Title: Yet another telephone scam!
Post by: TrevL on May 06, 2021, 10:27:00 AM
Apparently, the National Crime Agency are going to suspend my national insurance number because it has been detected I am involved in criminal activity, press 1 to speak to the investigator.    :D :D :D :D

Yeah right!  The number that rang was 07891 961397 (probably false).

Keep sharp folks!

Hi
if I get any of these calls recorded on my answerphone, I always add the number and the details to https://who-called.co.uk/
There's a list of numbers there you can check to see if anyone else has had trouble with - it might be our only way to fight back.. :(

The trouble is that with number spoofing, they can appear to be a new, random number on every call.

I have had dozens of these over the past few months and each one says that then have detected suspicious activity on the Western border of Wales. By my reckoning that is the border with Eire half way across the Irish sea. Would be interesting to know what is going on there. Just how can you compromise your Natioasl Insurance Number? It's not as if you use it on a daily basis for some financial transaction so, unless someone has secretly got access to my pension, it must be a scam. So long as my pension doesn't stop appearing in my bank account every four weeks I feel secure. I block the number every time and it has gone quiet of late so I assume they have now run out of mobile phone numbers.

The scammers must be working on the assumption that a UK NI number is used in a similar fashion to a US Social Security number.

Over here, your Social is used by every man and his dog to verify identity, for loans, mortgages, voting, tax returns, insurance, etc, etc, etc.

I get a call about once every two days to tell me that my Social Security Number has been "suspended" due to "suspicious activity". I'd really like to call them back one day, but I really don't have the patience.

Apparently, my vehicle warranty "benefits" are also under review due to non-renewal.
