Title: any ex-RAF Hawk T.Mk.1A plumbers on here ?
Post by: guest311 on June 13, 2020, 01:31:26 PM
just received two of Airfix's 1:72  :-X Hawk kits, T.MK.1A, which can have ventral gun pack fitted, together with two underwing pylons, with drop tanks and Sidewinders provided as alternative loads.

looking to use mine as ground attack in the wargames campaign, so what other weapons loads were they cleared for?

I was thinking along the lines of SNEB or bombs, but any info much appreciated.

thanks in advance
alan

second question ...

when flown as ground attack, would the crew still be two, or just pilot ?

https://abpic.co.uk/pictures/search/30/?q=Hawk+t1a&f=type&exact=1&type=Hawk+t1&registration=&operator=Royal+air+force&code_number=&construction_number=&airport=Farnborough&country=&photographer=&date_taken=&airshow=&military_unit=&information=&exact=1&search_type=advanced.  A picture of a Hawk T1 with ordinance layed around at Farnborough in 1976 on the Air Britain abpic website might help

Ex Plumber here, but harriers not hawks.

IIRC, if flown in a 'war situation' the Hawks would be flown by a single pilot, not needing a Nav.

Twin seat Harriers were the same, being wired for all cleared weapons despite being training aircraft.

I'll do some digging on stores.

So not sure what years you are thinking but I can tell you what the script was when I was a student at JFACSU at RAF Leeming!

For our training we used the Hawks a lot for us to practice our basic skills before we had playtime (That is what they actually call it!) with the air frames and crews we would be working with in Helmand.

So the "students" (use that term loosely as these pilots had passed the course at RAF Valley and waiting orders to join their squadron for type training) were were working with were for Harrier and Typhoon squadrons (not sure if that would make a difference), but they flew single manned acting as the flight lead with an instructor as wingman.
When were a little further into our training and trusted to call in ordnance they used the 30mm Cannon and a number of 3kg training bombs (I wouldn't have trusted me calling in a real 500lb bomb at that stage of training either!).
They were on occasion also equipped with a reconnaissance pod rather than centre line gun, but don't ask me which one as we never used it as it wasn't down linking to our terminals.
