Title: presflos
Post by: bluedepot on September 27, 2021, 09:17:31 PM
hi everyone

what era are these presflos suitable for?

they do seem to have tops codes under the weathering!

i know some similar looking ones ran up to the mid 80s - but i was a child then and don't remember the details / did not pay attention...

Are they really in short supply now, and collector's items? Eeek.

I bought this three pack when I went to the UK and pestered met up with Mick in 2014. I think I got them in a shop in Skipton.

Reading all this, I'm glad I did! I must admit, they are rather nice wagons. Here they are sitting in the goods yard at Kirkby Langadale on my layout.

There are different versions of the Presflo's, some have Bulk cement livery with no TOPS numbers, others have just Cement written on them with the TOPS numbers. There are also other variations with company names on them.

Just be aware that there was a version in the old Poole range that was much poorer in detail and accuracy than the more recent Bachmann designed model. The single "pozzolanic" model linked above is of the older version, and I'd avoid unless you are desperate for them and really can't find any of the newer version...

There were 20 twin-cone air-braked 40 tonne ferry tanks which were owned by STS/CAIB and operated for Tunnel Cement from the mid-1980s. These were based on the standard 2 axle continental design with the sides "flattened" to comply with the UK gauge. The underframes were second hand and dated from the mid-1960s. Paul Bartlett shows some on his site:-

https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/ferrystscement (https://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/ferrystscement)

A starting point for a model can be found in the continental N ranges where Arnold, and even old-style Lima, versions were available in N. This Arnold one is from the Osborn's website.

A Lima photo from Hattons site:-

The 'Prestwin' was the locally built twin silo hopper of which 130 were built by GRC&W in the early 1960s long before, and quite different to, the European versions mentioned above turned up on the scene. One can only dream that one day Revolution might choose this for one of their transition era models in N.

If it's Prestwins you're after then look no further than our own @maridunian (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2947) on his thread here https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=50051.0 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=50051.0) He's done a couple of the 20ton variants in 3d and are now available on Shapeways https://www.shapeways.com/product/NTAVRZRW7/2x-n-gauge-20t-prestwin-silos?optionId=166660380&li=user-profile (https://www.shapeways.com/product/NTAVRZRW7/2x-n-gauge-20t-prestwin-silos?optionId=166660380&li=user-profile)

Cheers

Neal.

The video took a while to load, so at first it appeared to be a static photo - I assumed it was of the Presflos that you'd sold!  :D

Presflos? I have (I think) 24. I have 12 Blue Circle ones and am always on the lookout for a few more to make up a block train, but they are getting harder to find. I think I am right in recalling that Bachmann said they would not do any more due to assembly cost making pricing too expensive?

I do now have three rather lovely RevolutioN Blue Circle Cemflos to add to the train though.
