Post by: scottmitchell74 on July 15, 2019, 03:21:34 AM
Strongly wanting one...trying to comb through the internet's thoughts can be dizzying.

I have a Harris Tweed jacket, got as a gift, lucky as they  cost a fortune . 3 piece  tweed suits are
not easy to come by in the UK, don't know about the US.  I thought they were usually custom made,
but once you have one it will last a lifetime. There is an Irish tailor, will check their name.

Further to last post, Kevin and Howlin of Dublin do nice Donegal tweed stuff
and Cordings of London do a variety of tweed suits, hats, etc, but these places ain't cheap !

If you have the cash these will last a lifetime , a bit like buying a Rolex watch.........

If they last a lifetime, and I got one, I'd be getting ripped off  ;D

For what you might want a at reasonable price, you might wish to look at these people, who are beside the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway.

https://www.brooktaverner.co.uk/suit-collection/three-piece-suits.html (https://www.brooktaverner.co.uk/suit-collection/three-piece-suits.html)

These are 'everyday' suits.  If you want something much harder wearing, I suggest you try House of Bruar or Cordings.

Don't know why they used a Ducati in the photographs.  Much better with a Scott; made in Shipley!

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

John

Did a quick E-Bay search:

https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=3+piece+tweed+suit&_sacat=0 (https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=3+piece+tweed+suit&_sacat=0)

That turned up a fair few options.

Not sure I'd want to buy a suit on eBay, YMMV. I know there's a growing number of custom tailors in London who operate out of India, but come to London to run a 'surgery', size you up and then you get your order x weeks later.

I realise you're US based, but those Cordings ones Broadsword mentioned don't seem particularly expensive; < £1000 for a 3-piece.

I'd look for a tailor locally and go and speak to them. I'd personally always want to see and touch a suit fabric, even more so something like tweed.

Scott,

You will need the right shoes to go with the tweed suit - brogues ?

Same goes for the tie - a knitted one ?

Best regards,

Joe

PS we're looking forward to the photos

Thank you men! I'll continue my quest now better armed. I knew this was the place to ask such a question.

Don't forget that Harris Tweed had an unfortunate tendency to smell when it got wet. Due to the use of 'natural' fixing agents used to make the dye.

There are an awful lot of sheep in the Hebrides!

I wouldn't buy a suit without trying it on, with someone on hand to make note of any alterations required. If you are going to spend several hundreds of pounds on a good quality suit best to go to a bespoke tailor.

October - March can have cool-to-freezing weather.

Since you can get a kilt with tweed jacket in Texas ( "got kilt" in houston) you should be able to get a tweed suit.
I got my tweed jacket to wear with my kilt for a fiver,  at a charity shop,  new unused,  and as I later found out £300s worth!!!

:laughabovepost:

I've been to Texas in early March, you're quite correct it's cooling!

The wife and I saw locals in light pullovers! Pullovers I tell you. We were struggling to cope ourselves despite being in shorts and tee-shirts and dripping with perspiration!

I will say this though, you'll cut quite the dash at the ballpark.
