Title: What does your Christmas dinner consist of?
Post by: Newportnobby on December 16, 2019, 09:34:34 PM
Seeing this quote from Markus in his layout thread it led me to wonder what folks around the world have for their Christmas meal so, if possible, could those in foreign countries let us know what is different from, shall we say, 'traditional Uk cuisine'

Quote from: McRuss on December 16, 2019, 06:02:10 PM
Hello Joe,

that depends on when they celebrate christmas. Usually in Germany we start christmas celebrations on december 24th (Holy Night), In many families on these evening only a small meal is served. e.g. Wiener Sausages with potato salad, Fondue. In my family we eat traditionally scalded sausages (Bratwurst), but the stock in which the saussages are scalded is tipped whith whitewine and vinegar, then you put in chopped oniens bayleave, juniper berries. It is called "blaue Zipfel" (blue lappet) a franconian dish. On December 25th and on some families the evening before roaste goose or duck is served. Served with depending on the region with potatoes or potatoe dumplings and red cabbage.

Markus

Usually for us there's no starter then it's roast turkey, streaky bacon, pigs in blankets, stuffing (either thyme & parsley or sage & onion), bread sauce, roast potatoes and a selection of veg from parsnips, sprouts, peas, carrot and green beans plus, of course, boatloads of gravy.
I'm not keen on Christmas pudding so tend to have a couple of heated mince pies with brandy custard. Oh lawks, I'm slobbering just at the thought

By the way, brussel sprouts should have been put on to cook a couple of months ago.

When I was a kid back there it was baked beans on toast with a sprig of holly on it.

However in the last few years (being summer here), it's a selection of cold meats (especially ham, which I have a habit of winning in raffles at the club), cheeses, dips and the like.

All consumed outdoors on the new decking.

Oh yeah, heaps of prawns, which I can't stand, but Mrs Bealman gets through a wheelbarrow load  ;D

Except when dinning out at the MRC, Sailing Club , Art Club , Weaving Group, Factory, Dinners We don't have starters.

But at home it's normally Turkey and all the usual trimmings. However we've had a lot of turkey this year. So this year it's going to be Roast beef, yorky puds, then the normal Christmas trimmings, brussels with chestnuts and bacon, parsnip, carrots, SWMBO's home made sage and stuffing. and Gravy..
I'll have chrismas pud and cream SWMBO will have mince pies and Cream..

After that it will be roll on Burns night..

We often cook during the christmas time (24th to 2nd) an italian specialty called "Bollito misto" (acccording to wikipedia "mixed boiled meat" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollito_misto)).
The version that's always inspiring us is the one loved by Italian king Vittorio Emmanuele II. He escaped his own court at least once a year with only some very trusted friends to eat something like this: (only the flesh part shown  :heart2:)
(Each piece of meat is 2 pounds, and there are about 14 different types of meat  :claphappy:) plus the salsas and vegetables and...

Searching for the different meats can be difficult, but is part of the preparation game.

Advantage: you cook only one day. The next few days you are living from left overs  ::)
The broth goes into a heavenly risotto. And boild meet can be eaten cold or reheated...

Living alone, Christmas tends to be "just another day" the freezer ain't big enough for saving much in the way of left overs so if turkey appears it's likely to be just  breast slice, not even one of those frozen stuffed breast crowns, (that stuffing is usually dire) I do like me Christmas pud though, but instead of brandy sauce or fortified custard I open a bottle of advocaat, goes nice with mince pies too.

Hi Mick,

I know the OP is for our overseas friends and their culinary delights but here in the UK, as it's only the two of us, we have gone slightly different twice in the last five years.

Basically, we couldn't be bothered with all the faffing about so scrambled eggs on toast washed down with Cava for brekkie. Then present opening, then dog walking and then in the afternoon M&S Lasagne for four with garlic bread and lots of red wine, pudding (I only really like ice cream) and then watching Von Ryan's Express, or the like, usually nodding off before Frank S. gets shot.

