Percy could be a very useful chassis....

Thank you very much for this.

The carriage looks jolly interesting; hopefully the other one has a brake end.  Sorry;
not sure which is Annie and which is Clarabel!

I think the 009 people might find Percy's chassis of interest...

Best wishes.

John

I also wish that they get Clarabel's guard compartment right!

Has there been a stealth release of these in America or anywhere, as watching a youtube video by Train Tsar fun, he had Annie and Clarabel, though no Thomas as yet.

Check out at 3:01 in the following vid.

He has posted another video tonight of them running with a Tomix Thomas, Annie and Clarabel. Smaller than the Tomix versions and both seem to be the same mold, only thing that seems different to me is the names on them, even the faces are the same.

oooof, his Tomix Thomas isn't running very smoothly! Ours is really good.

The size difference is quite striking. If the Bachmann Thomas is scaled to match their coaches I foresee a few nice conversions for British layouts  :)

Nice models but a shame there is no brake coach.  Definitely looks like the new Thomas is to British N gauge.  Getting tempted...  For our Grandsons obviously!

;)

Kind regards

But ... but ... but ...

When did A & C become 4-wheelers? In all of the Rev W Awdry's illustrations, they are DEFINITELY bogie coaches!

Because of the TV series which will be more familiar to TTT fans of today?  Hornby's OO A & C are the same, and they've been around for at least 20 years (I know, still got my lad's OO sets)

Ahhhhh ... I see.

I still rely upon my dark blue cloth-bound hardbacks as my authentic source of information here ... although I'm missing a few. I still need to acquire:

No. 2    Thomas the Tank Engine
No. 4    Tank Engine Thomas Again
No. 8    Gordon the Big Engine
No. 11   Percy the Small Engine
No. 13   Duck and the Diesel Engine
No. 20   Very Old Engines
No. 23   Enterprising Engines
No. 24   Oliver the Western Engine
No. 26   Tramway Engines
No. 27   Really Useful Engines
No. 28   James and the Diesel Engine
No. 29   Great Little Engines
No. 30   More about Thomas the Tank Engine
No. 31   Gordon the High-Speed Engine
No. 32   Toby, Trucks and Trouble
No. 33   Thomas and the Twins
No. 34   Jock the New Engine
No. 35   Thomas and the Great Railway Show
No. 36   Thomas Comes Home

And any after that ...

I have a few oddities, too, in particular:

My copy of No. 6, Henry the Green Engine, is bound in a cover which is tooled in red with "Thomas the Tank Engine" and a profile of Thomas on the front

My copy of No. 9, Edward the Blue Engine, is in its right binding but upside down and back to front

If anyone want to trade me some of my missing ones, I have duplicates of:

No. 5   Troublesome Engines (glossy board-backed, not blue cloth-bound)
No. 8   Henry the Green Engine (paperback)
No. 16 Branch Line Engines (glossy board-backed)

I've seen AGR Models in Leighton Buzzard https://www.agrmodelrailwaystore.co.uk/ (https://www.agrmodelrailwaystore.co.uk/) have Annie, Clarabel and two Troublesome Trucks listed on their website:

I have had an imported Percy for about a month + (import) but have not thought any more about it until I also get the Thomas> Percy is nicely weighted and below the running plate looks like the makings of a fine, but certainly not cheap, chassis. I am not sure if Bachmann UK intends to import them as the last time I looked they were not even listed let alone 'awaiting'.

Did manage to pick up a Thomas, A+C and three Trucks from Totally Thomas the other day, quite surprised at how tiny he is, more so when compared to a scale E2 (which I need to lower a bit more on the chassis).
But even though he's the size of a Terrier, he runs perfectly well on my track, has a decent amount of weight to him. Not opened him up as of yet to see how easy he might be to DCC, but I'd say he'd need a tiny decoder to fit inside.

Have pre-ordered Percy so should get him soon too.

