Title: RIP 'The Cat' Peter Bonetti
Post by: Trainfish on April 12, 2020, 03:43:13 PM
One of the most revered goalkeepers of all time. Only played for England 7 times but there was another half decent keeper around at the same time, Gordon Banks. Played 729 times for Chelsea though, there's not many present day footballers who will reach that target.

Famous people seem to be falling like flies today  :'(

Yes a sad loss.

One of those footballers you grew up with as a kid.
I hope he didn't do or say anything controversial in his time.  ;)

I had the pleasure of watching Peter "the Cat" Bonetti playing many times back in the seventy's. Used to love attending the "Shed" back then.

Those were the days when it was a physical game and there was no magic water to pour on broken legs and heal them in seconds!

100% agree. Whilst I am a football fan I'm not a huge fan of the Premier League or rather the pansies who play in it. People often think that ALL of football is like that, think again and watch lower league football. Not as tough as the 1970's but far better than the current top flight.

Not much chance of today's prima donnas becoming postmen after they finish their careers either, unlike the Cat.

Same here, I used to love standing in the Shed End, such atmosphere, players like"The Cat", Ron "Chopper" Harris and Micky Droy - no nonsense football!

Those were the days....

That Chelsea era had some great characters, Dave Webb  and Peter Osgood to name a few,  I wasn't a Chelsea supporter,  but I liked the players.

I spoke with Ron "Chopper " Harris about 3 years ago, he was with Julian Dicks, a pair of hard sods together!  :)

I'm guessing that was when footballers got tackled, got up and played on, maybe with a little retribution  ::)

as opposed to 'oh, he was withing 6 feet of me', fall down, scream in 'agony', wait for nomination for 'acting of the match'.

sorry, in my day, ball had a different shape, you got tackled very hard  :'( got up and played on.

talent showed in those days, and I don't mean acting talent.

Yep kicked about a heavy water logged brown leather ball on a wet muddy pitch nursing an hangover from the night before. Proper men then not like the cantankerous fairy's today, who dive at the mere slightest threat of a challenge!  ::)

Can we please have an 'RIP' thread without any sniping?
One has been locked and I'm poised for action again :unimpressed:

Yep, Bonetti certainly was a brilliant keeper back in those heady days.

As for watching lower league stuff, I've got little choice... I'ma Sunderland supporter  ;D

I'll be gutted if this season is nullified though, this is how we stand right now in league 2 with 10 matches to play. Most others only have 9:

I've never been a football fan, but I knew his reputation. I know what you mean about old style football careers. Back in the mid 90's I was in Facilities Management and I had a rep in regarding some ductwork we needed, none other than 'Sniffer' Clarke of Leeds United fame. My grandad was so soooo excited that I'd met him.

Hey John,

SwindonTown, eh? Cool!

Even cooler.... the Prairie tank on the emblem - with a tender!!!

Isn't all sport suspended over there at the moment? It is here, except for some buffheads who want to get the Thugby League season up and running again, which could happen because of the big tv money involved  :worried:

I've been a Town fan since 1976 so I've seen a few ups and downs, 1 more down than up. Although technically we had 1 down (relegated 2 divisions) and 2 ups (promoted after the play-off and up 1 division on appeal for the down) in 1990 after we thrashed your lot 1-0. To those who don't think 1-0 is a thrashing trust me, it should have been 5 or 6.
Yes, all sport is suspended and nobody knows if the season will be declared null and void or maybe continue where it left off. The other option is to use average points.

Going back to the 'Cat', we also had a keeper nicknamed the 'Cat', Kenny Allen who also ended up working for the Post Office when he retired from football. I guess it must be something to do with the word 'Post' with retired goalkeepers.

Someone has to! :D

Have to say I used to love watching Niall Quinn play back in the late 90's, he was good forward scored about 70 goals did he not?

The good old days when only the goalkeepers wore gloves.
When I was about 15 at school we were due to play a school match at Salisbury on a bitterly cold day.
Our Sports Master, Joe Colin, was old school. Our best player and centre forward, asked, the Day before if, die to the cold, he could wear gloves during the game.
"Certainly", came the reply from Mr Colin, "No problem".
Next morning when the team sheet went up our centre forward was in goal. And........Mr Colin stuck to his word.
I can't remember the result of the game .
