Charlie Watts, Rolling Stones drummer. Legend.  :(

He was 80, and folks of that age seem to vanish all too frequently. The pic of his drum kit with a 'Closed' sign on it from Keith Richards did bring a tear to my eye.
In the 60s you tended to be in the Beatles or Stones camp and I was firmly in the former so only bothered with 'greatest hits' compilations of the Stones.
I love the fact Keith gave Charlie some advice many years ago to lay off the drugs :D

Watts was diagnosed with throat cancer when he was 60, had the therapy and got 20 years remission, so I guess he did alright, eh.

I must admit in my early years I was in the Beatles camp, however as I got older I really appreciated the Stones. Luckily I stumbled across a recording of 50yr anniversary concert in in Hyde Park a few year back and I guess I watch it about once a month. RIP Charlie, it wont be the same without you.

horses for courses. Charlie was the best drummer for the Stones, Ringo for the Beatles and The Who wasn't the same without Keith.
Micky Shrieve is also a fantastic drummer. Not forgetting Carl Palmer.

For sure, it's horses for courses as Malc says. I reckon many of us recall a much vaunted 'drum battle' between Buddy Rich and Ginger Baker (which I don't remember ever actually happening). Having seen both in action I'd say Buddy Rich has the edge.
Ringo was hugely underestimated IMHO, especially as he was a right handed drummer on a left handed drum kit (or vice versa, not sure which it was)
I would throw into the mix (over and above those mentioned by Malc) Phil Collins, Nick Mason, Alan White, Bill Ward, John Bonham, Ian Paice, Mick Fleetwood, Simon King and Michael Giles.
Have fun looking up those unknown to you :)
Horses for courses indeed.
A couple of friends and I often have discussions about best guitarist, vocalist (male and female), bass players, keyboards etc and it's very surprising some of the names trotted out.

Well I was in the Yes/Genesis Camp  :D

What a difference 10, or even 5 years makes, when it comes to music.

A sad loss, but he had a good run.

Some friends of ours saw them at Desert Trip in San Diego in 2016, along with Dylan, McCartney, Neil Young, The Who, & Roger Waters.

They said that Jagger announced it as the "Catch Em Before their Dead" Festival.

Regards,

John P

Well I only had to look up two of them, but the only participants in Hawkwind that I knew were Lemmy and Michael Moorcock.  :D

But you missed Bill Bruford from that list, really?

Humble apologies for the omission. I was racking my brain cell for his name when I should have just looked it up ::)

I was and still am a huge fan of both up to a point. Genesis went down the 'pop record' route after 'Then there were 3' to my mind, and the last Yes CD I bought was 'Talk'.
I still wonder if Jon Anderson knows what the heck he was singing about most of the time.

I saw the Stones here in LA at Staples Center about ten years ago - maybe longer. They played about a three-hour set and Charlie didn't let up the entire time. There was a short "intermission" in the middle where Keith played three or four of his own acoustic numbers. The rest of the band disappeared backstage for a breather, but Charlie kept going. (Most of the audience disappeared to the bars and concessions also, to be honest :))

I never managed to see Ginger Baker live, but I did see Buddy Rich and the energy he put into his act was stupendous. The closing bit of his act involved him playing two kettle drums with strobe lights inside. Every time he hit them there was a flash of light. Amazing.

I saw him with his tentet at Ronnie Scott's in 2004 - he really was an outstanding drummer - one of the very best along with Art Blakey, Tony Williams and Ginger Baker.
