Hi all,
Does anyone happen to know what colour I would need for BR coal and mineral wagons (grey)? I have a load of Peco kitchen which require painting (via airbrush). Preferably acrylic for thE Matte Look!
Thanks
Try https://images.app.goo.gl/bsHywSpxzJsTDzMN8 and scroll left column for period being modelled (http://fox-transfers.co.uk/paint)
Our big layout is 1959-63 late SR steam and we have over 120 16T mineral wagons in grey. Lots are peco kits as well as RTR.
The Railmatch Early Freight Grey has a very slight green hue to it but when I have asked about various colours the educated souls on here have all told me that no 2 BR works painted anything the exact same colour so variation is very common.
The last few I painted were just grey rattle can primer varnished and decalled before weathering. No one told me they looked the wrong colour.
I just use Halfords grey acrylic primer in a rattle can.
Another vote for Halford Grey primer. It's a good match for the shade of grey Farish use, covers well, gives a matt finish and is good value for money.
The only draw-back with using a matt paint is that you may struggle to get transfers to stick properly. Generally they need a gloss finish for best results.

Hi both,
Is this the product? https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/primer/halfords-bodyshop-primer-grey-500ml-709143.html (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/primer/halfords-bodyshop-primer-grey-500ml-709143.html)
This is the Halfords primer I've always used: https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/primer/halfords-primer-grey-500ml-473116.html (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-and-body-repair/primer/halfords-primer-grey-500ml-473116.html)
@NOE 544R (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=4158) It's the one that @thebrighton (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=943) has listed.
As regards decals, I generally:
Primer,
Gloss,
Decals,
Satin.
That said, it is possible to do decals straight onto matt primer, but...
...I ALWAYS test my paint, decal, varnish combination on a piece of scrap material. Only once did I not bother and it was carnage.
I always use Halford's grey PLASTIC primer for BR wagon grey.
Thin coat of Johnson's Klear, add transfers, then covering coat of Klear, then if needed, Testor's Dullkote for finish.
They also do plastic primer in red or white; red a good base for maroon, white for any light colours. been using these for over fifteen years (I think) with never a problem.
They are also good for covering metals such as brass or whitemetal and spray commendably thinly.

Am I missing some subtlety in the question? Surely the "
Railmatch Paint for BR coal and mineral wagons (grey) Preferably acrylic" is Railmatch Freight Stock Grey Acrylic??

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies. I've gone for the Halfords paint and will report back on how it is. Having looked online the colour seems fairly good.

Having read online and looked at samples, the colour appears to be off (and a little on the greenside too). Hence the thread!
Thanks
Don't get too worried about finding an exact match, especially for a grey mineral wagon. After a few years of use and weather two wagons that followed each other out of the paint shop could be in very different conditions.

Railmatch BR Early Freight Grey is the best match I've found to the Farish version of it, so it's a good place to start.
Thought i'd add my feedback incase anyone is looking into this also. The following pics were taken 5 minutes ago (im halfway through finally)! I have to say, in my opinion, the halfords paint has worked a treat and looks a good colour! Pics below

I think to vary my wagons up a little, it's probably worth me paining future ones in bauxite brown. I'm really enjoying the Halfords paint via the can. Is there a similar product for the bauxite?

Halfords red oxide primer is just as useful.

Hi all,
Agreed with both the red and grey Halfords primer for plastic.
I spray a light coat of red first then grey on top. I leave a slight breakthrough of the red to represent rust. Then an overall wash of black. Then Klear gloss before decals, followed by Windsor and Newton non yellowing Matt coat.
For metal kits I use Halfords Etch Primer first, then same process as above.
Thanks

See my reply #8.
The red plastic primer is a good base for bauxite as well as maroon.
As I said, I find the plastic primers are also good on metal (and resin).

I use Simonz grey, oxide, white and yellow primer spray cans. Cheap as chips and lasts years.
If you weather your wagons nobody will notice anyway!
Thanks for the comments all, it's been a real help. For those who used the Halfords grey primer, have you had issues with Fox Transfers? For some reason, they will not stick and begin to lift once dabbed dry. Am I doing this right?
On a matt surface, waterslide decals don't adhere well and are prone to silvering. I suggest applying a gloss varnish patch on the areas where transfers are to be applied. Decalcote or similar helps the transfers to bond and to shrink around surface detail. Then cover over with a matt varnish. Once weathered you won't see the join.
As with all transfers they work best on a glossy surface, a coat of Johnsons Klear or gloss varnish will do the trick. Also once applied a coat of Micro Sol before varnishing to seal them will also help bed them down nicely.