Very little washing up, great stuff although I do miss the cold cuts with a jacket spud and pickles on boxing Day watching the footie.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Oh how I wish I could get away with that as it sounds wunnerful, but duty is duty and Mum would be very peed off if I stayed at home. I can't drink much as it makes my heart race (a bit like Liz Hurley :heart2:). I'd be happy with your main meal or perhaps even a Christmas Pizza but would substitute tiramisu for pud and Where Eagles Dare for the film :)

If wishes were fishes we'd all cast nets

We don't do Christmas meals at all.
Neither of us are at all partial to turkey or mince pies or christmas pud and growing most of our own veg we have parsnips, sprouts, carrots etc for much of the year anyway.
So...on Christmas day I'll cook indian or chinese or japanese style. This year it's Moroccan lamb shank tagine.

In your mind's eye, if you can picture the absolute leg before wicket traditional British Christmas dinner including :-

Roast turkey
Roast spuds (done in goose fat)
Yorkshire puds
Brussels, peas, carrots etc.
Paxo sage and onion stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Bisto gravy

followed by

Mrs. Peakes Christmas pudding
with the fantastic Ambrosia custard

all finished in time to watch Her Majesty on the telly then..........

you'll know what I intend to have piled up on my plate next week.  :)

Alec.

I'm hoping for pheasant, cooked with onions, carrots, juniper berries and powdered coriander.

However, we may be as many as 12 at table so the logistics might be complicated as we would need 3-4 pheasants.

Dessert will be the French version of a Yule log, which is delicious as it is 90% ice cream.

As the only Brit present I will be entitled to a second dessert - Marks & Spencer individual Christmas pudding.

Family pot-luck in Southern California.

The Management's family (and now mine by marital good fortune) are 5th-generation Japanese Americans, so I make the sushi. You know it makes sense, the British gaijin brings the raw fish.

No turkey, that was Thanksgiving, but every family member brings a favorite you can count on. A big gathering, the food served buffet-style, help yourself and sit where there's room.

Lovely.

Here,
It depends by the region....north , centre , south.
We start on 24th that is called "vigilia" and  we don't eat meat both for lunch and dinner.
Here we have not a typical Christmas dinner because we eat the "the rest" of Christmas lunch that's very monumental and impressive usually....many kind of plates with many kind of "antipasti", pasta, meats  and cakes..it's always depends by the region....and many kind of wines obviously!
The "bollito misto" as shown over by AlexandreJesse is typical of Christmas "north" lunch..
So...Merry Christmas to all.

Marco

Pretty standard here,  Turkey and veg and lots of dressing (stuffing for you guys in the UK) While there's only the three of us (well 4 with the Cat who gets her own plate of Turkey).  Its been a while since Canadian Thanksgiving (which is my fave holiday as its only about a nice meal :)

One addition that I do love here though is Yams, I  Love mashed yam with butter and Maple syrup (Hell anything tastes better with Maple syrup!!).

My fave Christmas meal though is cold turkey, chips and pickles on boxing day, this year with some awesome pickled green tomatoes that we made earlier in the year.

(also.. we're all sympathising and sending good thoughts to Oz, BC has had its fair share of serious forest fires in the last couple of years so we understand whats you're going through)

I find turkey uninteresting but getting the family to agree on an alternative is a nightmare, so it'll be the usual t-word again this year. I look forward to my wife's Christmas puddings which are light and fruity, not dark and bitter like some.

When I was younger I used to prefer what we got on Boxing Day. That was my Mum's birthday (she would have been 100 this year...) and she refused to be fobbed off with Christmas leftovers! So we often had a simpler, nicer meal that day.

Whatever you do, have a good Christmas everybody.

Cheers,

Chris

If I'm at relatives for the Christmas dinner I do like to get home and relax with a couple of fingers of my favourite tipple (Southern Comfort) using Mick's Magic Measure of two fingers, and I don't mean the middle ones

Highland Park is good and so is Southern Comfort although I can find it a bit syrupy, so I came up with this:

Sicilian Comfort:

2msr Southern Comfort
1msr Galliano
1msr Cointreau
Juice of 1/2 lemon

Serve over ice in a tumbler or highball glass according to your aesthetic preference.
Garnish with a slice of lemon and possibly a cherry as it's Christmas.
Enjoy!

Christmas Eve dinner starts here in about 20 minutes. Picked up 1.6kg of king prawns and some salads this morning. Will follow them up with a chocolate slice and white choc and raspberry ripple ice cream. I've got some marinated chicken to grill on the bbq for Christmas Day, and I'll grill some mushrooms, corn, capsicum and onions. All the above washed down with a Pinot Noir/Chardonnay sparkler.

