Title: England Result
Post by: dannyboy on July 11, 2021, 10:59:31 PM
I have just put a post in the Angry thread - but who on earth teaches footballers how to take a penalty? Two ridiculous  :censored: penalties cost us the result!   :veryangry:

Still, a good tournament. England did a great job from Southgate at the top, all the way down. I only hope the fans are good losers on their way home and the press don't attack the pen missers on tomorrow's back pages.

Complimenti Italia!

Where to start with this........ Football came home then decided the weather was nicer in Italy and buggered off!

But in all fairness well done Italy!

There was a couple of incidents where the Italians got lucky with 2 potential red card offences, but as the saying goes you can only play what is in front of you and in normal play and extra time it was 2 teams going at it!

Then came the penalties, while Sanchos was poor I have to ask even as a Man Utd fan just what on earth was Rashford doing? He knew which way the keeper was going  even I knew it sat in my living and he still tried to be cute and just ended up messing it up! I think that is what cost us the shoot out, but you have to feel for Saka the lad is 19 been amazing all tournament and to volunteer to take one of the first 5 spot kicks well hats off to the young lad.

Not only has Saka really played well but the simple fact he volunteered says a lot about him and he really does have a great future ahead of him if he continues to develop.

While of course I am sad to be on the losing side I think performances by the team as a whole have been good although a few need to up their game Kane been one in particular, but Sterling and Shaw have been consistently brilliant, then there is Pickford while he has had a difficult season for club he just seems to find another level when it comes to playing for England, on another night has 2 penalty saves would have won it!

As you know I have posted in the angry thread about the game but just to repeat a couple of points here:
We have a young team who will only learn from this experience.
It's our best placing in a tournament for 55 years.

I'm not saying we'll win everything but we're in a far better place than we have been for decades. Good luck to them all.

Note: I agree regarding Rashford's penalty but also their keeper has a fantastic record of saving penalties even though he didn't have to save that one.
Note to ALL penalty takers from an ex-Sunday league goalkeeper (me): Hit it hard and on target. Those are the hardest penalties to save.

Hello all,

Being half Italian - and more used to cheering for Italy in the later stages of international tournaments - I had mixed feelings.

On balance though I'd have preferred England to shade it because they haven't won anything for over half a century while Italy do seem to win trophies on a fairly regular basis.

Having said that, with a semi-final in 2018, and a final now, England are on a good trajectory and I think they will learn from this.

I feel the real error last night was the manager's - for a variety of reasons I don't think bringing players on right at the end just to take penalties is a good move.  The players themselves are unlikely to have got their eye in, and it sends a message of jitteriness that I do not think is helpful.

cheers

Ben A.

Well I am happy , the team all did thier best and you cant ask for more ,
From the doctors ,physios trainers and my stepson Omar their chief they gave their all .
For such a young team they got a lot ferther than ever before so why all the hatred and racial comments ,If they had won the penalties then would they still have the abuse .
Now lets forget about football untill the World cup and concentrate on promoting the NGF Virtual  show .lets show What N gauge modelers can do .

I think England did extraordinarily well finishing as runners up. What I didn't like was how quickly some of the players took their medals off after the presentation.

It just seemed juvenile.

Whats left a bad taste in my mouth is the abuse that Rashford, Sako and Sancho have received because of their penalty shots.

Absolutely deplorable!  :(

I was only 6 years old. :P  It'd be another 13 years before I started taking any interest in football, by way of first discovering Arsenal. Of course as a loyal supporter I emerse myself in the club's history. So yes, that's a date of pain. Set me up well for living in Oxford for the past 3 decades, though - I can join my Yellows following mates in anti-Robins banter.  :D

I noticed that too. The only reasonable reason I could think of was that they wanted to keep them safe - maybe put in pocket, or hand to a coach.  :hmmm:  But yeah, why not wear them with pride?! Compare that scene with the Olympics and often bronze and Silver medalists grinning like the Chesire cat. It's as if (some/most) professional footballers have a sense of entitlement to win every match they play. I blame Jimmy Hill.

I knew your old stadium well, used to be a member of the L.F.C.A Used to meet up there the first Monday every month. Bob Wilson was the chairman back then.

Removing any medals other than gold in many sports has been happening for years. Here's one I found (https://nhl.nbcsports.com/2018/02/23/canadian-defenseman-sorry-for-removing-medal-during-ceremony/) from 2018 in Canada with a quick search. Of course as football is one of the most watched sports in the world you will see it more often. I think that basically these players play to win in a competitive sport and don't like coming second, they want to be first. It really doesn't worry me if they do remove them to be honest.
I just did another quick search and found that even rugby players who are usually lauded as holier than thou have removed medals (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/article-7644905/England-players-right-remove-Rugby-World-Cup-runners-medals.html) after finishing second

Oh and I don't think I had ever even heard of Swindon never mind Swindon Town at that point but again, it doesn't stop me...............

As a Swindon fan it feels special to beat anyone! But being 2 divisions below the Arse when beating them has to be extra special

I think penalties is a terrible way to decide a result, why can't these matches go to a replay as they did years ago, I remember in the 1970's Chelsea V Leeds in the FA cup final, it was a draw after extra time at Wembley so they had a replay at Man U the following week when Chelsea won, far better than penalties, the other thing they could do is after extra time has been played go to another period of play and the first team to score wins and the match ends there.

Today a football match is a TV event and TV companies like their events to start/end at predicted times.

Yeah - but BBC didn't show it until 23.15hrs.
It's not Andy's fault I won't pay Sky a penny for their offerings but just think about folks like me before broadcasting the result please. Apart from that, with the thread all about footie () I was just surprised to see the cricket result.
