Title: Flying Scotsman Service
Post by: Shiney Sheff on April 13, 2020, 07:51:59 PM
I am trying to find out what steam locomotives were used on the Flying Scotsman service pre BR days, having done a search I only turn up what classes of loco's were used, ( A1's and A3's ) ideally I want the names of the loco's and any other class of loco used.

Thanks in advance

Bob

Bob . Google Flying Scotsman ( train ) wikipedia. Suggests A1  A3 locos until 1935. Also liner.info maybe a help. A4s after 1935

Generally, the locos fitted with corridor tender, but not necessarily all of them.

Would need to go through a number of books to confirm which ones.

Think they were the King's Cross and Haymarket allocated ones.

Hello again Bob;

I'm not going through all my books, but I've found this from 'Locos of the LNER' by the RCTS.

A1/A3 fitted with corridor tender; note that these were not simultaneous, and some only had corridor tenders for a short period. Only ten corridor tenders were built for the class, and later (after 1937) transferred to A4s. These locos were used on the summer non-stop working; other locos may have been used on the winter train which had scheduled stops.

2544/7/52/6/63-9, 4472/4/5/6; 2506/52/6/69; 2743-6/9/50/2/95/96.

There is then a note added that 'the following are not known to have been used on a non-stop working (ie the Scotsman)'; 2506/52/6/69, 2743/5/9/52.

You can sort that bit yourself. Initially the train was worked by Kings Cross and Gateshead; later Haymarket joined in as well, and eventually replaced Gateshead.

A4s; a bit more difficult, as the book doesn't make much mention of locos actually on the train, but 4492+4489 are mentioned, as is 4464. Locos during non-stop were from KX and Haymarket.

Locos fitted with corridor tenders were;

2509-12; 4482-90/8; 4491-7. I'm sure you are aware that some of the A4s were built to haul, in general, the other high speed trains; Silver Jubilee, Coronation, and West Riding Limited. Some A4s were built for general service.

Post war, the corridor tender A4s held sway on the non-stop service, but other locos of the class were used in the winter service when the train had stops in the schedule.

I think that the W1, 10000, also worked the 'Scotsman' on occasion as part of its trials, but not regularly or necessarily successfully.

The ex NER pacifics, class A2, worked the winter service on occasion until 1932-no numbers quoted by the book.

 Thanks for all the information guys, it has given me a good starting point.

Crewearpley40

I did originally google " flying scotsman service " and it was only limited information on wiki which led me to the A1 and A3 class.

Thanks for all the info, it will keep me busy for quite a while by the looks of things.

Bob;

Though the book doesn't quote which of the NER Raven Pacifics worked the train, and hence my comment 'no number', the class was numbered 2400-4 (5 in all).

They were all allocated to Gateshead until Feb-Nov 1934 when they all went to York.

Their appearance on the Scotsman was limited to the winter service with its stops; the diagram ceased in winter timetable 1932.

Depending upon your timescale, and location, NER class C8 731D was noted on the down train in 1924. The RCTS book doesn't mention the ex GNR Atlantics on this train, and I don't know if they ever did.
