Post by: gavin_t on November 12, 2019, 01:22:43 PM
Notice alot of people have animals in their pictures.
So who's got what  :D

:photospleasesign:

We have Bob the Jack russell

Aquired him about 3 years ago as an ex stray rescue. Other half isn't keen on him (definatly and mans man) but he is a character and hilarious  ;D
Has an irrational hatred of the postman and anyone who wears a hi-vis  :-\ but other then that lovable chap but isn't much help with N gauge as will either eat it or bark at it

Oscar, 6 1/2 year old husky, ex-rescue at 6 months old, previous owners couldn't manage him and their new baby.

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/83/311-121119135403.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=83843)

at the time we still had Coco, our last shepherd, and I think she is responsible for how well he turned out, we lost her about six months later.

no destructive tendencies, unlike some huskies, no aggression, and great with the grandkids.

but not much of a guard dog.

correction...
must have had a senior moment, apologies.

Coco was training Oscar for nearly two years, not six months, and achieved more than I have in the six years we've had him  :-[

Another Oscar [on the left] with Ella.
From the same breeder in North Lincolnshire and three years apart, they are half brother and sister [same father different mothers].
Typical Labradors in all respects - love water, will do anything for food.

This is Dolly, our Chesapeake Bay Retriever, bred for Duck Retrieval from the North American Lakes. She is 5 and a half years and just recovered from 2 cruciate ligament operations. She is now fighting fit and loving life again now that she is pain free.

When we had 3 dogs...

All lagotto romagnolos (Italian water dog - no we hadn't heard of them 10 years ago, either).

In the middle is Marco, who died just over a year ago aged 16 years, 2 months. The grey one to the left is his great-grand-daughter, Lexie who is now 4 and on the right is his great-great-grand-daughter, Bella who is 3. They all look filthy because they've been in the sea!

And this is One Cat to Rule them All, Jasmine...

the rehome that thinks she's a princess.

A home without a dog or a cat is just a house.

Cheers,

Chris

I now have four cats.

The oldest is Scamp, who showed up on the farm I lived on in 2013 as a kitten. Wouldn't let you touch him or pick him up at first, now he enjoys being around his humans. Has a thing for squirrels. Also the talker of the group. This is an old picture of him, but a favorite of mine.

Second oldest now is K.C. I found him in 2016 while out railfanning on a hot July day east of Louisville. He was out in the middle of nowhere so I couldn't leave him. I was chasing a Kansas City Southern (KCS) "Gray ghost" locomotive when I found him, which is how he got the name K.C. Loves food, and always comes running when he hears the bags of shredded cheese being moved out of the fridge. Also nicknamed him "Snugglebug", because he likes to sit right on your chest in front of you when he wants attention.

And finally, the two kittens I found underneath my outbuilding for my N scale stuff back at the end of September. I hadn't seen the mother around too much and it was obvious these guys were in rough shape. The weather was in the 90s and while I was going to leave them alone at first, on a return trip I noticed a bunch of flies hanging around waiting for the end. Brought them in, cleaned them up, and started bottle feeding them, as they were only about 3 weeks old. Now they're about 10 weeks old and doing great, no issues at the vet, though they didn't like getting their shots. Top photo is "Chip", the bottom is "Puck".

Of the four, Scamp has always been fascinated watching my trains run, though he knows not to bother them. Puck is now showing an interest in watching too. Chip is terrified of them, and K.C. has no interest at all (because it's not food related, I guess).

Had a budgie for thirteen years until it carked it a few weeks back.

So to paraphrase John Cleese, I've got an ex-budgie  :uneasy:

We now have 5 cats and 1 dog.
The cats in the first pictures are siblings, we sadly had to have their Mother put to sleep earlier this year. They are all about 9 years old now.

This is 'White Toes' and this picture was featured in a calendar a couple of years ago
(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/83/4209-121119194053-838541096.jpeg)

Then we have another one, (who is the 'bully' of the litter) -

Then two more -

The fifth cat, 'Bella', is a long haired, one eyed cat. I took her to the Vet's a while back as she had horrible 'gunge' in her left eye. When we got to the Vet's, he said that the eye had ruptured for some reason, so she had what was left removed and stitched up. She is about 16 years old now but is still quite fit and active. For some reason, I can not find a picture of her.

