Title: brake vans with nem coupling pockets
Post by: bluedepot on April 13, 2020, 08:24:10 PM
hi

apart from the queen mary brake van, do any others have nem coupling pockets?

im just checking about this before i cut off the coupling boxes on some old brake vans and buy some dapol conversion nem coupling boxes to glue in their place. i dont really want to carry out surgery unless necessary!

cheers

Only one I can think of is the Farish Midland type 20 ton...

never understood why Bachmann/Farish used NEM box's when they had their own , fitted to USA outline stock , using EZ knuckle couples and supplying Rapido's to fit/convert  yourself . and free/sprung  moving for tight track .

ok thanks for the replies!

it would be good if they updayed the 20 ton and toad

i think i'll carry out some surgery on my old ones as i would like to be able to use dapol magnetic couplings

The GWR Toad brake van has NEM pockets, at least the Bachmann made ones do.

To be clear, that's the new tooled Bachmann GW Toad not the older one from the original Farish range that Bachmann produced initially.

Apart from that, as has already been mentioned the LMS 20T one, but also the SR Pillbox Brake van too. I don't know about the little ex-MR one.

Of the current range, it's only the former LNER /BR standard type that doesn't have NEMS. As Mr Bachmann points out, the rapidos are easily replaced by American Bachmann buckeyes (available from retailers of USA trains. ) I've used the Dapol conversion kits on one end only, in order to fit a magnetic coupler.

thanks!  i didnt even realise there was a new toad, let alone one with nem couplings. obvs not been paying attention!

anyway my plan is to buy a toad and also use dapol conversion on a 20 ton brake van, so that should be enough for magnetic uncoupling operations...
