Title: New layout information
Post by: NJB on July 08, 2021, 09:23:37 PM
I have just bought an N gauge layout which measures 12'x3' and once I get it up and running it should be very enjoyable to operate for me and my grandsons who love trains. I asked the seller when he built it, but he replied that he bought it 20 years ago.
When I dismantled the layout the name 'Mardale' was written on the trestles.
I did the usual searches and discovered that Mardale was a village in the north of England which was flooded when a new reservoir was formed, but had no connection with railways.
My reason for coming on the forum is to ask if anyone has any information about the origins of the layout and if it ever appeared on the exhibition circuit , please?
Thanks,
Nigel

Hi there,

I don't recognise the name myself, but it is not unknown for layout builders to reuse trestles etc, so it may be that the layout you have is a successor to the original 'Mardale.'

I think posting some photographs will be more likely to spark recognition if the layout has been featured in a magazine or at shows in the past.

cheers

Ben A.

I seem to remember Chelmsford MRC having a layout called Mardale back in the 80's. Double track main line, two passenger loops in the station and a small goods yard on the inside. Does that seem to fit?

Thanks very much for the replies. I will post some pictures, having finally got the layout together this afternoon. It does seem like the description Dave has given.
Now to get it running.....
Happy modelling,
Nigel
