Just got back from the weekly shop with a significantly lighter wallet.
Went to Coles where the blueberries were $7 for 125g ($6 last week), so I thought, nah.
Went to Aldi where the non-existent blueberries were $6.50
Went to Woolworths and took a 125g punnet to the checkout only to be told they were $8.90 because they were organic. Reversed the trolley back to the fruit section where I had to settle for a punnet at $7.50.
SWMBO has the blueberries, I like raspberries.
I shouldn't whinge, it is such a blessing to have so much available all the time.
That's a coincidence... I just got back from Coles that minute, but my wallet is significantly lighter than yours!
a blast from the past - Woolworths
uneven wooden floors, and pick-and-mix :food:
for some reason that train of thought led me to memories of listening to 45s in a booth, but for the life of me can't remember if that was Woolies, or Smiths ?
Woolworths - Airfix kits and packets of postage stamps for my collection.
Is the Australian Woolworths posh like South African Woolworths ?
Wish we still had Woolworths - a most useful shop staffed by people who never quite knew what was going on. Wish we still had Maplins, too.
The old truism of "Use it or lose it" comes to mind.
Blueberries (tasteless to me) are touted as a superfood. Just as I decided to give them a try, our local supermarket went out of stock.
I see self-proclaimed nutritional experts touting the merits of blueberries, but are they meaningfully more "super" than say raspberries, which actually taste delicious?
I'm always cynical of the superfood label. I believe blueberries are high in antioxidants, but whether they're materially better than any other Berry I don't know. My son loves them, so we buy them, along with a variety of other berries. I do like blueberries, but agree there are nicer berries out there! Dunno what we pay for them though, £2 a punnet maybe.
My wife has blueberries as part of her normal breakfast. They seem to be sourced from all over the world-North Africa, South America, as well as Europe and probably elsewhere.
Woolworths= Pick'n'mix, Airfix models and Playcraft model railways though these were actually scaled HO for British prototypes.
Martyn
We have Blueberries for breakfast with a dollop of Greek yougart. We get both from Sainsburys

Woolworths= Pick'n'mix
Made by Ashbury Confectionery in Corby (Now Baronie Chocolates)
One of my favourite customers to visit :) :foodanddrink:
But I digress from blueberries........
"Playcraft model railways"
I'd forgotten them, were they not made by Jouef ?

I did use Maplins, a lot. And Radio Shack too. Too much stuff is designed to be non user-serviceable these days, so nobody learns to tinker anymore. We were greener than we knew in days of yore.

I've seldom had a blueberry that tasted of anything other than grass or wood. MBH loves a blueberry, but concedes they can be very variable in strength of flavour. T'other day I bought a packet for no other reason than they were as big as golf balls which amused me. Nearly every single one that MBH ate was followed by exultations of the wonderful taste! Every single one I had was a woody tasting duffer. :'(
There's obviously no accounting for taste....... buds. :D
Wife loves em, I think they're highly overrated. Raspberries for me.
Well, we're a a major producer of blueberries here (planted three new bushes in the garden yesterday as it happens), they're a staple pretty much and when in season are cheap as chips, have them for breakfast a few times a week and make muffins out of them probably weekly. If they taste of dirt, then your blueberrying wrong!. As for superfood, don't know, but they are good for you like any berry or fruit.
Speaking of Woolies, my first job was as a Saturday boy in the Woolworths in Caerphilly, If I was lucky I would be allowed to work the record bar late on Saturday afternoon and put on Zeppelin instead of the easy listening rubbish that the more .. er mature staff members would put on the rest of the day :)

No. It is a supermarket that competes in the Coles/Aldi/WW/IGA battle. Nothing like the David Jones, Harrods etc.
I normally shop Coles first, because of the gluten free range for SWMBO, but our local Woolworths does a very nice cooked bbq roast chicken or pork that we have every other week. $10 a chicken, $20 a pork loin. I bbq a lot, so it's Coles lamb rump, Aldi eye fillet and scotch fillet beef and a 4 pack of salmon from Aldi or Coles most weeks.
As our PM say, "How good is Australia"
We had the eye fillet tonight. Yummo.
In terms of blueberries, I think raspberries and strawberries are better....and portobello mushrooms and grilled capsicums and ... you get the drift!
Here in Texas, the stores are full of blueberries. Yeah nothing special - like a bilberry but with less flavour.
I do miss blackcurrants though, and I think the locals think I'm making up stories of red currants and white currants.
One of the few seasonal crops still present here, we do get some nice fresh grapefruits in late winter that are grown in the south of the State (alas February's Big Freeze means we might be short for the coming year).
As for Super Foods - yes it is all marketing: notice how they are always non-local crops that usually aren't that common. You want fruit full of antioxidants? Blackcurrants are a good start! Also pretty much any citrus.
As for grains, it is hard to beat good old barley for nutritional value - but barley isn't viewed as "exotic".
get thee behind me, Satan...
Grapefruit :food:
but not allowed them because I'm on statins, and apparently I'll die if I eat grapefruit [with sugar and a cherry on the top mmmmmmmmmmmm] or even drink grapefruit juice.
I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't be better off eating / drinking them / their juice, binning the statins and taking my chances.

"Playcraft model railways"
I'd forgotten them, were they not made by Jouef ?
Yes, they were. Some locos were British outline, but I think a small diesel shunter was French. Coaches were BR Mk1s; some wagons were British, but again, I think some were at least French inspired.
They also offered an SNCF Pacific towards the end of the range period.
Martyn
my first proper layout was Jouef, comparing the detail against the price against the bricks / price supplied by Hornby and Triang was a no brainer.
so SNCF locos and carriages etc, at much less than equivalent Hornby / Triang, much superior detail, though no exploding box cars :-[
all disposed of prior to my joining up, and my next layout, after demob, again went for quality / price, and started my HO US empire, Bachmann and Athearn, finally to be replaced by the true scale, N, many years ago.
I wonder what those Jouef models would be worth now :'( :'(

Likewise. I used to love ½ a grapefruit for beakfast but since 1993 have been on statins with a strict warning from the medicos that grapefruit totally negates any benefits from the statins :(
anybody remember Kitmaster ?

I don't know statins specifically (and I'm not a doctor...) but I thought the general issue with grapefruit and a lot of drugs was that they contain an enzyme which causes the drug to be absorbed more effectively. Ie. you could easily have the effects of an overdose. Of course you could take less of the drug (and the drug companies lose out!) but the effect varies from person to person so difficult to calculate safely. Easier to say "no grapefruit".

As Platy says, it's just a supermarket, but it's definitely posher than the Woolworths I grew up with in my hometown in the NE of England.
They haven't got Playcraft trains, though!

I wonder.....I have a badly repainted mk1 still, possibly another WR mk1, but I'm not sure if I still have some wagons in the loft with my OO stock.
I had a clockwork and electric USA tanks, a cl22 BoBo, a 4-wheeled diesel shunter, four coaches and about ten wagons, plus some accessories.
Their disposal is now rather hazy.......
I wonder what would have happened if Lima issued their HO British range whilst Playcraft was still available? Would it have lead to British HO being the majority scale instead of OO? And Fleischmann also had a very small UK range (Warship, + Bullied coaches?).
