Title: Storm Ciara hits the UK
Post by: Newportnobby on February 09, 2020, 10:07:26 AM
Where I am the rain thrashed down all night and now the wind is up above 60mph according to the Beeb (see below). I realise many folks in the UK will cop it worse than me, and know already @weave (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=735) has lost his fence. My main concern is my roof was made by a cowboy roofer now in the nick so this will be a test of his work, I guess :worried: :worried:
I hope we can get through this with no loss of life and appreciate it is probably minor in comparison to other stuff in the world but it is a 'once in a decade or two' occurrence (again, according to the Beeb)

I do hope your roof is ok Mick.
And I didn't realise that Weave had lost his fence (hope you can sort it Chris - maybe not today though).
Anyway, I hope it's not too bad everywhere and that people stay safe.

As for down here. The Met Office have been going on about it for days and we have an Amber warning for wind. Indeed it's blowing in excess of 50mph at the moment but it's nothing unusual for down here, just a bit of a blow.
We often get worse with no weather warnings.

Looks ok in South Africa though as I watch the cricket on the tv.

It's wild and woolly in Peterborough now. Harvey's dog walk was curtailed after we watched a tree come down in the local park.

Yeah, sunny there.

Rains lashing down here as I type this. Wind on Bealman's weather station peaked at 63 km/hr earlier today.

All in all, a normal Australian day  ;)

Blowing quite nicely down here on the Sussex coast. Lost all our fences over the last few years but now surrounded by lovely new ones with concrete posts so fingers crossed. The bit I hate most about gales is the noise from the roof when a big gust rattles the tiles. I know nowt will happen but the noise is amplified by the attic space and it always sounds like we're about to become open plan!

Wind just maxing out at 71 mph here in Lincolnshire, if the Beeb weather app is to be believed.

I've been out and checked all is right with my world and can see no damage in my immediate neighbourhood other than the new fence and gate the guy next door put up last autumn is looking like it may succumb soon. I did try to tell him that a six foot panel fence on 3" posts was likely to fail, but........

Main worry is the large tree in his back garden that, should it fail in the south westerly gale, will more than likely land on my bedroom! :o

Yeah, it's the trees that you have to worry about.

Chez Bealman has had tiles fly off over the years, but I've had all the trees around the house removed. Sorry to the greenies!

In a freak accident last year a lady was stopped at lights in Sydney and a gumtree fell on the car, killing her.

Hope you're all safe over there.  :beers:

We have a wind constant of 55km/h but gusts over 80km/h the unfortunate thing for us is in a SSW direction that we have the wind howling is nothing breaks it for about 23miles so we get quite a battering.

Our stable block has lost 3 8x4 sheets of ply covering the original glass light ridge section. And the way it's going the other 8 will follow suit. Luckily all landing on a concrete pad behind the building only used to empty the cess pits.

Looks like I'll be back on a roof this week. No need for a grinder this time though  :D

I have to agree Martin.
Looking out my bedroom window towards the entrance to Falmouth harbour it's rough, but I have seen the wind and waves a lot stronger with little or no warnings.  That said it may well get worse as the day goes on.  I expect Porthleven is taking a battering though.

Conservatory aka mancave/layout room has sprung a leak (again) :'(
Polythene dust sheet back on and I just hope it's down to the volume of rain hitting an odd angle to ingress. The rain ½ an hour ago was so heavy it looked just like a thick fog from the window of my euphemistically named 'studio' (actually a complete untidy  :poop: hole :-[)

We have been rather fortunate where we are - being roughly equidistant from the west and east coasts may help. There has been a lot of rain overnight and it is very windy, with some strong gusts though. I have just been for a walk round and, apart from a gnome, nothing seems out of place. Having just checked my electricity supply app, I can see that there are a lot of power outages across the country though which are affecting about 10k customers, (fingers crossed here). I hope none of you suffer any real damage, (apart from a few fence panels), and your leak @Newportnobby (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=264) is only temporary Mick.

Addit: The Irish Independent newspaper is saying that approximately 15K homes are without power.

It's been pretty draughty here on the South-West Cumbria coast. It's rained a heck of a lot and there are lots of reports of flooded roads in the area.
About all I've noticed of the wind was Ciara's First Concerto for Coal Bunker Lid and Unsecured Wheelbarrow in my neighbour's sideway.

Both wind and rain have eased up for now and it's even been sunny for a while but I believe that there's more of both wind and rain coming in.

Well it made the drive to work at 5am errr interesting!
But thankfully working inside the depot building today and not fuel point as I would probably either drowned or been blown off into the yonder!!
Although as pasted all over the news its causing chaos for the rail network we have had to curtail a few services and watching planned enginnering trains roll back in with even dropping a bit of ballast in anger!

Just had my car (and bungalow) jet-washed by an absolute deluge. Ciara celebrated her work with an extraordinary clap of thunder that I can only describe as being akin to dropping a large steel skip onto concrete.

