Title: Pet's Corner
Post by: Adam1701D on February 28, 2012, 08:39:57 PM
After seeing Chris' picture of Barney, I thought I'd share a couple of shots of my less-cute dogs...

Here's Grappa, our five year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Like most Staffies, he's a complete softie, despite his appearance.

Grappa's partner in crime is Joey, a 12-year old ex-racing greyhound. Another soft dog, who will stop at nothing to get a bit of fuss, including trotting along next to passing folk, nudging them in the bum to get noticed!

Nice idea Adam.  Lovely dogs you have there.  They sound like a handful.  I bet one dog is more work than 11 cats and a snake, though.

I don't think I have shared pics of our babies before...  Rather fitting that this should be my 1000th post!

Cat Cat is our British import:

Ellie and Jesse are sister and brother. He is the proverbial scaredy cat.

Muppet - he comes when you call him and plays fetch.  Closest we have to a dog.

Lucy in a sweet moment.  She bullies the others and is currently on Prozac to chill her out!

Scooter is Lucy's brother.  He has three legs.  He lost one back leg when he was run over as a stray kitten.  Three legs is still better than two, he reckons.  He power slides on our hardwood floor... he gets some speed up, flops over on his smooth side and steers with his one back leg.  Sadly I don't have video of it.

Ollie is mostly blind in one eye.  But he misses nothing. If someone is getting a love or food he will be there too.

Pavi and Lulu are brother and sister.  She got into our air con system ducts the other day.  She is an intrepid and relentless adventurer.  She was hand reared and knows no fear.  We haven't had the bill for the repairs to the duct work.

Cocoa is a recent addition, and she is gradually getting used to people.  Still doesn't like being touched though.

Spacky is Cocoa's brother.  You couldn't get more different.  He is a love monster.

And last but not least, Murray.  My six year old Royal Python.  He's bigger than this now, about 4 ft long.  He was all sorts of red tape and hassle to export to the US.  He must be the least maintenance pet ever, but you don't get so much love back.

Crikey mark! I bet the only reason you work is just to support this feline tribe!

Great looking cats though, I can see why you have them all. The snake looks pretty cool too

Lovely cats there, Mark. We had a couple but they recently passed away (the oldest lived to a ripe old 19 years!).

With Grappa's rather exuberant nature, we'll hold off getting any more cats for a few years. My nickname for him is "Q1" - he's ugly, black, an odd shape, snorts like a good'un and is incredibly strong and surprisingly fast!

There are states over here that limit people to a small number of pets.  But not here fortunately, as they are all rescues and needed a home.

They have programmes on TV about nutty pet hoarders and we are just waiting for the camera crew to show up.

Great pics, guys.

Currently we have one guinea pig, one syrian hamster and one dwarf hamster, all indoor cages.  The guinea pig was from a breeder friend of my wife, but the hamsters are both from rescues.

It's a lot quieter than we've had in the past - busiest ever at one time was two rabbits (who eventually became house rabbits, with all the chaos that causes!), three guinea pigs, two spiney mice and three mice.

Is a syrian hamster anything like a siberian hamster?  ;)

Three cats here - George, Fossa and Lily.  A brother and sister pair that we got a few years ago now and they couldn't be more dissimilar! George is aloof and Fossa is a complete softie (if as clumsy as they come!). They are both pretty big cats and really clever - Fossa's party trick is opening the fridge or food cupboard to feed herself.

Both have got into some scrapes - Fossa broke her hip as a kitten jumping off a shed roof and George did a runner and lived wild on the mean streets of Tottenham for about 2 months (we thought we had lost him for good).

In the meantime we were offered Lily (real name Delilah!) who was the runt of the litter and still pretty much large kitten sized even though she is about 6.  We took her in as a playmate for Fossa, then George was found and we ended up with 3.

Sadly the ex-Mrs Red Death has custody of the little devils!

Nah, furry animals don't do it for me! We have Delboy the blue fronted Amazon parrot ( him in my avatar ) highly intelligent, very vocal, and extremely clever. Likes to eat weetabix off his own spoon, barks like a dog, hoots like an owl, and does very convincing phone ringing sounds, also has a habit of repeating a phone conversation he has heard word for word, often some weeks later. He has never been locked in a cage, and has free flight of the house (except my railway room, where he trashed the sleepers on 15 yards of flexi track that was waiting to be laid, and completely destroyed my old Farish HST set, in about 10 minutes when I went to answer the phone!) That said, I couldn't be without him, a dog will fetch your slippers, a cat will curl up in your lap, but even if I finish work at 3am there's always a "Hello, have you had a good day?"

My dogs don't fetch slippers. Grappa eats them  :(

Ooh, that's expensive! I had a dog many years ago, but I can't face clearing up after them anymore, plus the irregular hours I work as a coach driver wouldn't be fair on one, so I'll stick with the parrot, after all, he's only 21, and they live up to 80 or so years, so we'll have to leave him to our daughter!

Current tally - two cats, two chinchillas, one Roborovski Hamster and a fish that seems destined to live forever!  :smiley-laughing:

First up is Molly the Maine Coon cat, she's 17 years old now and going a bit deaf, still keeps Tigger in line though ;)

Here's Tigger, he's 8 years old and a complete sap  ::) You may have seen him inspecting my trackwork on another thread  :smiley-laughing: Doing what he does best here - lounging on a warm lap!

