Title: Anyone seen this
Post by: lil chris on October 12, 2021, 10:07:58 AM
Has anyone seen this layout, apart from the train with 100 wagons the scenery looks really good. https://youtube.com/watch?v=S9Amv915T7w&feature=share

Very good, most impressive (especially coming hot on the heels of my recent post of a similar effort in 0 gauge https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=55079.0 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=55079.0) ).

Anything 0 can do, N can do better  :NGaugersRule:

I enjoyed this video, thank you for posting it.

I bet a Union Mills Model would have no problem .
And a few years ago Terry Henson visited and we had 140 mixed freight wagons going round behind our Garrets .Terrys had a Flieschman chassis with traction tyres  mine had two Farish Black Five chassis no traction tyres .

Check out the video on the James Street website of a Dapol 28xx hauling over 100 mineral wagons (116?) up a 1:100 gradient without fuss. It used to be a good audience grabber on Sunday afternoons but it became too difficult and disruptive to the rest of the layout as it was so long and took ages to make up and break down. No wonder Gresley and the LNER had problems with the long cola trains into London!

It's a lovely layout this, it's giving me lots of inspiration for my new one. It looks like a loop but I believe it's actually purely an out and back.

the owner is quite active on various N gauge groups on Facebook, I don't know if he posts here. He's got a lovely collection of kitbuilt/bashed locos too, some really unique rolling stock.

Thanks for this information @Capri_sam (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6236) , I would love to know more about the layout like a track plan for instance. It does look like a end to end, I think the branch loop goes to another terminus, so no run around.

To answer the thread:

@Bob Tidbury (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=3442)  - I tried one of my Union Mills locos, it wouldn't move the train at all.

@Capri_sam (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=6236)  - You're right it is an end to end, Fiddle Yard to terminus via a section of single line to create an operational 'bottle neck'. Thanks for your kind words.  :)

@lil chris (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=1784) - you asked for track plans, here they are in order if you were to drive the length of the layout;

I do have more videos showcasing the layout in the pipeline, including a layout tour, it's just finding time, sometimes video making can feel like a chore when I just want to run trains and relax, you know what I mean?

Thanks for this @Pedanticmongrel (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4310) i know what you mean about making videos they take time and skill, not sure I have either. I keep meaning to make at least one proper video of my layout, I could not do what a lot of these guys do ie what Stephen does on  Elvenholme, Simons Shed,Piccadilly etc. I love watching them though, I even watch one which is oo gauge, Chadwick but he is so entertaining, thanks again. Chris.

Charlie's a definite hoot!

There are a quite few N, OO and even HO gaugers out there who are prolific video creators, and they usually all have fantastic information available in their content.

I'd definitely also add Luke Towan to any list of you tube model makers.   Peter Lloyd-Lee does amazing rock faces and works so swiftly it's just impressive to see.

marklinofsweden is another one to look for and I like the kiwi at Station Road Model Railway, his approach to finding solutions on a budget aligns very well with me!

Ross.

Spot on there @RBTKraisee (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=8374) Charlie on Chadwick is brilliant. I have used a few of the techniques used by Marklinofsweden too, I have seen some of the videos of Luke Towan too very good. Perhaps if I did not watch has many YouTubers I would have time to make my own. Chris.

Pedanticmongral .
I find it amazing that a Union Mills loco wouldnr pull that train or is yours an older model,without traction tyres .

I suspect the Dapol 28xx having 8 driving wheels, perhaps marginally more weight than a union mills tender and the same number of traction tyres (2) is the reason why it could do more than a union mills loco could, for the record I tried a 9J (J11), it struggled to move the train then uncoupled itself due to the low slung couplers on UM models.  :-\

@Pedanticmongrel (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4310)

Greetings from Downunder.
Sorry for the off topic question, but I particularly like your Bollington Bug sitting in the storage siding. Love the teak finish.
Is it a Recreation21 3D print and can you share what chassis you used?

Thanks,
Mark

I was thrown by your 'Bollington Bug' name, that is beyond the period I chose for the model, having referred to the GCR period photos of it at MArylebone in the book 'LNER Reflections' by Nigel Harris. It is indeed a 3D printed body by Recreation21, the chassis used is a Tomytec TM-21 with the ends cut off to make it fit under the body.

Excellent. Thanks for the photo and chassis detail.
I have an interest in the GCR (and railcars), but my L3 (GCR 1B) is in post 1923 condition. I have kits for an A5, M1 and J63 to eventually build.