The final picture is of our dog 'Blue', he is an Alsatian crossed with .......... you name it! He is the most gentle, placid dog you could wish to meet, but, if any one comes near the house, well, his bark frightens me!  :) And he is virtually as tall as me when he stands up.

I did post a picture of 'Blue' allowing 'Bella' to share his food but I can not find the picture now, however, this is the link for the post - https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=42649.msg529414#msg529414 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=42649.msg529414#msg529414)

Looking back, I realise that at one time, we had 13 cats and 3 dogs, all 'rescues'  :o

I was the same as parents always had cats.
Ended up with the dog as the other half doesn't like cats and to be fair I wasn't keen on dogs  :-\
Somehow now me and the dog are best mates and she finds the dog annoying  ;D

Everyone can see I have a (predominantly) white cat without me saying anything. For some reason I get plastered in white cat hair but the ginger ones stay on Hookey ???
Before I do any clothes washing I have to run the rinse cycle on the washing machine and even that doesn't get rid of all of it.

Hello.
My daughter has a cat named Bunny.
When we adapted her, we misheard "Bonnie" and became "Bunny".
She's a very calm cat and well behaved.
I got lucky on this one because I was worrying about my tiny N empire.
She's ignoring my train and layout so far.
My daughter made a couple of videos.

I thought she can get gazillion subscribers and I can retire from my work but it didn't happen. :scowl:  :smiley-laughing:

My parents had cats but most of us  had dogs.
At our peak we had  7 rough collies and one Border collie, sadly they're all gone now, SWMBOs hands just couldn't cope with the grooming required anymore so they weren't replaced when they died..

We now have 1 Border collie a rescue he's now 9 and we've had him a couple of years. We are looking to get another rough collie to keep him company but haven't been able to organise one yet.

I'll have to dig around and see of I can find some pictures..

Meet Mikey, Luna, and Bilbo.
Mikey and Luna are my son's, who we look after 5 days a week during work hours. Both are 3yrs old.  Mikey is allergic to most things and has to have a special diet, and an injection once a month to desensitise him, you don't want to know the Vet bills.
Luna the Sha Pei is very sweet, but also very timid, unless it's on the other side of the glass, in which case she's very brave and vocal.
Bilbo is ours, we rescued him almost 7 years ago and he had "issues"!  Suffice to say if you broke in, you probably wouldn't get out again without suffering a great amount of blood loss, but with us, he is just a 36kilo lap dog.  It'll break my heart when he checks out.

In the White corner, weighing in at 4.2kg, we have Penfold, 'The Destroyer of Worlds'.

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/83/5604-131119220019.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=83892)

Currently in training for his next round of destruction. To date he has caused £600 of damage in the house, including my Kef speakers, a bookcase, and picture frames. He was a rescue kitten from the Blue Cross five years ago. His favourite things are warm radiators, dried chicken treats and poking our other cat. Dislikes cuddles, being manhandled and being told off.

In the Black corner, weighing in at 3.2kg, we have Chaos, a.k.a. 'D.L.P.', 'Daddy's Little Princess'.

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/83/5604-131119220627.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=83893)

She was a five week old feral kitten when we got her fifteen years ago, along with her sister Mayhem who we lost to a car at the age of three. Her favourite things are cuddles with daddy, sleeping on the bed and sleeping. Dislikes Penfold!.

He loves to provoke her and chase her round the house. She eventually decides enough is enough, turns on him and kicks his arse. No damage is done, but it's quite comical to see him suddenly realise he's in the firing line!

I love them both dearly.

This is Charlie - taken in 2016 so he's grown since then, now he's finally topped out around 8' 9".  He's one of 11 snakes, five of which are ones I've bred over the years.  In 2019 I produced my first ever BEL, the result of around 8 years of planning.

But we've always had dogs as well, well German Shepherds to be precise, the last two were both rescues form Battersea.  The first was Bess who I had a strong bond with and she got ne through some dark periods of my life

Kirby acre's is a cat house; we have 4.

Biskit, a ginger and white tom who's the smallest of the bunch.
Cookie, a calico. She takes after her name somewhat at around 4kg.
And the we have Sparkle and Twinkle; brother and sister tabbies. Sparkle is around 4kg but twinkle tops out at just over 6kg (and is the windiest of the lot. Frightened of his own shadow the daft lump).

