Are there several sizes of this type of tool available?
Just had one delivered (no size specified in the advert), and I was rather surprised that the chuck would not open to accept beyond 1 mm. diameter drill.

Yes, that's about par for the course, anything larger you'll need to go for something like these for example.

I use one to drill holes through sleepers to take track pins. 1mm is big enough for that.
Trev, thanks for the link, I have since found an archimedes type which according to the description (same site)
opens to 2 mm. Does look cheap & nasty though!

Yes (unless you get a very expensive one with interchangeable collets). The practicalities of the design of the chuck is such that it will be good for a finite range. One designed to open sufficient for larger sizes will not grip sufficiently on smaller bits.

Sounds like a supplier to avoid - Would you order from someone who advertised "Shoes"
(no size specified in the advert) and trust to luck that they would fit your size 10 feet??

You get what you pay for with most tools... Usually worth paying a bit more for better quality...
I have this one bought from my local model shop. Nicely made but not particularly cheap. Interchangeable collets from 0.1 - 3.2 mm.

Hi John,
That looks a decent piece of kit, does it have a return spring?
PLD,
Well respected supplier, Eileens Emporium.

AH!! Now I understand what an Archimedes drill tool is. @TrevL (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5583) 's picture of a pin vice threw me.
In my world DCC is easy, but worm gears and other mechanical gizmo's are the work of the devil :D
