Title: OK, I'm in nit picking mode
Post by: guest311 on August 27, 2020, 03:12:32 PM
received today from Liverpool my latest RAFP model, this time
https://www.hattons.co.uk/492811/oxford_diecast_76lr2s007_land_rover_series_ii_swb_canvas_raf_police/stockdetail.aspx (https://www.hattons.co.uk/492811/oxford_diecast_76lr2s007_land_rover_series_ii_swb_canvas_raf_police/stockdetail.aspx)

which has followed this
https://www.hattons.co.uk/465986/oxford_diecast_76lrl007_land_rover_lightweight_canvas_raf_police/stockdetail.aspx (https://www.hattons.co.uk/465986/oxford_diecast_76lrl007_land_rover_lightweight_canvas_raf_police/stockdetail.aspx)

and in due course will be joined by
https://www.hattons.co.uk/394353/oxford_diecast_76vw031_volkswagen_vw_van_raf_police/stockdetail.aspx (https://www.hattons.co.uk/394353/oxford_diecast_76vw031_volkswagen_vw_van_raf_police/stockdetail.aspx)

and probably
https://www.hattons.co.uk/519515/oxford_diecast_76lrl010_land_rover_lightweight_raf_police_akrotiri/stockdetail.aspx (https://www.hattons.co.uk/519515/oxford_diecast_76lrl010_land_rover_lightweight_raf_police_akrotiri/stockdetail.aspx)

though why the first and last are listed in public service vehicles and not military ground vehicles does baffle me  :-[

anyway, what baffles me also is why Oxford Diecast can put the correct RAF POLICE plate on the lightweight, ie black stripe above red stripe with black lettering above black stripe, but on the one received today have just put the black lettering on a red plate  :'(

also, from my memories of Ballykelly, we also had the plate on the rear, as well as a blue beacon on the roof, ? metal plate welded to tilt frame, then beacon added ?, which is shown on the Akrotiri version.

am I expecting too much for my hard earned cash ?

I guess because they are only a fiver(ish) each, and what can you get for a fiver these days?

Do you remember when Dapol forgot to paint the buffer beams on their first BR terriers? or forgot to put the yellow warning panel on D1000, or used over-bright lining on their mixed traffic steam locos, or the wrong colour route availability markings on their GWR 4-6-0s?

The HST-P purchasers are now complaining about the positioning of the transfers on each coach being wrong, and at £300 for the complete coach pack, I guess it puts £25 of (otherwise very nice) RAF Police vehicles with simplified badging into context.

Hmmmm... all these are Dapol grumbles....wonder of there is a pattern emerging :)

Keep smiling
Bob

you make a good point, so a set of these
http://www.kingfisherminiatures.co.uk/raf-police-vehicle-markings-i130.htm (http://www.kingfisherminiatures.co.uk/raf-police-vehicle-markings-i130.htm)
ordered, and I can apply them over the wrong markings.

had to have at least one of these on the shelf, as I remember driving these when I was in NI in the late 60s.
just need now to source a blue beacon to go on top ...

:hmmm:
one of these
https://www.hattons.co.uk/151368/oxford_diecast_76mar005_morris_marina_heathrow_fire_service/stockdetail.aspx (https://www.hattons.co.uk/151368/oxford_diecast_76mar005_morris_marina_heathrow_fire_service/stockdetail.aspx)
will give me x2 blue and x1 amber beacons, the vehicle can then be striped and repainted, turned upside down, surrounded by debris on a base, and become a wrecked vehicle after a riot

sorted.

Re Dapol getting their colours wrong, I do find it odd that no one mentions just how wrong the cream colour is they use on the Crimson & Cream stock, on the Autocoaches I have it's almost orange.  Is it because of the anything is better than nothing mentality we often see attached to complaints about Dapol.

Poole Farish blood & custard coaches came in all sorts of shades in the nineties. I've got photos on here to back that up, but being on me phone right now, can't be bothered looking for 'em.

I was just happy to have a whole train of them back then.

True but my Dapol stock are current models you would think with all the resurch done in resent years by  model makers and paint suppliers that would get something basic like cream correct, the autocoaches look like they have been tangoed, or they did, I had to repaint them something less orange from the Railmatch range.

It's not even consistent across their own range, if you line up all their crimson and cream stock their cream is all over the spectrum.

Still shouldn't complain it's better than nothing 😉

They still do! I've got a rake of mk1s (all the recent releases) and there's a huge variation in the shades of red. No idea if it's prototypical, it's my steam charter rake, and well out of my area of expertise!

There are so many livery errors on virtually all models we'd be here all day pointing them out. Ironically I like some of them - FGW mk3 coaches have blue roofs, but they look black in service because the wash plants create a defined line at the edge of the roof, it looks intentional! Dapol painted them black, which IMO looks better than the 'clean' blue.

Sometimes they change correct colours for wildly wrong ones - early GBRF 66s were the right colour, the last ones have been totally wrong.

The crimson on some of mine is maroon.... in fact I get the impression it's the same paint for their full maroon BR coaches.

Even the blue grey era modellers find the oddcahade issues in have. The CK coach grey is a tad white compared to the Restaurant Car which is carrying a dark deep blue and a darker grey. Could it be the moulding ,  plastics ?

Those two look like two different brands, the one on the right being Farish, the one on the left Minitrix or even Lima.

Correct George. The restaurant car is farish the CK is Lima, the shaded just drew me to this discussion. One can clearly see the shades in the plum / custard and maroon shades if you know what I mean in the reds.

Yes, it does look like that in the crappy photo. Could be the lighting, but it has an M for Midland on the side!

On the right is what I'd call crimson & cream while the left one I'd call blood & custard (I've also heard it referred to as plum & custard)

On the left, Farish blood & custard - on the right, Farish Thompson

The Saphos take on it

I was not keen on my old Farish crimson & cream stuff so sold it all. The worst, IMHO, are the Dapol Collett crimson & cream as they're blindingly bright but maybe that was correct

Well that is blindly bright in that last photo, but they're ain't Mk1s, are they  ;)

They are Pullman coaches and as they are private owners, they can paint them whatever colours they like.

Hey coat door  :sorrysign:
The cream is fine, the CRIMSON was orangey... but the crimson was notoriously bad for weathering, and did go towards orange. Dapol's colour is certainly wrong for 'ex-works' condition, but about right for a coach that's been stood outside and not painted in a decade!

Unfortunatly I no longer have or can find the pictures I took before the repaint Cream but my 2 Autocoaches were very much on the Orange side of things.

Has anyone compared Farish/Dapol crimson & cream with Railmatch Crimson & Cream ?