Fortunately my train shed is at the bottom of the garden outside the cat run but modelling on the dining room table can get quite interesting at times.

This is Tilly, a Kelpie which is an Australian sheep herding breed whose bloodlines originated in Scotland 150 years ago. Tilly likes to hunt joggers and cyclists so she is never let off the lead on public pathways. Unfortunately, joggers and cyclists are groups who mostly have a limited sense of humour and don't appreciate being rounded up.

Beware dogs eating grapes, can be expensive in vet bills. Our little Cavachon swallowed a grape that fell on the floor, as grapes (and saltanas) can be deadly to dogs we phoned the emergency vet as it was 8 o clock at night.
Out of hours consultation £250
Injection to make him sick another £150 or activated charcoal dose £30.
We opted for the charcoal, stayed with him all night and he seemed ok in the morning.
The vet did say not all dogs are affected, perhaps we were just lucky.
Which are apparently running a campaign for reasonable vet bills.

It looks like you were right. Bertie does like to steal pieces of paper, card, cardboard etc. He then takes them to somewhere secret (at least he thinks it's a secret place anyway but I know where it is) to destroy them. I managed to catch this one before he could destroy it:

Bobby is more into stealing cotton buds which he proudly walks around with in his mouth or as earlier today, nips outside, picks up a leaf and takes it to Bertie's 'secret' place. I'll get some pictures of him doing that soon hopefully

Mrs Fish is a 'feeder' not just to me but to them too. They (Bobby and Bertie that is) are both now just over 4kg and are both heavier than Bella and Betty.
Below is Betty who is our almost ex-feral cat. She's struggling to accept the 2 younger ones indoors but is fine with them in the garden. We can't get them to stay in the same room at the moment but we're determined to get there. Bella doesn't care as she's in charge and does what she wants whether any of the other 3 are around or not:

I would have taken a picture of Bella too but the stoopid cat has just gone out!

I saw the 'kittens' mother the other day when I cut down my mate's tree, I got the right tree at the second attempt but that's another story, and she's doing rerally well. They have 2 other cats and they all seem to get on ok.

We had to put our 19 year old cat Fergie to sleep the Vet  said she wouldnt servive the
Kidney operation she needed and it was kinder to
do that than let her suffer .
She was an avid layout supporter or should I say tree eater she used to come through the window of the shed in the summer and chew the handmade copper wire trees .

Always sad to lose a pet. We lost Brian when he came through the catflap at 100mph and did himself serious damage and didn't survive it. Then Bruce who always struggled with asthma and we eventually had to let him go. Then Boris the mad cat who got run over. Buki was 19 when her thyroid issues eventually got too much for her. Finally Bonnie who had FIV when I think she was just over 1 year old. Bella is 11 now, Betty 2.5, Bobby and Bertie both 8 months. Hopefully they will all last a while yet but it's difficult with cats as they're left to go outside on their own etc and I must admit that these days I always wonder how many we will have left whenever I return home. I also hope each time that Mrs Fish hasn't re-homed another one!

Our three cats are indoor cats aged 14, 2 and 18 months. They very content as long as they have space to play and bimble around and we take time to play with them, we live far too close to a busy road to have it any other way. We are hoping to move within the next 1 to 2 years and a priority will be a "catio" to give them the option of having a safe outdoor space too.

Going off at a slight tangent, does anybody use or have a recommendation for electric nail grinders for dogs? Bella has always had very long front claws which we have struggled to keep short so we end up having to take her to the vet. Now this evening she has accidentally scratched one of our grandsons so we figure we have to get on top of it. Any advice/ideas welcome.

Cheers,

Chris

In 1981 I did a measured survey of a remote diamond mine hospital that had a fully equipped operating theatre. The tool cabinet in the operating room was a real eyeopener. It was literally every wood and metal tool you could think of but in surgical steel. Saws, hammers, chisels, pincers the lot.  :o

Our cat Bella is about 23 years old and one of the problems with an elderly cat is they have problems retracting their claws. In the house, I now have to wear 'working' trousers, as three pairs have been ruined over the last few months and the number of 'pin pricks' I have on my legs ................!

