This has been mentioned in the latest F1 news thread but such was the legend of the man I feel he deserves his own one.
I have such fond memories watching F1 in my youth with him commentating and playing the official F1 97 game which included his voice.
I think it's fair to say I would not have watched the sport for as long as I did without him.
RIP sir

The voice of Formula 1. RIP.
Sadly gone, but never to be forgotten. His partnership with Hunt the Shunt was one of the highlights of my F1 memories, that and his constant large chicken ups with Hunt and Brundle
Sad loss. And his distinctive voice and knowledge of the sport plus quotes we will not forget
"The lead car is unique, except for the one behind it which is identical."
RIP Mr Formula 1.
"Unless I'm very much mistaken ...... I am very much mistaken"
;D
Great discussion on Radio 5 Live now about the great man.
I will stop the start watch now...
Highly recommend his autobiography a really fascinating career even before F1 - His double act with James Hunt was perfect F1 commentary yet to be bettered.

A bit before my time (mainly remember him with Martin Bundle), but some of the clips shown in a tribute video on the F1 YouTube channel were very good / amusing....
Not ashamed to say that some of the moments (that I recall seeing live) brought a tear to my eye.

Hopefully they will repeat Life in the Fast Lane on the BBC at some point, in the meantime it is on You Tube...
I think the best comment so far is the tweet from Button which ends with 'I've got to stop, Ive got a lump in my throat'
For those not in the know, he is quoting Murray from 1996 when Damon became World Champion.
He will sorely missed, the voice of motorsport for many years.
Best wishes
A sad Simon

BBC1, Tuesday 22:45, according to the announcer during rugby half-time.
Yes RIP the voice of F1 in the UK for so many years.
and also a GENTLEMAN in the truest meaning of the word.
"I have no idea what Eddie Irvine's orders are, but he's following them superlatively well".
(I hope I got the driver's name right, but that's what I remember him saying).
Also
"Prost is exactly as far ahead of Senna as Senna is behind Prost".
And finally the finger-jab in Nigel Mansell's forehead after Mansell had walked into a trailer leaving a huge lump on his head.
"Is this where you hit your head, Nigel"?
"Owwwwww"!

Can anybody confirm this please? My on screen programme guide is not showing it.
Not on BBC1 Wales either using Sky. Just checked BBC1 NI (Ch 953), not there either.
Not on the BBC North West EPG either, nor is it showing on their listings page :hmmm:
The announcer said about it during the rugby halftime break, that's all I know.

Yes Tuesday evening!
Actually it is available on iPlayer now and for the next few weeks.
It shows up on Sky Q as I've just set it to tape record
RIP to the voice of F1