Have opened himself up to take a look, and it really doesn't seem all that hard to wire him to a DCC decoder, might be a bit of a fuss trying to pack the wires back in, but a suitably small decoder should fit quite well inside him (possible wired Lenz Silver mini), though not too sure which wires go where without cutting them.
Would assume that Percy would be the same though still awaiting him to be posted.

Any chance of a side on view showing how high the chassis sits under the body/over the footplate (alongside a ruler would be great) so I can see what possibilities the chassis may offer for a scratch built body.
Yes, I'd buy one then ditch Thomas's body  ;)

Are the square blocks on the PCB STAY ALIVE CAPACITORS?.

The two outer wires (black) are the power feed from the wheels and the two inner (blue and red) the motor wires.
Have just finished adding DCC sound to mine, but with Annie permanently attached and the decoder (a Zimo MX649) and speaker (a Youchoos MicroCube) installed in the coach.
Currently doing the same sort of thing to Percy, with the first "troublesome truck" permanently attached.

The look like inductors for suppression of electrical interference.
Stay alive capacitors would be much larger - particularly for DC where you can't use polarised ones (which offer higher energy storage density). Realistically to get stay-alive for DC running you'd need to fit a decoder as the NGS have done with the Hunslet shunter.

Though others before me have said they most likely aren't, the chassis does seem to act like there's a flywheel inside as cutting power doesn't lead to an instant stop but comes to a more gentle stop instead.

Cheers for listing out which wire goes where, I'll prob put a basic decoder inside mine so it all fits neatly inside Thomas.

Apologies for asking a stupid question:

Did you simply remove the existing PCB and make the necessary connections to the appropriate decoder terminals, or does something more subtle have to be done?

I rather fancy having a Thomas  and/or Percy on the layout, as the  grandkids would love it and I could run Thomas Days at the preserved railway! :claphappy:

There are no stupid questions but occasionally stupid answers !
Removed the power feeds from the circuit board and led them through to the coach (for Thomas) and first truck (for Percy). That left me just enough room to lead the new motor feed wires up through the back of the loco and onto the motor terminals on the PCB.

So the motor feeds from the decoder are attached to the same terminals as the blue and red motor wires? Have I understood that correctly?
Title: Re: Thomas and Friends in N from Bachmann
Post by: koyli55002 on June 21, 2021, 04:52:51 PM
correct - I did look at taking wires direct to the motor from the decoder but was worried about damaging the motor as the connections are MINUTE !

I can imagine. Everything in this hobby is minute.

I haven't been active for a while partly because of eye problems. But I have had my cataracts done now, so feel like dabbling again before something else goes wrong with my poor peepers.. ;)

Thanks for replying so quickly by the way. I was a bit dubious about resurrecting an old thread.

Afternoon all,

At long last I've picked up Thomas, Annie and Clarabel for what should be the start of a new project. They are fantastic little (and I mean little!) Models!
(https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/111/4-240621143501.jpeg) (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view&id=111061)

I've had a complete set of Tomix items for years and both Thomas and Wenlock will remain part of the Wenlock fleet, however here's a side on comparison for those who are interested.

Now to get my hands on Percy and eagerly await the arrival of James and Toby!

Please Mr Bachmann, can we have Edward next. Pretty please!

Cheers

Ollie

Took a little while to find this topic again, figured would be better to keep it all together since the same topic, but for those interested, have spotted some new characters on the way from Bachmann Thomas from the following site:

S.C.Ruffy (though he's out now already at Tootally Thomas)

Also sorry if already announced for the new ones, did have a quick search and didn't find anything on them!

Spotted:
Gordon (https://www.trainworld.com/gifts/thomas-and-friends/bachmann-n-scale-thomas-and-friends/bachmann-58796-n-thomas-friends-gordon-the-express-engine.html) around April '23
Toad (https://www.trainworld.com/gifts/thomas-and-friends/bachmann-n-scale-thomas-and-friends/bachmann-77091-n-toad-brake-van.html) also another at Dec '23

Hoping at some point for a Edward and Henry.