Have a happy Christmas everyone.

Hi Mick,

Well, yesterday I woke to a note from Mrs. Weave saying gone to M&S early. There had been no discussion beforehand regarding the Christmas day meal. I said a few prayers to St. Anthony to find me a ready meal Lasagne or similar but no   :(.

Looks like were having the traditional works, Turkey, Ham etc., nothing pre done except the Aunt Bessie's Yorkshires

I wouldn't mind except that I do most of it and then can't be bothered to eat it. At least I'll have lots of cold cuts on Boxing Day  :claphappy:.

Hope everyone enjoys their feasts and no working on the back of the layout for a few weeks as you'll break something at the front  :D

HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all.

Christmas is not an Official Thing in these parts, but for reasons lost in the mists of time as part of the garbled adaptation of vaguely Christmassy elements chicken has been adopted as the must-eat poultry of the season, and bizarrely Kentucky Fried Chicken has established itself as the leading provider thereof - there'll be a queue outside pretty much any KFC store this Christmas Eve with people waiting to pick up their pre-ordered chicken (which, best I can tell, KFC raised in a brine bath and fried with the same oil they've been using since 1971).

Other options are available, such as here at the Railsquid Household Informal Christmas Party:

Tomorrow is just another working day and all the Christmas decorations will come down to be replaced by New Year ones, New Year being the main celebratory day of the season featuring food which looks like this:

Ta, I am actually technically on vacation on Christmas Day for about the second time in 12 years of living here, which translates into me looking after the Squidlet to give the Mrs. a break. Was planning to take him to the big railway museum but the little blighter's gone and caught something so that might not be an option... On the plus side he went to bed very early so I got a decent ballasting session done.

while we are stuffing ourselves, let us remember those far away, looking at rat-packs, or even if a christmas dinner, maybe only one can of cheer.

Boxing Day here now. Yesterday's fare at Chez Bealman was smaller than usual, and munched on throughout the morning, as things were a little different this year with a GrandBealette on the scene. The Bealettes were all going out for lunch, so we basically had prawns and nibbles while the presents were handed out:

Christmas was a little different for us this year. I have recently acquired a future son-in-law so we were invited to his mums house for Christmas dinner along with my mum and some friends of theirs.
Daughter picked up my mum and then us and drove us to her intendeds' this was going to make a nice change for me as usually I'm the sweaty spot rushing round the kitchen like a loon.
His mum had made vegetable soup which we had with fresh hot rolls, this was followed by a traditional lunch of perfectly cooked turkey, roasted and mashed spuds, brussels, roasted carrots & parsnips (food of the devil however you dress them up), stuffing, cranberry sauce & gravy.
Whether it was the fact that it was cooked by someone else or the fact he has done a bit of chefing in the past I don't know, but it all tasted very good indeed (and all gluten free for his mum). Followed by homemade sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream and all of this washed down with copious amounts of red wine because I wasn't driving for once  :claphappy:
Daughter and her intended then did all the dishes also, before pouring me into the back of the car and depositing at home.
So all in all, a different but very enjoyable Christmas day for us.
On a side note, one of the other guests was what he described as an amateur artist called Mark Ireland, he showed me some of his work on his phone and I was blown away, just loved his style and immediately ordered two prints from him. So what I saved on buying a bird and all the trimmings I spent on art work (and then some, maybe too much wine after all  ;D), you can see some of his work here https://markireland.art/work
Right, I need more coffee now  ;)

The plan was a 3 bird roast with all the bits, the reality was lentil curry (has the  same effect as sprouts) and meatballs. Why the change?  several pints in the local at lunch time made me rather hungry, waiting 2-3 hours for the roast wasnt an option.

Some of the Asian and African images, done with a very modern twist I found exceptional, pen and ink drawings with watercolour fills.
There is a cracking monochrome image of the modern variant of Joker in there somewhere too.

The typical Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter lunch(we do lunch instead of dinner) is country ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, bread rolls, green beans & corn, dumplings, sweet potatoes, veggie tray (for the health conscious in the family), bourbon balls (sweets), "snow balls", chinese clusters, and three kinds of fudge.

We go all out here.
