Hi looking for any recommendations for automatic wire strippers for model rail size wire thanks in advance
I have a pair of these. They have no trouble stripping 7/.02 droppers upto domestic size 2.5mm conductors. Wouldn't be without them.
Screwfix item 97204 C.K. wire stripper.
(Sorry, for some reason it won't let me put a direct link)
Many thanks

I use a similar product branded Sealey - does a great job.
will these be ok for very thin decoder or led wires?
or is there something better for very thin wires?
cheers
tim
I got these from B & Q
Main thing is to make sure they're adjustable with a decent thickness range.

an old pair of nail cutters work well for small wires - you can put a notch in them by practising on a piece of point solenoid wire!
I've had a number of wire strippers, but always end up just using a pair of side cutters or small pliers and going by 'feel'
Works for me! :uneasy:
DCC Concepts sell this style specifically for decoder wiring:
https://www.dccconcepts.com/product/fine-wire-strippers-pre-settable/ (https://www.dccconcepts.com/product/fine-wire-strippers-pre-settable/)
Why is DCC wire different from DC wire? :confused2:
It isn't. But DCC decoder wire - typically 32 gauge/0.2mm - is too fine for most wire strippers.
Go by feel ;)
@Derekm (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=8893) I use these at work and in the shed https://www.rapidonline.com/Weicon-51000005-Professional-Wire-Stripper-No-5-86-0320?IncVat=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces&utm_campaign=shopping%20feed&utm_content=surfaces%20across%20google&pdg=pla-301834852710:kwd-301834852710:cmp-757438067:adg-44804851896:crv-207912323492:pid-86-0320:dev-c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyp6Kh6TI7gIVCb_tCh1qyArTEAQYAiABEgIrI_D_BwE (https://www.rapidonline.com/Weicon-51000005-Professional-Wire-Stripper-No-5-86-0320?IncVat=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=surfaces&utm_campaign=shopping%20feed&utm_content=surfaces%20across%20google&pdg=pla-301834852710:kwd-301834852710:cmp-757438067:adg-44804851896:crv-207912323492:pid-86-0320:dev-c&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyp6Kh6TI7gIVCb_tCh1qyArTEAQYAiABEgIrI_D_BwE)
My work set is 6 years old and never mssed a beat
I just use a generic auto stripper for most wires
For the super thin decoder wires I use the one sold by DccConcepts, a bit pricy because they use the super rare blue for the handles :) I am sure similar and much cheaper are available from the usual suppliers of such things

I have various types of wire strippers, but find the DCC Concepts ones the best for fine wires. With the screw adjuster set correctly every wire of the same size will strip the same with no faffing about.
Geoff
I've used this style previously, but not for railway modelling work
C&K 0.3mm to 1.0mm
https://cktools-superstore.co.uk/CK-Precision-Wire-Stripper-for-025-to-100mm-Diameter-Wires-330011
...and the 30013 is 0.25mm to 0.8mm.
I have various types of wire stripper, from the simple side cutter types through screw adjustable ones to complex automatic ones, but to be honest I find I just use the cutter part of my favourite snipe nose pliers and do it by feel (usually already got those pliers in my hand anyway), or for very fine decoder and LED wire the good old Mk I front teeth do the job brilliantly :D The screw-adjustable ones may come out if I'm stripping a whole bunch of multi-core to solder up a D-sub connector.

That's all very well if you have teeth :)
I use an older version of these at work and at home.

I use these (https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/wire-strippers/0613044/), had them for 30+ years. There are cheap copies out there in other colours but they're not a patch on the RS originals.

Pink Floyd's brick in the wall video modified to look like a T Rex! ;D
Actually, search 'wire strippers' using the forum search function, and there's heaps of stuff, dating back almost to the start of the forum.
