hi everyone
this is a 2 part question...
part 1 - this is one for the wagon aficionados help with please!
i have ordered 2x second hand dapol 21 ton hoppers. i want to add TOPS panels and new numbers. I've bought some decals (railtec ones). should i add HTO or HTV panels? the dapol wagons i ordered have more ribs than on the re-bodied wagons, presumably original bodies, so would HTO panels be more likely?
part 2 - how do you remove the panels and printed on number from the dapol wagons?
i've never renumbered anything before, and only used water slide decals a few times before, so this is going to be a first for me...
cheers
tim
:NGF:
looks like the Dapol one is five ribs so early body would seem to be right. From what I can see, though, both HTO and HTV could have had original bodies ?
As for the "how to", then T-Cut with a cotton bud and a lot of patience should do the job.....
Perhaps this link will help ? https://www.ltsv.com/w_profile_021.php (https://www.ltsv.com/w_profile_021.php)
thanks koyli nice one
I've not seen any pictures online of any htv wagons with original body so I'm thinking I'll just add hto panels
I did consider filing some joints down to create the new body style but that seems like it might be annoying to do.
ok great I'll get some t cut and try it cheers
Tim
Hi
As far as I am aware the Dapol wagons don't have vacuum cylinders so they would be HTOs
Cheers
Paul
ah ok that makes the choice easy then!
cheers paul
Tim
added decals now and they look ok for a first effort at this
I've just ordered overhead flash decals to add on the ends too then i can weather then and matt varnish
Tim
I did a rake of these HTO 21T hoppers a while ago for my layout. Used Railtec decals, on some wagons I cut away the body ribs, these I had to do resprays on then weathered them all.

I find this site is great for reference photos of various wagons if it's any help.

:thankyousign:
The red lorry is a Base Toys Coal merchants lorry, weathered down a bit by me.

cheers i might buy one of those lorries!
i finished the 2 hoppers. added the tops panel decals and electrification flashes on the ends, then they were dusted with weathering powder and matt varnished.
the railtec decals i like and were easy to use.
the weathering is not very good and needs rust adding and probably some airbrushing of dirt on the underframes at least.
i also want to add better coal loads using real coal. need to read up on how you do that.
anyway here are a few pictures i took (my phone camera is not the best at the macro images / artificial lighting combination...)

Looking good! Those plastic coal loads should come out although they can be a tight fit in there. You can take them out, coat them with PVA wood glue & sprinkle fine real coal on them. Once dry, clean off any excess around the edge & seal them with some Johnsons Clear Floor polish or a clear varnish & re-fit them. That's what I did with my HTO's & they are still removable should you want to take them out. It's much easier than making false bases from scratch like you have to do with the 16T minerals.
Cheers, Stu
I just paint over the top of the plastic coal loads then sprinkle a mixture of "coal" and real coke over the top, making sure that it gets well and truly knocked/brushed to remove any that hasn't stuck well enough before the wagon goes anywhere near a layout. Real coke dust conducts electrickery, so spillage can short the lot out.....
For empties the plastic load prises out. It was only the first run of Dapol 21-tonners that had the load glued in. George Smith didn't see the point of doing empties but I appealed to the accountant in him by pointing out he could save about 0.02p per wagon in production costs if he didn't glue the loads in. After that the loads weren't glued...

Some of the hoppers on Hawthorn Dene, not as thoroughly done as Stu's but I do have a lot of them - I stopped counting after sixty.....
Don't look too closely at the numbers, a lot of them claim to be 20 ton minerals.
