Title: Shunting plank suggestions.
Post by: emjaybee on June 07, 2020, 11:56:46 AM
I could do with some suggestions please.

My father turned 84 today, and with lock down etcetera, I've been struggling to organise him a present.

Talking to him yesterday, he said he was thinking of opening up the model railway and having a tinker but he was worried about his back.

To give you the full picture: In 1973, he built an extension to the family home, in it he built cupboards down one side with a platform on the top for a model railway. It's 16ft long x 3ft wide. You can't get your legs under it because of the cupboards. So any work involves leaning over it. A couple of years ago he declared he'd done all he could to it, short of tearing it up and starting again. He has a bad back, which isn't going to improve, but it's manageable.

I'd like to build him a shunting plank, that can sit on a table for him to work on.

Now, he's OO. I think N would be too much, plus he's got plenty of stock including a Sentinel which is just begging for a shunting layout.

I'd like suggestions for a track plan, I'm thinking, 18"/24" x 48". Nothing to big to handle and move around.

Thanks Chris, I was hoping that someone had some experience of one rather than links.

Haven't done it myself, but this german post ( https://stummiforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=179682 ) shows with lots of pics a H0 (should be 00, isn't it?) on a 150x50cm board. Maybe fits your requirements. Pictures show that it is possible...
