I just thought that I should let you all know that I'm now an esteemed member of the N Gauge Society. I've already ordered some kits (they look great!) and at the end of the month I'll be ordering a snow plough, ready for winter, and two Queen Mary Brakes. Exciting times.  :NGAUGE: I joined online, which was handy. The handbook and journal look really good, although I've only had a flick through so far. I just to peruse the pictures as a child, my dad was a member, and it's come a long way since then. I just wish that more of the shop was online, with better pics etc. although that'll be coming in the future.  :)

Read your post with interest, Richard. Joining the N  Gauge Society is something I've been meaning to do for years, and reading your post has encouraged me to get off my backside and do it, particularily when you say it can be done online. Cheers!

Glad you finally went for it I was a help for that. Yes, nice and easy online payment etc. Bumpf came through quickly too, although probably take a touch longer to the Wollongong. Enjoy it, I am.

I finished my first two kits today without too much trouble - Lowmac Loriot Ks. Just need to paint them and find a couple of tractors to go on top.  ;D

Cool.... they will look good with a couple of tractors on the top. Sort of reminds me of the Airfix OO kit I put together as a kid a long time ago in a galaxy far far away!

Good decision to join the NGS! :beers:

Many of the modellers on this forum are members and can tell you just how good the membership benefits are

Hi Richard,

Glad to hear you've joined the NGS. There's always somehting of interest in each Journal, regardless of what outline/period it is.

Now get your kits finished and enter the compition in May.

 Thanks.  :) Still need to have a thorough read through the handbook and journal but what I've seen looks good.

What's this competition in May?  :beers:

Hi Richard,

It's the Annual Model Making Competition, (AMMC). Details in this issue of the Journal page 7. Also details on the NGS website. You can enter various classes from steam, diesel engines to rolling stock, vehicles, lineside equipment etc.

If you can't get to the AGM, where the comp is held, you can post in your entries. Each issue of the Journal has details of the previous years entries. Well worth a try.

Hi Alex, thanks but I think my attempts would be somewhat simplistic compared to the competition but something to think about for the future. :)

Check out the on-line list (on their website) - it includes a scoring of the construction difficulty for each kit, so you can make your own choice.

I think if you check the rules that you'll find that an individual can't win the same category on consecutive years. That gives others a chance in those categories and the original winner goes on to a different ('past winners' or something like that) category to give them an opportunity (as well as being able to enter all the other categories they didn't win in).

So, yep, there is a point and a chance of winning something.

Tim here is the link that H was talking about: http://www.ngaugesociety.com/index.php?page=ngs-wagon-descriptions (http://www.ngaugesociety.com/index.php?page=ngs-wagon-descriptions). Navigation isn't the easiest on their site so thought I'd save you the bother. The lowmac was easy enough to build but I'm sure they'll have something later that would be easy for you.

Hi 7714  I agree, numbers are the way forward.  ;)

Lawrence, has H won lots of awards in the past then? Maybe I should get him to show me the ropes so I have some chance in the future?

I don't know Richard you would have to check with him; I was referring to our very own Alex Crawford who produces some fantastic scratchbuilds and kit bashes for which he has picked up a number of awards and was intended as a gentle bit of leg pulling for Alex, hence the inclusion of the smilies.

You can enter the same category 2 years running, or more even, but not the year after you've won in that category.
If you look through the last few years you'll see the same names cropping up but in different categories.
I'm not knocking those winners, excellent modellers they are, I'm just pointing out that they partake regularly and rotate the categories their entries are in. Hope that makes sense. I need a lie down now, my brain hurts!  :smiley-laughing:

Hi Lawrence

I don't consider myself any great modeller. I just have a go. Most of what you see are 3rd or 4th attempts. I entered the competitions, not to win as I didn't think my stuff was good enough, but to show the wider audience what can be achieved in N Gauge, and what we as modeller out into our layouts. All entries are shown in the Journal throughout the following year, not just the winners.

As for this year I can't enter the vehicles or rolling stock sections for the next two year. I can, as H stated, enter other sections I didn't win. I can also enter the previous winners section with either 1 vehicle or 1 piece of rolling stock. So if I enter a truck this year I can only enter a piece of rolling stock next year.

I will have some entries this year but only if what I have built/scratchbuilt meets any of the sections criteria. I don't build specifically for any section. To me that then moves away from layout modelling to competition modelling.

If my models give someone an idea for their own layout then that's good enough for me. Isn't that what its all about?

Yesterday I bought an N Gauge EWS livery brake van at the Worcester model railway show. It cost me £40!!

£20 for the van, and £20 to join the NGS  :smiley-laughing: And I saw a new EWS livery maintenance coach being made? So I'll be putting my name down to that as well.  ;D

I've rejoined the NGS for about the third time. I've let my membership lapse a few times because of the cost. It's quite expensive for overseas members.

This time I've been tempted back by the Queen Mary Brakevan and the journal,  which I believe has improved considerably. Being able to join online has made things easier and I'm really looking forward to receiving my membership package.

Regards

Veronica.

The journal is well worth the price of admission in its own right, in my view.  Not sure how steep overseas rates are, whether I'd have the same opinion.

Its a total must for any n gauge modeler, be it beginner or otherwise.
The journal has definitely improved over the years and is now of a good consistent standard.

Its worth a bash at the Annual model making competition, particularly if you are going to the AGM.

Entered in 99,2000 and 2011 and won something every time so been chuffed (no pun intended) to bits, although some stuff i have put in thinking that it would stand a good chance of doing something has done nothing!

What i do like is that the judges still identify that whilst some entries may not be absolutely A1, the effort that goes into producing something different that is not just another respray etc is worthwhile.

don't get me wrong, there is some cracking stuff out there but a category for almost anyone to have a go be it a full train to an N gauge road vehicle.

The great thing for me is seeing how creative people can be at all skill level's.

The down side is seeing your work in a lovely big picture and noticing the bloody glazing has moved on your masterpiece  :smiley-laughing:

Don't forget the three year membership deal as well. Works out cheaper and you don't have to remember to renew every year (just every three!).
