Is anybody in their right mind going to admit that they were in the RAF Regiment ?
technically they were RAF FIRE SERVICE, though administered by RAF REGT.
but what, actually, is wrong with being a ROCK APE ?
RAF REGT, as well as providing crash/rescue services, provide GDT instructors, NBC instructors, DIs and backup for QPDs :)
an integral part of airfield defence, as well as a para capability [ mind you, one wonders who who think it a good idea to leap out of an aircraft with four fully functional engines tied to an oversized handkerchief] :hmmm:
and I won't even mention QCS 2.3
Luckily we only had one rocky on radar stations plus some had a fire engine of a civilian type. Me as a fairy I drove either a landrover with a trailer pump, or a landrover with the pump mounted on the back.
This happen ten years before I was stationed at RAF Neatishead. https://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/memorial-service-to-firemen-who-lost-their-lives-in-a-blaze-at-raf-neatishead-1-4410625 (https://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/news/memorial-service-to-firemen-who-lost-their-lives-in-a-blaze-at-raf-neatishead-1-4410625)