Our Bella doesn't have that problem as she doesn't really engage in any form of physical activity including scratching etc. She does spend a lot of time on the patio though which I think keeps her claws down. I don't generally encourage any of ours onto my lap apart from on the odd occasion when I'm actually wearing trousers.............. :hmmm:
But yes, I still somehow end up with pinholes and scratches on my legs, arms, chest, shoulders etc.

Ok so you took it off me. I'll see if I can find one  here:

Bertie is quite happy to watch from a safe distance:

Time to "put the Bobby back in the box" I think. To be fair, he actually put himself in there as they do:

We tend to keep Bella in a bowl as she's a bit bigger:

Here is Buddy who is not a cat. Rather, he is a beast called by us humans an Eastern Long Necked Turtle. These guys are native to Australia and Buddy came to us quite by accident. He appeared one day about 15 years ago behind my shed. The curious thing is that there is no way he could have crawled into this enclosed space. My theory is that he'd been carried off by a bird and dropped there. He had clearly been someone's pet, but inquiries concerning where he came from proved fruitless.

I had always thought reptile pets were rather slow moving and remained motionless most of the time. In his tank, he is as active as a pet mouse. Put your finger anywhere near him and he'll have a go at devouring it. He is not warm and cuddly (not his fault), but he is most lively and interesting.

No, they've been going out for at least 6 weeks now. I haven't granted them access to the catflap yet so they have to be supervised, especially Bobby. Luckily they don't go far and only ever stay in our garden but that will change soon I'm sure. We usually take them out for about an hour.

For almost a century, the French registry for dogs (SOCIÉTÉ CENTRALE CANINE?) has followed a system for naming that makes it easy to determine the age of a dog by its registered name. The first name begins with the designated letter for the year, followed by the kennel name (some kennel names may proceed the letter but in France, it is almost always a suffix). Over the years, the letters K, Q, W, X, Y and Z were eliminated because it was difficult to find French names beginning with them. Every 20 years the alphabet starts over. This year it is V.

Our dog is officially Laika as named by the breeder, but we call him Maugan and so does our vet though his papers say Laika.

According to me, Bertie (orange) and Bobby (grey) will be 1 year old on Thursday. Mrs Trainfish reckons they're already a year old and I've got my dates wrong. Either way as far as I'm concerned they will turn into cats rather than kittens. Some people seem to call them kittens until they grow to 3 feet tall but not me. So, happy birthday to Bobby (grey) and Bertie (orange) this week and here they are relaxing last weekend:

(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/149/medium_262-250225221042-1495171396.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=149536)

Note, they are a lot bigger than they look in that picture and Bertie (orange) doesn't always look half asleep. He usually looks fully asleep unless he's climbing the curtains.

They are the most badly behaved, deliberately obtuse and downright mischevious pair of good for nothing cats we have ever been owned by, but for all that they are also the most loving (got to keep the future hooman meat happy) and I  think they are both totally awesome

Had some worrying news about Bella, our year-old Staffie Cross. We had noticed one of her eyes looking inflamed and a bit red a couple of days after she was spayed, so took her to the vets today.

Looks like a wooden splinter has entered her eye cavity through her mouth after playing with sticks and is causing inflammation. There is a good chance this could get very expensive if we want to save her eye.

In order to soften the blow, I am reluctantly selling off some rolling stock and this will be appearing on the N'Porium Facebook group over the next few days.

The moral of the story is don't let your dog play with sticks.

Adam,

Bella is a fine looking dog and we all hope for the best for her.

Is there really a choice about spending the money to save her eye?

Our little Cavachon had Pancreatitis before Christmas vet bill came to £4500. Fortunately Pet Plan paid out.

Hello folks

Meet Sergio. Sergio is only kind-of a pet. He shows up on the kitchen window sometimes with a few friends expecting a couple of pieces of dog food.

Sergio is an Australian Magpie, a much loved bird species in this country. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is considered to be highly intelligent bird, exhibiting complex cognitive abilities and social behaviors. I know that Sergio plays mind games with me over food and usually wins.

The Australian Magpie is quite distinct genetically from the Eurasian Magpie which is the species one would see in the UK.

Occasionally during breeding season. Some magpies. A few of them don't like cyclists, joggers, and dogs near their nests so will do a bit of swooping. Understandable! Sergio doesn't attack me as he knows full well which side of his bread is buttered.

Apparently, magpies have good memories of human faces. What did you do, George, to deserve being swooped?