These two little terrors are Austin & Morris, our three-and-a-half year old Chinchillas. They are so called because I'm a massive Mini fan (the original, not the BMW "pretender"), and the first two Minis ever produced were a grey Austin Mini Seven and a beige Morris Mini Minor  :)

This is Henry (Ford  ;D ), the Roborovski Hamster. He's less than a year old and too small to get a decent photo of! He's an adrenalin junkie, running in his saucer-wheel really fast then clinging to the centre bit and going round and round - unless he gets thrown out across the cage first! He's nuts  :smiley-laughing:

Finally we have Dan the Sarasa Comet - the last of three fish we had. He's six and still going strong.

I don't know whether to be annoyed at the teasing, or laughing at the cat's repeated assaults on the printer !!!  But that curiosity / attitude is right for those cats, our late Pixel was similarly , and coloured just the same  :smiley-laughing:

The first printer we got was a Citizen dot-matrix - noisy bugger ... she loved watching the print-head moving across, same with the paper ...  we used to find her sitting on it waiting for it to move !  And she'd still sit on it, trying to catch the head under the transparent cover, when in use ...  ::)

Sadly missed  :'(

Sadly we lost 2 of our dogs to illness last month so we are left with our 8 year old Cairn Terrier Charlie.
So off we go to the local rescue centre to get a  SMALL, FEMALE, YOUNG dog for a companion.

Somehow we came home with SUGHERO, 35.5KG , MALE, 9(ish) with only one working eye ????

It's nice to know that quite a few railway modellers are also pet keepers. We have just finished our barbecue tea during which we receiving advice about our remaining pooch with a proposal that her skin cancer is now at a stage that we should be considering putting her at rest.

Easy to say I suppose but definitely a difficult decision. I had to leave the rest of them talking on the basis that trains were less painful !

Difficult days, maybe difficult weeks.

I wonder why we get so attached.

When a decision like this has to be made it is often clouded by our own feelings when we should be considering the feelings of our pets.  If they are in pain and nothing can be done then in the best interests of the animal has to come first.

I am not a believer in anything but my collie passed away in the car en route to to the vets on her final journey.

Doesn't like walkies how I wish!
The new BEAST (sughero) woke this morning at 5:50 with a howl like a banshee!  Had no idea at first what it was but went downstairs to investigate. Neighbours thought it highly amusing to see the mad Inglese out in the Piazza in his dressing gown "walking the hound" for his first pee break...

Barry is ± 1year old(or young) and I already found that nothing that flies, lives long where he is for the moment that translates as insects guess I need to keep him in the house until all little birds are fully fledged.....  :worried:
Hope he is as good a mouser; also hope 1.10mtr. is high enough to keep the trains safe.
It looks like waiting with the cat, until most wiring was done, has tuned out to be a good idea...  :)

We have had several rescue dogs over the past 25 years, all have been characters with stories to tell, not many railway related.  The first was this hulking great wimp of a German Shepherd who used to chase lights.  Car lights on the bedroom ceiling could lead to agony!  :worried:       :'(

At the time I had my Z gauge 'coffee table' layout and in typical Marklin style several locos had lights.  Cleo would chase the trains round the layout trying to bite the lights!

Still miss her.  Current daft collie is sure she is Queen of the roost.

Okay, I guess I'd better add some of the critters that let me share their home. :)

When I had my heart attack eight years ago it was decided that we should have a dog to make sure I got some exercise. Luckily the dog is lazier than I am. :smiley-laughing: This is Marshall, a combination of Labrador, Alsation, Akita and Staffie. He's a stupid as a sack full of monkeys but he's a great dog.

A few years ago we adopted a Border Collie while we were on holiday. An affectionate little thing that's had a pretty hard life but she's very happy now. This is Honey.

The dynamic duo

We have a Cockatiel with a really bad attitude and three tanks full of tropical fish.

This, of course, isn't enough for my Daughter.

Tibbles the rabbit.

She has had a wide variety of small rodents. So here's the cute section.

At the present moment my daughter has three hamsters, three mice and two Gerbils that she inherited from my Mum. My wife has four mice and the most recent addition is a pair of Guinea Pigs (no pictures of them yet, they're still too scared.)

My daughter - fortunately moved out with her husband and kids many years ago - seriously she's a great girl - as well as her five dogs, used to have a snake, now just has 3 bearded dragons.  If I can get a picture from her, I'll post it.

Hi all,

Thought I'd post as although we have 2 border collies called Sophie (she's lovely and calm) and Guinness (nicknames Guinea Pig, Ginster or NO!) we are getting a Romanian rescue dog on December 5th when the fence is fixed.

We forgot to take a camera so SWMBO asked the Rescue Center for a photo and they kindly did a video and put it on youtube.

He's called Lewis although SWMBO wants to call him William. Not too sure  :-\

Anyway, hope this works

Here are our three(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/12/thumb_32093.jpeg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=32093) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/12/thumb_32094.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=32094)

Rosie [yellow] is the matriarch - coming up to 11 years old she a bit arthritic but still manages a walk round the village green.

Ella [chocolate] is six but in common with most chocolate labs she has a few brain cells missing and has slightly less sense than a puppy.

Oscar  is already well known on the forum as a wrecker of churches - see my topic "Tintern: St Michael's Church"

New addition to the household.
Poppy (adopted on 11th November) from the animal shelter at Lucca. About 1year old and nuts!  Still she has turned our 11 year old cairn into a puppy.

We have reserved another dog but the Italian law means the poor chap has to be kept for 90 days "in case his owner returns"..