Well, I've decided to brave it. There seems to be a lull 'ere in 'ampshire. The dogs need walking, we don't have a chicken to roast and more importantly the wine cellar  ;) is at zero.

Operation Tree Dodging! Hope to speak to you all later.

On a plus note the fence belongs to next door so at least we don't have to pay for it  :)

Cheers weave  :beers:

We've got 70mph winds here in North Oxfordshire, the two horses are having a duvet day today. All four field shelters are, currently, upright and, currently, still have all panels intact. It's pretty crap on the yard with the wind and the horizontal lashing rain. Because they're in all day the two horses need regular skipping out, checking, fresh water etc., so it's pretty grim going out there.

I'm trying to make the best of it.

Hmmm, hope the wife's okay.

Yes, I've just braved it to walk to the allotment. Very easy going, blown all the way but a struggle into the teeth of the gale, and uphill, coming back.
At least the shed and greenhouse are still where I left them  :D
And, like Weave, popped into the village shop for supplies of the bottled variety  :beers:
Home again now to watch the end of the cricket.

I now have one 6ft fence panel hanging half out of its concrete posts and another being shaken to bits. Think blokey next door and I need a talk about something different being put in :hmmm:
This wind is set in until mid afternoon Tuesday it would seem :uneasy:

Not only an eyesore but also a flaming menace.
The owners who failed to secure them properly should be thankful that they didn't hit a person or a moving vehicle.

Just spoken to a pal of mine who has been stuck out there all day in the channel (La Manche if your French) on a P&O ferry bound for Dover, they cant sail into Dover port as it is deemed too dangerous. So they are holding out in deeper water until the storm passes.

Earlier a rouge wave broached the ship broadsides heeling her over to a very concerning angle from the force of the wave, this guy has been sailing with me so I know from experience he doesn't scare easily! But he did sound a little concerned on the situation.

They have just had the call to go and get their second free meal of the day!

I spent Saturday morning taking down the marquee sides and then wrapping the sailing boat up in plastic. The marquee is so in normal weather I can continue working on the boat all winter..  By the end of Saturday we were hitting 45mph, Sunday it reached 70Mph, needless to say my winter sailing club didn't have their normal sailing..
As far as I know we've had no damage but a full garden inspection won't happen till I get home..

On the way in Ciara lowered the water on the broads quite considerably in places by up to 4 foot grounding many boats.  On the way out Ciara is now piling the water down the North Sea, raising the water level. So that most of the broads is on an amber warning but the southern broads is on a red warning.. this ties in with a spring tide which will make it worse..

Pretty bad up here in Nidderdale - at one point Pateley Bridge had the only severe flood warning in the country. Our village street was blocked by cars that thought it was a good idea to drive into door-handle deep water at 30 mph and then wondered why they got stuck. We ended up with three across the road. All quiet this morning but still a lot of water about.

Couldn't decide if it was an incorrect spelling of 'rogue' or perhaps 'rough'.
Whichever way, I wouldn't have kept anything down in that  :sick2:

Hi all,

Well the storm has err well kind of cleared up t'north, although yesterday was testing to say the least on the network. At work we had plenty of operations come to a halt. It took me 4 hours to get home with things becoming hit and miss even with insider knowledge trying to dodge the flooded sections, trees fouling lines and well services unable to run as stock and staff are misplaced.
One thing that honestly annoyed me was some peoples attitude moaning that trains weren't running and the age old quote "it doesn't happen in europe" which it does but we just don't see it! I know that on one flooded section a large rock had been washed onto the tracks which would of without a doubt derailed a train which just doesn't bear thinking about!

But time for work and it's snowing Crewe so things look like they are going to be interesting again!

Quite nice in this bit of Sussex too.

We got off lightly yesterday. All our fences and roof tiles are still where they were (even the fence that wobbles...), although neighbours had their joint fences turn into a T-shaped kite. The trees in the wood behind us are still all vertical. We are on the top of a hill, so no flood risk. Even our rotten asbestos garage roof is still attached, dammit - I need an excuse to replace it!

Hope those of you who suffered damage are OK, and that you get back to normal soon.

Cheers,

Chris

It has rained sharply since with no leaks so I'm hoping it was just a one off due to the torrential rain and it being blown up and under the peak of the conservatory. I'm leaving the polythene cover on until after Storm Dennis and will see what occurs

Storm Dennis is causing more chaos as it follows swiftly on from Ciara, dropping more rain on already saturated ground.

Thoughts with all those who may have experienced damaging flooding and other storm related problems. Here on the Fens we wake to find water covering large parts of the garden at the highest level we have seen outside our bungalow since we moved here 7 years ago. It's right on the limit, but not over the level that would cause us an issue, though there is a minor amount of water in my garage. Rain eased off now here and level has dropped and continues to subside.
I suspect others may have not been so lucky. :(
