Hi all
Thought I'd keep you updated on an acrylic painting I'm working on. Using reference photos I made in Germany last year.
(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/113/7020-290821092634.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=113201)
I always start by gridding out to help keep the underdrawing as accurate as possible. I'm working on a cream/ buff coloured gesso ground, this is preferable to working onto white, as colour tones can be judged better, the whole thing comes together faster and there's no white bits left showing through at the end.
While the train itself is painted quite formally, I can get a bit looser and painterly with the brushwork in foliage and track bed.
Bit of colour going in...

i like it! well done
tim
More work this morning.

The rails are quite a challenging part! Catenary wires will go back in once the sky is painted, I'll be using a long, thin rigger brush.
This is about the nearest equivalent I can manage :D

Brilliant Nick! :smiley-laughing: :laughabovepost:
Getting more developed. Things always slow down a lot around this point, as details become more of a focus.
A Köf II has 7 uprights in its radiator, something I never knew before!!! :D Actually there's quite a few bits and bobs on it I'd like to know more about, for example the canister near the front windscreen, above the 'bonnet'.

That's looking lovely. There is a Kof II near to me at Overton (formerly Ferry Meadows) station on the Nene Valley Railway. I don't think she has run for a while and is is rather faded DB Neurot with a couple of broken windows :'(

Interesting that there's a UK based Köf. I think it's been done up now, if you mean this one? https://www.flickr.com/photos/northumbria-rail/16695561247/ (https://www.flickr.com/photos/northumbria-rail/16695561247/)
A Köf-hauled intercity executive sleeper consist. I'm sure there's a few on this forum who could model that!!! :smiley-laughing:
Not 100% sure but I think the "cannister" is the air brake reservoir for locos which were upgraded with better braking and not just relying on the driver's brake pedal :)

That's the one - looks as though she gained DB markings at some point. The picture must be old as the sleeper now carries blue/grey. Here's some pictures from a few weeks ago.

This is one of two Kof II's in the UK, the other working at Eastleigh Works. They were formerly used on Channel Tunnel construction duties.
Thank you sir!

Bit more detailing, including around the front buffers. Also more work on the track bed and trees.

Cheers Nick, mystery solved then! Do Köf IIs come factory equiped with Brembo ceramic disc brakes, or is that only on the AMG versions? ;D
Nearly time for the overhead wires. I know it's a diesel so in theory no need, however I want to put them in!

Fantastic, Matt, well done. You're wasted on painting shipping containers ;D

Thank you! Now, paintings of shipping containers, there's an idea........ ;D
I've put the Köf painting away for a couple of days, so that I can look at it with fresh eyes again and make final tweaks.
Are you still considering adding overhead wires Matt?
If I was capable of creating such a great piece of artwork I think I would be happy as it was.

Thank you John!
Actually yes, they have gone in. I can't shy away from painting catenary, as it will be required for future electric loco paintings I do!

Now that I have seen the overhead wires added I'm relieved. They don't detract from the original subject at all. In fact, I think they add a bit of subtle interest to the sky. Lovely painting Matt.
Can we expect a Globibahn 2022 calendar for sale featuring your excellent paintings? :D :D

Thanks John, glad to hear that. I was aiming at making them as subtle as possible!

Cheers Nick. Crikey, 11 more paintings before Christmas - not quite sure if that is possible, but a good future idea! :D
In the words of Mrs Daffy:
"He's painted that?
Wow! Pretty impressive!"
She's right of course.
