.
Strongest I've been in was 126 mph, (1984) on Benbecula in the outer Hebrides.. the barrack block of 3 stories looked down on the met office that recorded that.
The steel framed barrack block was swaying in the wind, the water was sloshing in the toilets.

isn't that the ITV reporter who does the NHS reports, always looks as though she'e been doing the ton on a harley with no helmet :-[
And so the winds continue. 40-50mph with gusts to 70mph or so right through until at least Monday lunchtime. Personally, I'd brand it a winter storm but it seems no one can be arsbothered to give it a name. It's certainly not going to help those folks repairing damage from Eunice.

apparently now been named Franklin
My local rag has said the met office have christened it "Storm Franklin", with it's peak in my area between 3am and 7am Monday the 21st. 65knots allegedly.
our max forecast is gusts of 59 around 19:00.
seems we peak earlier in sussex
Bit late to the party on this one, but here is the weather report from Papyrus Towers, now that we've got our internet back:
Our power went off 1130 on Friday, but fortunately we have a gas hob, so at least we were able to have hot food. By late afternoon it was still off, and a neighbour had got hold of a website which was saying we wouldn't get it back till midnight. Bearing in mind the panic we had the last time we lost power (3 days!), we decided to prevail upon our son and daughter-in-law in Hove to let us put the contents of our freezer in their half-empty chest freezer. The power was eventually restored about 7pm, so yesterday morning I was all ready to go and get our frozen stuff back. For various reasons, I was unable to go until the afternoon, which was just as well as by that time the power was off again! Not quite so long this time, 5.5 hours, but long enough, although we heard that neighbouring villages were without power all night and the next day. I brought the food back this morning... and the lights went out again! Only for a short time this time, fortunately, but it's still blowing a hoolie out there. Not much physical damage around here, just a few branches off trees, but it's all been jolly exciting... One of the dogs is a bit out of sorts though - she finds bad weather worrying.
I'm getting too old for all this excitement.
Cheers,
Chris
Oh dear, Chris. I read your last sentence as "I'm getting too old for all this excrement" :-[
Still pretty windy around Manchester. I was feeling tired (too many late nights) and went for a lie down this evening, only to be kept awake by rattling and creaking. I was worried what it was until I eventually worked out that it was the guttering lifting in the high wind, scraping up its brackets and rattling within them. Even then it was too noisy to sleep. This could be a long night!
Prediction for Storm Franklin as at 04.45 this morning. Note the wind speeds are mean speeds, not just gusts.
Franklin seems windier here than Eunice, trees are all over the place.
My kids are off school today. Their bus didn't turn up and neither did the following one 15 minutes later, even though they waited over 3/4 of an hour. We can only assume that it is to do with the weather. Normally I'd come out of work and take them if that happened, but that takes well over an hour, then I may have to do it again at the end of the day (and they finish an hour apart), plus I've got a hospital visit this afternoon and there'd simply be hardly any of the working day left!

I can't roll my shirtsleeves down, as I'm wearing a tee-shirt. If I was going to the office today, I'd be wearing a short-sleeved office shirt - no jacket, no coat.
I can't stand cardigans or jumpers and I hardly ever put a coat on, unless it's throwing it down or I'm liable to be outside for a fairly long time, mid winter.
The only hat I possess is a red fedora.

I think the black arrow wind speeds on the BBC website are gusts, usually when they are predicted to be above about 35 or 40 mph.
Compare with wind speeds on the Met Office website for the same time.
I it take Tynesiders still don't need a coat...
My local port website gave highest gusts of around 50 knots on one remote site, around 58 kts on another.

About 25 years ago, ish, I used to do an awful lot of clay pigeon shooting. We're talking 3 out of 4 weekends at a local club. There was a good little group of 6-8 of us who went round together with all sorts of mickey taking and abuse and trying to put each other off. Whatever the weather, we were there. Including once when it was coming down like stair rods. It was that wet only about 30% of the clays would come out of the trap intact. If you had two 'No birds' in a row you had to tip your barrels down to empty the water out. We eventually quit half way through the round as we were the only club members out, there was a risk of doing costly water damage to the guns, and also the increasingly dangerous risk of water in the barrels causing too much pressure build up on cartridge detonation leading to bulging a barrel, splitting a barrel, breech bursts or other such things, which could potentially maim or kill.
Looking back through more mature eyes, we were crackers, verging on idiots.
