Title: Melbourne Cup 21
Post by: Bealman on November 02, 2021, 02:37:46 AM
Melbourne Cup day today. Just put me bets on.

Interestingly, out of a field of 23, only 4 horses are Australian!

7 from New Zealand, 5 Ireland, 4 UK, 1 USA, 1 Germany and 1 France.

Ah well, we'll see at three o'clock  ;)

Good job the nags aren't COVID-sensitive, otherwise you'd have a very small field!

My Lyft driver to the airport today was from Melbourne, we picked up each other's accent right away. Turns out he's quite an accomplished actor, his son too. He says ever since he's been acting he's always had a side hustle even though by all accounts he's done pretty well for himself. His kid played the little boy in "The Road" with Viggo Mortenson and Dad had a big role in "Sons of Anarchy".

He wasn't boastful at all about any of it, just matter-of-fact "that's my day job". Nice bloke. Most of the actors I've run into over the years here have been down-to-earth. A couple of exceptions, but let's not name names.

Well, if he had a bet on, I hope he did better than me  ;)

the one day of the year I bet, put something on every race on the card and gives us something to cheer or cry about for the day. Needless to say SWMBO backed the winner in the cup, I could only manage 2nd & 3rd. All up a great day spent with friends around the barbecue and some great Aussie red.

Sounds like a great day, especially after all the recent covid troubles.  :beers:

I have to admit that I'm not a racist.  But, it does seem to be another excuse to drink some red, not that an excuse is ever needed.

My prediction was that a horse would win, and so it turned out to be the case.

I'm like Graham... basically it's the only day of the year I bet on horses, unless I have a day at the races, but I haven't done that for a while now.

I've always considered a day at the races to be a great day out. When I was on the board of Bulli Workers Club we'd go to the races every year. Member's stand, the works. That made it an even better day out!

What I like about horse racing is that is one of the rare activities where all social classes can participate (as punters), from toffs to the working class.

It is also one of the rare sports where being small is an advantage  :)

Well, it's Spring racing carnival time again here in Oz. It doesn't matter which race it is, here in Oz, You Beauty always wins, and You Barstard* always comes second.  ;)

Hopefully I will get a "little beauty" in the Melbourne Cup, the one day of the year I have a bet.

Likewise.

Hope you're not affected by the wet, by the way, Graham. It certainly seems to be a bit of a mess down your way!

Luckily we are on top of a hill, so no problem at home with the floods, luckily we missed them and flew to Cairns last week back next weekend.
thanks for asking George.

what a day, hail and driving rain at my place, glad we stayed home this year. One consolation, I managed to back the winner. only win of the day though.

Never mind George.

Maybe you'll have more luck at the next running of the Blaydon Races ?

even wearing your jockey's cap in support.
Also lost my money, thought backing Saint George was a good idea.
