Title: Art in Railways
Post by: OffshoreAlan on November 26, 2021, 11:43:48 AM
I couldn't resist the temptation to post this topic as a counterpoint to "Railways in Art".

I remember the days when every railway passenger compartment had four (IIRC) framed pictures in it. Usually fairly bland scenic views of places that could be reached by rail.

I just happen to have 4 of them framed and on the wall in my lounge. Salvaged from a coach being scrapped at Wolverton works when my dad worked there :D
They were given to me unframed and, TBH, I'm not sure they were framed in the carriages either.

River Ouse - York
River Nidd - Knaresborough
Richmond - Yorkshire
Kings Lynn - Norfolk

:) You're just trying to confuse me, aren't you? (It's easily done these days.)

Perhaps "framed" was the wrong word, but they were under glass with a wooden beading surround fixed to the carriage wall IIRC.

I just remembered this picture which I took a few years ago on the IOW Heritage Steam Railway. Although it's First Class I'm sure they also appeared in Third (as it was then) Class.
