Title: Porterbrook liveried Deltic
Post by: Pete Mc on March 04, 2012, 01:54:22 AM
Hi chaps,I'm going to try and get hold of a spare Farish Deltic body, preferably one that'll fit on the later tooling Deltic chassis that isn't dcc ready.I already have two complete Deltics, these being KOYLI and The Green Howards. Now what I want is to either paint or spray a shell into Porterbrook Leasings livery but don't have any photo's or anything for reference material.
As I understand, only one was painted in the livery,or was vinyl wrapped, not sure which but I found this livery very fetching.I can't quite remember where it was now,but I did see an o gauge Deltic painted in this livery on a garden layout thread somewhere before I found this forum but I can't remember where or what the garden railway it was on.
From my memory,it was/is an o gauge Deltic in Porterbrook livery featuring sound and smoke with fans blowing the smoke to make the diesel clag look more authentic.
Your help with this would be most helpful.
Thanks in advance.
Pete

I've been trying to purchase a Deltic in Portebrook livery for ages with no luck. I think Farish made a limited edition quite a while ago but they never seem to come up for sale.

Anyone got one they would like to sell, or know where there is one for sale ?

Cheers,

Rob.

There were quite a few of these Purple Deltic bodyshells for sale a few years ago, after Bachmann took over. You may get lucky and fine someone with a spare (I've got one but I rather like it!)

This was released by Farish i think about 8/9 years ago.
It was a limited edition but it did seem to be around for quite a while at the time.

They do come up on Ebay. My girlfriend sold one last wednesday I'm afraid. It went for 59 quid, but you can get them cheaper sometimes.

It was one of the last limited editions produced at Poole, they also produced a limited edition 47 in the Porterbrook livery.
If you are going to do your own repaint then don't forget that the Deltic was fitted with Wipac light units which Farish also included on their version. These were later removed from the prototype when it was repainted but very prominant while in the porterbrook livery.

Thanks all,at the time I put up this thread,I was having problems with the browser on my phone so wasn't getting any results from a google search.
I now have been able to download some pictures of the Porterbrook Deltic along with some info on when it appeared in this livery. On top of all this I found out that Fox Transfers also do some waterslide transfers for this livery as well in n gauge/2mm scale although I'm not sure whether they are all over transfers or just the ones with the Porterbrook writing and livery flashes.
Thanks for all your info chaps, much appreciated.

did they actually hire out the loco for 'real' work on the mainline, or was this just a publicity stunt???

just been watching videos of it on youtube....

Apparently,it was put into this livery in 1999 or sometime around then and did return to mainline running, but unfortunately it had a fire. Now the info that I saw was that it suffered a fire in the power unit. This is all it said but as they were prone to having fires in the exhaust stack due to them being two stroke engines, this seems plausable. Then after this fire it was returned to Crewe where it was dumped in a siding for a while.
Now this is where the info is sketchy,if a fire.occurs in the exhaust stack, one.way of putting out the fire is to rev the engine to the maximum so the.movement of exhaust gases puts out the fire.I have seen this on a dvd of deltics in preservation, and a fire occured on one on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.Revving up the engine didn't work on this occasion so the engines were shut down and the fire was put out by firefighters. This doesn't sound like any reason to just leave a loco with damage to its exhaust as being a reason to just dump it at Crewe, the only other explanation is that it may have had a generater flash over which can cause considerably more damage.
Thing is though,it may not have been too badly damaged as it was bought by.the company that owns Royal Scots Grey to be used as an engine parts donor loco so was returned to normal running at some point and repainted green, and worked on preserved railways for a while.Gordon Highlander was the loco in question.
I'll have to watch the dvd to confirm some of this but I'll do it this week.Interestingly,on the same dvd, theres no mention to my knowledge of it being in Porterbrook livery but again,I shall have a look to see.

I've always considered the Deltic an awesome machine after I had a walk through one (cab to cab) at Kings Cross all those years ago, but I am probably the only one who thinks this livery is horrible. :(
It looks like Laurence Llewellyn Bowen has given it a 'makeover'

(That's thrown the brown sticky stuff into the rotating thingy)

Although I like quirky liveries, this one doesn't appeal to me....
That said, there are many who do, so all I would say is that variety is the spice of life

Hi Rob,it is my intension to just keep an eye on this ebay listing, not bid on it.So rest assured, its all yours if you want it.
My intension is to buy a shell and paint it in this livery just to see if I'm capable of such a thing, kind of as a start to broaden my modelling skills.I may even have a crack at the police liveried class 37 if its a success.
I won't deprive a fellow Yorkshireman of his prize.

Hi Pete, nice to know that's one less bidder trying to deprive me of my dream, lol.

IF i should be so lucky as to be the highest bidder would it be of any help if I offered to take photos of it for you ?

Hope this doesn't make you change your mind and start bidding but although I live in West Yorkshire I'm actually an exiled Geordie - lived down here for 13 years and the locals still call me an incumbent !!

Cheers,

Rob.

Photo's would be absolutely bang on pal.
I promise I won't bid against you on this cos I don't do paypal or owt like that.
My granddad was a geordie, came down here to work down the pit.Its not as if they didn't have any up in Newcastle. He came from the Winlaton or Washington area, not sure which or if they're close to each other for that matter, but he came down here when he was about 16 or 17 and worked down Bentley pit all his working life.
Thing is though, even though he was a geordie,he didn't have the accent. As I was his first grandson, born in 1969 he would have been 57 when I was born so as he was here around 40 years before then I guess it would of been lost due to working with all us rough, abrasive yorkshiremen.
He did have a tendency to say fost instead of first but this combined with the thee's and tha's made these words melt into each other.
I did work in a band that played pubs and clubs in the north east and never had a problem understanding the accent where some do,so.even though I'm 100% yorkshireman, there may be the tiniest bit of geordieishness buried deep down within.
Who knows?

Well,I've kept an eye on the Farish Porterbrook Deltic Gordon Highlander on ebay since StufromEGDL pointed it out.
Not sure whether this should be in one of the ebay madness type threads, but as its appropriate to this thread I thought I'd let everyone know the result of the auction
Auction finished at 9pm today and the final bid was £67 plus postage(£3.50).
I bought Green Howards new for £61 and KOYLI for £50,both new and bought at exhibitions.

I had her on a Chingfinder sorry Pathfinder tour 28-12-2002 Over the S&C. NST-Preston via Stoke, Man Pic & Bolton then ran round at Preston to take the S&C to Carlisle. The return was a mega fast run Carlisle - Preston then Bolton, Man Pic, Stoke, Stafford and finally Birmingham.

I have this model in my box...but fitted with the later Farish chassis as the Poole 1 was not a very good runner

Cheers, Anthony

Virgin only ever used D9000...They wanted to use 16 but after the fire (when released from Brush) they soon said no!! I remember in 1999 when 50050 was also quoted for the summer Saturdays Liverpool - Weymouth (From NST - Weymouth & Return) That didnt happen either :'(
