A legend indeed from a period when footballers were men.
I think that Tommy epitomised the English game in the 60s.

certainlydid. i have just spoken to a friend who   lives near anfield - the flags are at half mast and people are rememering him : the ironman who achieved so much and fought hard. one of Shanks' boys who stayed into Bob Paisley's era and that cracking header in 1977 i remember. He even dug deep into a pocket (his ) to help a lad home with the fare , but to fight dementia at  the end. a true legend

I knew the name 'Tommy Smith' as a football legend, without ever really knowing anything of the career that made him a legend. I've now read a little, and humbly tip my hat to the man.
